Splinterlands Strategies: Unsurveyed Land, the Gamble

in Splinterlands2 months ago

It’s not often I write about Splinterlands, and if I am honest with you I have thought about completely selling out and taking a massive hit.

Have things hit rock bottom? I still don’t know but once I removed the 'loss' idea out of my head, I started doing my usual trick which is going against the grain.

image.png
...'Alphas; there's not many low BCX ones on sale, 'cause I have been buying 'em!'...

Alphas, Betas, they are cheap right now and I still needed monsters to stake on my lands that are doing nothing.

If it's one thing I can't abide, it's assets doing nothing and if you have a minute, take a look at how many of those old cards are for sale on the marketplace. There's not a lot left, and many are levelled-up monsters.

Well, that’s me buying up the 1-12 BCX range as they are cheap, boast a 5x or 10x production modifier and don't cost 50,000 DEC to stake. It's more like 9000-1000 per land for the same production rate.

image.png
...'The Beta Water Elemental yields more Production than any of these reward cards and is only 25% of the Energy costs. It's little wonder the old cards are being snapped up'...

It's all very well thinking about staking your extra cheap 400BCX Pelicor Bandit until you have that... 'Oh shit'... moment when you realise it's 50,000 DEC to do it.

Land is incredibly unpopular right now, as @farpetrad, the main developer left Splinterlands some time ago and since then fuck all has happened. It's little wonder I have been picking up cheap plots for $15 each.

You can get them for as low as $10, but not in the Broken Lands, the territory where most of my land is. Unfortunately for me, it's a trendy area of Pretoria, but I wasn’t to know that when I got my initial 58 lands when released.

Since then, the total has crept up to 98 as of today's gamble buy. You can tell me if the gamble paid off?

Kinpath.PNG

The region of Kinpath sits on the southeast border of the Broken Lands and happened to have a bunch of unsurveyed plots for sale at $23 each.

Unsurveyed-ForSale.PNG

Considering ALL of the plots were sold long ago, the only way to buy them is either from HIVE.Engine or directly from the 'used' marketplace on the Splinterlands site.

Cheapest Plot on Open Market.PNG

The cheapest plot appears to be $23.50 and that will net you a PLOT in the Shimmering Coasts. Not a lot of good to me as it’s simply the wrong territory.

Kinpath Tract 9.PNG

I needed to weigh the odds in my favour. Had the Keep been taken in Kinpath, Tract 9?, had the Legendary plot been claimed, how many Epics, Occupied, Magical?

The info is at your fingertips but it's not very easy to navigate and involves clicking on this and that, while toggling filters.

Kinpath - Legendary.PNG

The Keep was gone, but it was a Castle tract; makes no difference to me.

I know per tract there’s only a single legendary, which was also snagged up.

Kinpath - 6 Epic.PNG

Epics, six has been claimed and I figure that’s a lot. There are generally around four per tract. I was not going to get a cool land with a purple halo around it.

Kinpath - 4 Occupied.PNG

Occupied are super rare and four had already been snagged. Like Epic, that’s a little more than usual which I figure to be three per tract.

It wasn’t looking good for far, were all these unsurveyed plots, of the boring natural common type?

Kinpath - 7 Magic.PNG

Lastly, I looked at Magic plots and could only find seven. Was I on to something? There can be up to twelve or more and looking at the surrounding tracts I could count up to fifteen in some.

Were these five unsurveyed tracts, all of the magical variety? I wasn't looking for a quick win, or to turn these over for a profit. I am all in, and want to see Lands flower and become something.

BuyHIVE.PNG

Fuck it, let's waste £100 and see. Fortunately, it's very easy for me to buy HIVE directly being in the UK via Transak, and my sterling fiat turned into 696 HIVE very quickly.

AboutToBuy.PNG

Within minutes the HIVE arrived in my wallet and was transferred into SWAP.HIVE, and then DEC, finally to be transferred into the Splinterlands game. This is all so easy if you know how. Less than five minutes to do everything.

Owned.PNG

The time for surveying was upon me, and after the first three reveals I visibly felt my dick shrivel up. Natural Common Tundra; what the fuck was going on?

What happened to the unmistakable theory of all five being Magical lands?

image.png

Tundra and Canyon for a long time were the poor relatives on land, but not so any more after a nice patch. These were my first Tundra and the type was very welcome, but not the lousy quality.

Number four was much better, a Natural Epic Tundra and the last one a Magic-Life Common Tundra, whoopee-do. I got one!

