Summoner from the Dark Side

As we are fast approaching the end of 2024, I'd like to highlight another Rebellion card that I think would do well in the new modern landscape. Risqruel Drath is a legendary summoner designed in part by the content creator, Bulldog1205. The name is an anagram of Darth Squirrel which is a reference to the antagonists of the Star Wars franchise.

This must be the reason why his artwork is seen holding a flame blade which has a similarity to a red lightsaber. He is also wearing a brown hood resembling those of Jedis. And he shoots lightning on his right fingertips which is an ability used by the dark side.

Risqruel is a dual-splinter summoner commanding both fire and earth elements. The passive abilities he gives to all units are +1 range attack and flying. But I believe this summoner's strength lies on the tactic abilities. The new ability, Impede, intrigues me the most as I have yet to see its full potential. Lowering the enemy monsters' speed can doom them especially since Risqruel bestows flying which improves the chance of evasion.

The second set of tactics is also very interesting as gives you a chance to focus the enemy attacks on a single unit and have it deal one damage when it dies. An ideal monster for this would be a strong defensive type. And I don't know if they would reintroduce the Martyr ability in the next modern set but it would be an ideal target for this tactic. Another interesting unit would be the Runis. It has been recently been voted upon that they would be evergreen cards meaning they would not rotate out of modern. Giving Runis this ability would mean redemption would activate twice in a game, which might give a significant advantage.

There are also many range monsters to choose from when you select Risqruel Drath as summoner. But the two that I think synergizes well with him would be Quilliun Legionary and Kha'Zi Conjurer. Quilliun Legionary is kind of a semi-tank and can also be placed in the second position. Giving him flying and true strike can compensate the fact that he is very slow. I'm also thinking that Kha'Zi Conjurer would be a good monster to bestow taunt since he has good hit points while having a low mana cost.

I think Risqruel is currently undervalued at $14. It's just most players are still focused on the upcoming Survival mode and haven't realized how scarce the upcoming modern card supply really is. This summoner from the dark side would surely shine in 2025.
