Now that we have had one full season with the new ranked reward system under our belt, we have been going through lots of data and player feedback and are starting to design and implement some changes to the system.
The first two changes (detailed below) are planned to go live during the next maintenance window on Tuesday, June 28th:
Daily Focus Chests Based on Current League
We will be changing the daily focuses to award chests based on the player's league at the time that the focus begins rather than the highest league achieved during the previous season.
For example, if a player is currently in Silver league when they start their daily focus, then they will earn Silver chests from that focus even if they had reached Gold league in the previous season. Please note that this will only apply to daily focuses. Season reward chests will still be based on the highest league achieved in the previous season.
Starter Card RShares Reduction Formula Change
Currently, the starter card reduction is applied to the overall Rshares earned. For example, a player with a rating of 1,000 and using 1 starter card out of 4 would earn 750 Rshares as shown below:
= 750
However, this linear reduction does not incentivize card ownership or renting as much as was intended. After some discussions, it was determined that it would be far more effective to apply the starter card reduction to a player's rating in the equation. With this change, the same example above will now result in approximately 421 Rshares instead of the previous 750:
= 421.875
Future Changes
There are a number of other changes we are also considering and working on implementing but that will not be ready until a little later on. We still wanted to give the community a heads-up about these changes so everyone can be aware of what is planned and provide additional opportunities for player feedback.
New Daily Focuses
We are working on implementing new daily focuses based on using cards with certain abilities, rather than just cards from a certain element. The plan is to add around 10 to 15 of these types of focuses, with each one focusing on a few different abilities with a common theme. One example would be a focus based on playing at least one card that has either the Sneak, Snipe, or Opportunity ability.
The plan is for these new focuses to be added alongside of the existing element-based focuses, so it will be possible to get either type of focus each day. We look forward to these new types of focuses adding much more variety to the teams that are fielded in ranked battles.
Daily Focus Mechanic Update
We are also considering changing the daily focus mechanic such that instead of an "all-or-nothing" system like it is currently, each win will always contribute rshares toward the daily focus chests even if no daily focus cards are used, however, each card used that follows the daily focus gives some type of bonus to the amount of focus points earned for that battle.
For example, if a player has a Life element focus, then they will still earn focus points based on the rshares earned from a battle win even if they use a different element, but if they choose the Life element and use Life cards in the battle, then they will receive bonus focus points above the amount of rshares earned for each Life card they used.
Season Rentals
While not directly related to the ranked reward system, the rental market is a key component in the overall economy and the increase in rewards has provided a lot of additional value to renting cards. One of the reasons we believe that this has not been reflected in rental market usage and pricing as much as we had hoped is that it is quite difficult to manage and get stable, predictable pricing for large rental collections with the current daily rental system.
As a result, we are working on implementing a season rental option. With season rentals, card owners would be able to specify whether or not they would like their cards to be available for full season rental. Then renters would be able to rent those cards for the entire current ranked play season. This means that the rental cannot be canceled by either party until the current ranked play season is over - or rather the cancellation can be submitted at any time, but it will not take effect until the current season ends.
We are planning to still price the rental by number of days, it's really just a change to when and how the rentals will end or be canceled. This way if you start a season rental at the beginning of the season, you will pay for ~15 days worth of the rental, but if you start a season rental with only 3 days left of the season then you will only pay for 3 days worth.
We hope that this new feature will help more players take advantage of the opportunities to earn via card rentals since it will provide more predictable pricing and less management and oversight in dealing with daily cancellations.

Personally, I'm more keen to know my customers have peace of mind, than I am to try and constantly maximise by adjusting pricing.

Very interesting changes. Looking forward to them. I'm very curious how some of these changes will workout for bot accounts who are still trying to navigate the rental market. Like getting focus points for any win with owned or rented cards and season rentals. Seems like it might bring a lot more of them back into the mix.
I don't think this is accurate to say. The entire rental market has changed its complexion. Not a single cards is valued even close to what it was before the change. Some cards have been cut to nothing and others have gone up 100x. Factoring in that we lost end of season ramps, DEC got cut in half, and we lost 2/3s of the daily active users, the fact that the rental market is riding about 20% lower than it used to is pretty impressive. I know I'm making way more DEC today than I was then. Its not worth anything anymore but I'm making lots more of it !LOL
Unrelated but with CP taking a dive recently and the new rewards cards riding just above burn value, I think I'd be reconsidering halving the CP requirement for Modern format.