It had worked out to be decent, but my theory was out of the window; a gamble that paid off?

Result.PNG

I am not unhappy with the results, and now I have a third Epic card to join my other two brethren who live in Briarwood just across the border.

Cheapest Epic.PNG

Cheapest Magical.PNG

The cheapest combined Magic (any rarity) plus Epic in the Broken Lands will set you back $234. I did say it was an expensive territory. This is NOT Los Angeles South Central.

Cheapest Global Epic.PNG

Cheapest Global Magical.PNG

If you don't care about the territory and are OK slumming it then the same cards would set you back $96. That's cheaper than my deal, but factor on the THREE 'shit' lands at $10 each and you are talking $126.

I broke even on the deal at worst?

...and I DID get a cool land with a purple halo around it'...

I have been keeping track of land valuations and the cost of Beta cards to get them producing and they both seem to have stabilized if not bottomed. Not so long ago Magic land could be bought for $25 USD and now the cheapest is $45.

For the longest time I took no notice. When I spotted crap plots at $10, I did. Have you see them less than this?

No, I have not seen them under $10 and they have been around that price for a couple of months at least.

We could be at the bottom, but I had better zip my mouth 🤐

I keep seeing so much about Splinterlands, and it feels like I might’ve missed its prime. I’ve thought about jumping in, but for now, I’m focusing everything on Hive. I might regret it later, but oh well!

The game as of now is in the gutter. It might pull out, or might get stomped upon. Nobody knows. It can be played, and there is a game.., or it can be seen as an investment, a high risk one.

Thanks for taking the time to write about land, even though it seems like the forgotten part of the Splinterverse currently. I've never been that enthused about land. I hold the minimum 5 plots necessary to capture an rShare bonus of 5% for my battle rewards, but that's about it.

On my main account, I also have 5 RUNI helping me work the land for a 100% production bonus and a 15% rShare bonus for being in the runeguard. All these grain and research totals mean fuck all to me. There are just silly numbers go up while meaning very little while land development has been put on the back burner.

Is it even worth it to stake all that DEC to get my workers going? Who knows, I haven't really felt bothered to put in the time to run the numbers. I just took some of the extra Gold Foil maxed common reward cards I had and threw them only plots that gave me those 10% production bonuses by element.

I like your strategy of buying the older cards for the production bonus without having to tie up as much additional DEC to have them work the plots. Just like Yabapmatt intended. I like the function of land working as a sync for extra cards that are not needed for ranked battles. Each new sets brings on additional card inflation, which can be sent to land to manage the extras.

I wish I had such an easy onramp to accumulate more $HIVE, but access here in the US is quite limited, so I will continue to resort to my writing, commenting, and curating rewards to grow my Hive stake. I've rambled long enough, but thanks again for sharing Splinterlands content to your feed, especially about the seemingly forgotten resource of land use. Good luck to you on your new plots.

I'll be funneling my new funds into all these powerful new Rebellion promo cards, where my payments are sent to the decentralized @sps.dao account that is governed by us gameplayers and SPS stakeholders. I love that this new round of promo sales has already been paid in full by the SPSDAO to the Splinterlands team, and all sales of said promos go right back into the SPSDAO coffers. Although with lower valuations than I would like, I finally think the tokenomics of the Splinterlands ecosystem are in a much more healthy and positive place than I've seen in years.

The strategy and gameplay have improved considerably over the 2.5 years I've been playing daily. I'm incredibly hopeful for the continued success of the game going forward, despite the selloffs and missteps of the past. While there will always be shining new things popping up all over the Web3 landscape, Splinterlands (and Hive) is my home and I'm not going anywhere!

Long Live the Age of the Battlemage!

Can you not use the buy option from the peakd.com wallet? What options do you have when you do this? I used to buy HIVE via Binance, but bypass it now.

image.png

image.png

Nope, these options are not allowed in The Empire State... infringes on New York's vice grip on banking. I have other options in Arizona, but BinanceUS is currently shut off from taking fiat deposits. It takes forever to go through Coinbase or Gemini. But any CC service for Hive is dead to me. I am resigned to sending things to Binance to Pancakeswap Dex

simple-swap has worked well for me, try a small amount first.

Haha here I typecast you as a wayward urban explorer and not a hard core blockchain gamer! I gotta pay more attention I think!