The collection power indeed is ridiculously cheap right now, i's basically Supply > Demand
I'm quite sure they will fix it somehow and now most likely is a good time to pick it up cheaply assuming there is a lot of user growth left.
I'm totally on the fence on the CP cards right now. I was thinking they'd come back for sure and I'd even started buying up some. But now I'm noticing some things that give me pause. Like we seem to have a summoner shortage. It's not critical yet but I think if we added 20k more bot accounts needing to rent summoners it could really start showing up as a bottleneck before we ever start to strain CP. It's hard to say but I've begun thinking about the possibility that burning CP rewards cards could easily be in our future.
It's really so hard to say what happens next. I feel good about it overall though.

I like the changes overall, especially the season renting. No more browsing the market all day long trying to get the best price.
BUT still no mention about shortening the focus timer to 23hours - I would really like to see that one, and I bet a lot of other people would too.

Also please reconsider the 24-hour reset clock to at least 23-Hour & 50 Minutes or allow it to trigger automatically. It's extremely annoying right now as it's hard to have a fixed routine seeing the reset time slide a bit each day as it takes time to claim rewards and get another focus.
Something else that could be done is generally make it harder to get reward points and give bonuses to players that have a bigger & balanced collection or those that hold a lot of Splinterlands Assets similar to how the Airdrop points work. The time required to play has gone exponential since the game got more competitive/fun combined with the fact that you now basically have to play 30 matches daily to get most of the rewards. It's a change that would encourage players to collect more cards and hold assets while rewarding whales who have money but not always the time allowing them to quicker get the chests earning their rewards.
Regardless, I've been enjoying the game a lot more since the changes and these new changes for sure will add to this. Keep up the great Stuff!
Yeah I've been annoyed at the timer too lol it keeps pushing it further forward being 24 hours. I rather liked the old way where it was 23 hours, made it easier to keep it consistent at a time of day!
100% agreed, the lack of leeway forces me to slowly keep adjusting my play time and it slowly gets out of sync with the day/life
The change for the focus chest is welcome, the old system was just making it risky to jump league and people would stay lower on purpose to not be stuck with a lot of points to get chests at the beginning of the season. That was counter productive and it's good it has been changed.
Hopefully these new changes will help balance things out a little better. I have only played 1 day so far this season do to being frustrated with the new rewards system. The new system is supposed to be better but I finished off last season in gold 3, when I started this season I started in silver 3. Starting in bronze 1 the previous season I needed 5k points to get 1 chest, starting off this season in silver 3 I need 18k points to get 1 chest. Only receiving 2k - 3k points per win it took me 8 battle wins to get 1 chest, this is the opposite of better in my oppinion.
I don't mind working for rewards but I think starting off a season needing 8 wins for just 1 chest is to much and doesn't make me want to play more, in fact it makes me not want to play at all. The alternative in my view would be to not play this season and fall down to bronze 3 where I would need a very low amount of FP per chests and grind it out to end off in gold 3 and get like 100 chests at the end of the season. It seems the best strategy would be to take every other season off to maximize the rewards.
I do realize this is all still new and there will be some adjusting to balance things out to a fair but fun system for everyone and look forward to seeing how things work out.
I guess that's anyway the case in the majority of the games, so I wouldn't really need to focus on that focus. :)
That means it's even more profitable to just focus on playing as successful as possible, even if neglecting the current focus.
I wonder why the bonus points (also for example for gold foil or alpha cards) are calculated according to the absolute number of cards and not the percentage of these types of cards in the team?
If I use for instance a gold foild "Scarred Llama Mage" plus a gold foil "Kron the Undying", and that's my whole team, then that means 100 % of my used cards are gold foil cards. If my opponent uses altogether 7 cards (1 summoner + 6 monsters) where 3 of these cards are gold foil cards they have a potentially higher gold foild bonus, even if less than 50 % of their team are gold foil cards.
So just use smaller cards and not the giants and you will earn more golddfoil-bonus if you win the battle.

This full season rental option is phenomenal and very forward-looking. Great job The Splinterlands team for doing such a great job early on in this new format and seeing what is working and what needs re-worked.

that sounds bad, for example camouflage how many cards do you have in modern on bronze, silver lvl that can do that? 2 pieces that are turned off when magic is banned?
yes that is a good point - not all of the new ability-based focuses will be available at the lower leagues. We did an analysis of how many cards had the abilities associated with each new focus in each league and only those abilities that are widely available in the league will be included in the focuses for that league.

I guess this ruleset (and some more) won't than apply often in the future.
My first thought was about stun. Last year when Llama-kron became very popular in bronze becasue it was unbeatable, the answer given to new players by higher level players was "llama kron isn't even that good, just use an early stun". There was only one stun card in the whole game in bronze level and it wasn't early enough.
The play testers (mavericks) and the dev team do sometimes forget about the bronze experience.
It affect not only bronze league, also rulesets like "Monster loose all abilities" won't be possible if one of the players has a sneak, snipe, oppurtunity, stun ... quest.
so, as a renter, we have to spend DEC to rent or whatever and get the power of our desired chest before opening the focus. I think you just said to the players that come back to go away again.

some players (like me), prefer to skip some focus. I used to rent ONLY after deciding to play the day focus. After the update I will need to rent before creating the focus, and maybe get some bad focus element.

yeah this is the tricky part here.. rental prices for reward cards will probably go back to levels before the update (which is good) but a lot of players will probably stop playing again due to the need to rent for cp prior to claiming daily chests.

It means you're playing in Silver, then you will receive the Silver chest reward with your Daily focus instead of Gold chest if you reached the Gold league in the last season.
The rest still remains the same. You still see what is your daily focus before renting the cards.

Good stuff, little less need for tactical planning but makes it simpler overall. Always good to incentivize card own/rent and the seasonal renting should make that easier too.

I really like this and I think what a lot of people who are already crying are forgetting is that if you do happen to come across the correct cards for the daily focus or ability you will gain a bonus % per win above the normal amount of rshares normally given. At least that's how I understood the article reference.

This means that not matter the daily ability or focus as long as we win we get credit towards our daily chests which I think is brilliant and then to top it off that bonus % added on top of getting the correct daily element is that much better so it will help us catch up faster.
I understand the goal is to incentivize ownership and rentals, however it seems that if you don't have a random card available, you are now being heavily penalized for having an incomplete set.
The example they give, missing 1 out of 4, has gone from a 25% penalty to a ~58% penalty.
I suspect rather than increase the usage, anyone who is borderline profitable currently will be chased away since this will reduce the rewards that they earn as their choices will be to acquire cards they rarely use, or to risk losing a significant amount of rewards.

I cannot earn focus points in this rulesets cause I cannot use cards with Sneak, Snipe, or Opportunity or this ruleset won't be possible if one of the player has one of this daily focus ?
season rentals will be the bomb actually! uper happy with this as it will give way more stable rental prices
(and also happy with the rewards going in the active season in points versus the highest one. This season hasnt been very inspiring to me while the last one was awesome!)
I have some issues with card rental from the market, the new system will be ensure about the renter that keep obtaining the card till the end of season, but if i want it for my daily focus and while i am able to play the game two or three hours in a day, then why should i pay for the entire season's of rent for the card unless i have selected that card for the entire season! If possible then make option for both parties- like one condition for all renter- cancellation should be done after the selected days expires from both parties, once you have done with selected of days cannot be cancelled, just like one or two or anymore days. In a way, that i have rent a card for five days then cancelling should be done after five days, i think this condition will help for all user, as new reward system boost all rent price of card and very hard to manage all fabulous starter cards are gone jump at high price too. And paying for them entire season with full amount is burden too for other cards rent, as most of the players are run out with their resources or DEC too. Rent should be daily basis and cancellation made after the contract expire. The owner of card may leave a choice for renter that how many maximum days it let be rent at once! I think both are in summarised for better solution, low price of card rent for entire season is looking very good but those are in high rent price is very bad impact on other card renting system, most of the users are try to rent for last four or three days to avoid rent price for entire season.

The focus chests being in current league instead of last seasons high league should help a lot, but for accounts that play most of the season in one league and cross into the next one near the EOS it seems it may still be better to not let them promote.
The season long rental option seems interesting but I think it will depend on what the folks who rent out cards and the ones who rent them do how it will affect the market. I am not sure if it will behave as expected or not.

Now you need to be in a big-league to start a daily focus.
So for me that im at diamond but i have only 10k power, i need to rent a lot before even i start the daily focus. So i need to pay even before i pay my daily rents.
And the only lucky is to get the same splinter as i already rent by luck.
THIS IS FOCKED UP. I m paying you enough to be at least at the league i played before a day.

They should end the focus, because the cards possessed that are not part of the daily focus are practically unusable, even more so when the airdrops are over. It would take the focus off and leave the win ranking, so all the cards would have their general utility and not just limited to the daily focus.