I don’t realize there was so much to splinterlands and it seems you have the playability and economics down. Scooping up undervalued assets and putting them to work in a profitable manner makes for some good tactics and make hay while the cheap token and asset sun is shining.

Nice work chops! I will follow this adventure too.

I wish I did have the economics of this game down, down it all it has been for a while now. I can't get out... too invested. The bottom may be here already, I don't know. Today's jaunt was a gamble.

I didn't know the Land developer has jacked it in. I hope they get some people on it soon

There is a another dude doing it, he's getting up to speed and is talented. It's taking so long though.

I'm not surprised it's some complicated stuff

I never was in lands for real, I missed the opportunity to buy them at presale, because in these times I was not in game. I back year later with bull run. Now I focus on play only tournaments mainly in gold foil. Thanks for share your strategy!

I missed the opportunity to buy them at presale

They are cheap now, very cheap.. and getting as low as the pre-sale values. Buying them is a risk, it may all go to shit.

Actually, not a bad idea, thanks for the tip, as I still got maybe 20-30 lands with only 1 card staked. Yeah, I was speaking with Splinterlands guys at HiveFest (mostly Matt) and the direction they go seems to be stuff that brings money to the project, all kind of promo cards kind of.

I wish I could have chatted to Matt, but didn't make it. He was at Krakow in 2018, but I was keeping well away from that 'additive game' in those days.

It was interesting, he seems to have a good plan on focusing on Splitnerlands and let the other trials (Genesis etc) with their own teams. But he is still relying on a bull market to achieve what he wants for the project. Cannot be done yet.

and if I am honest with you I have thought about completely selling out

I have thought about this as well. I still believe that splinterlands has great potential but at the same time I want to have much more HBD. But so far I have not done this. It would be a shame to quit after all these years. Also slinterlands posts earn me the most Hive/ HBD . So I am not sure if I want to sell my splinterlands assets.

Selling now at the bottom? It could slide more, nobody knows. It's all one big gamble.

Congrats on the Epic and Magic land. If land booms, then I think you should be good, but only time will tell. I do wonder why you didn't buy DEC directly. I believe you can buy DEC with Transak as well.

I don't see DEC in the list of coins, and besides how would it integrate..., directly into the Splinterlands universe?

I haven't really done it, but I see it in the game interface:

image.png

From the explanation, it seems to just do the same thing as you did, but automated [Fiat to hive to DEC]. Looks to go directly to SPL as well instead of hive engine.

Great post, I think it was a wise move not to sell at the bottom, IMO the whole game and economy is on the rise now. It'll be interesting to see what happens with land. I think people are missing a trick with land and they might be surprised at how valuable research is

If there is an update, people will get interested again. Land is not a revenue generator, it was when it was sold, but not anymore. They will have to do something but this is fact.

I expect the new resources to come out soon, this should be a big sink for DEC if nothing else with all the new reward pools required

Seems like things are warming up again in Splinterlands. Now hopefully we get the next release of land here by end of year is the biggest concern I have at the moment.

SPS is warming up, Land not so much. This was a gamble that paid off, I was lucky.

IF SPS follow the altcoins season, every other SPL assets will follow (iguess) because its all tied together. Of course its all a risk but if people are still in SPL after this massive bearmarket.. i think SPL will rise. Kepp it up boys! :)

I’ve seen some posts about Splinterlands and I know it is about fighting
How come you have land on it too?

Land has been part of the game for a long time, it's a controversial topic as it is extremely late in development terms.

LEO Power Up Day - September 15, 2024

Impossible to know if Splinterlands has hit rock bottom, but one metric that makes me believe we have is the amount of accounts playing currently. Bot farms that were extracting value sold off which pushed SPS to it's all time low around $0.0041. Since then, we've seen some buying from larger whales but it seems the sell pressure has reduced greatly. I've looked across different assets similar to you now to see where the opportunities are.

if Splinterlands has hit rock bottom,

Yes I hear you. I a more interested in the Land game, if that's what you call a game. The real game, I only Brawl in, enough to keep me in the strategy loop to some degree. There are too many rules and permeations for my head now.

Yes the meta from the card game has gotten quite complex - which is great if you enjoy it but difficult if you only play casually. I do believe land will play a bigger role in the future as it is the only way to give older cards value.

100 quid for that warm fuzzy feeling ✨️

Been buying SL assets for a while, see you at the top!

Been buying SL assets for a while

I know you have, I have too, but only old cards 😀

SL need buyers for the new cards - ideally by new players!
