Documenting my Splinterlands Knowledge - Tournaments Update

Hello there.

In a lot of my posts, I usually talk about how tournaments are really good, and can be really helpful to new/weaker players. Not only will they gain experience from playing, but they can also learn the meta and new strategies that they can use in their ranked battles. If you've been playing a lot of tournaments, you might have noticed a recent change. Gone are the Free Entry tournaments, and they have been replaced with new ones that cost DEC. For newer players, this might be unthinkable. But for players that have been playing for a while, this is just going back to an earlier version.

One of the biggest reasons why they decided to bring back the entry fee is because a lot of players are just entering the tournaments and are not putting in any teams. This can result in some undeserving players that lucked out on opponents being able to go to the next round. Since there is no entry fee, some are saying that there are players joining with multiple accounts. It was a bit messy all around.

With regards to the entry fee, Clayboyn said that all of it will be burned. While the lower league ones might not be much, the higher league ones can cost up to 800 DEC. These will eventually add up to hopefully bring DEC back to peg.

If burning the DEC is not a good enough of an incentive to join tournaments, most of the tournaments has the possibility of paying for itself. Looking at one of the tournaments below, the cost of entry is 50 DEC. The lowest reward one can earn is 8.6 SPS. If we convert the 8.6 SPS to DEC, at current market price, we get 63 DEC. I said possibility, since even with the entry fee, some tournaments are still getting more than 128 players to get the guaranteed prize. Of course, doing better just means better prizes.

Now, as someone who joins the Silver tournaments and try to squeeze in on the lowest rewards back when entry was free, the reintroduction of the entry fees saddens me a bit. My deck is not good enough for me to consistently perform well. I will go back to my old strategy of just joining tournaments that don't have enough players to get guaranteed rewards, or join tournaments where I think I have a chance of performing well.

Speaking of performing well, I would also like to share a recent tournament where I was able to do well. I think this is one of if not the last Free Entry tournament I was able to join. It was a Novice tournament with 190 total players. Since I don't have a complete deck and my cards aren't max leveled, I usually perform well in Novice and Bronze tournaments. I can get a few wins in Silver, and sometimes make it to Round 2, but it isn't as easy to do.

I only had one loss in this tournament, and I am happy that I didn't tie with any players. This type of win makes it even sweeter. My only loss was in the second round against the second placer rtonline. I got 41.2 SPS for the top 4 finish.

Comparing it to the new rewards after the entry fee has been reintroduced, it is almost double. For just a 25 DEC fee that is a big jump. Of course, with these increased rewards, better players are also starting to join the lower league tournaments. I've seen Champ leaderboard players join Silver tournaments now. I can also feel the increased competition even in the Bronze and Novice leagues. But what it all boils down to is just to play better and be the best player.

That is it for my Tournaments update post. I moved my Rebellion reward cards review for another time because the Tournament fee is a big change for me and for those that do them. Don't hesitate to let me know what you think, and if you have suggestions for improvement.

You're welcome. Depending on your usual performance in tournaments, this change might be a good time to come back.

Thank you for showing the change in tournament entry fee and your considerations

Thanks for the upvote. I missed the old free entries, but I do think the DEC burn from the new fees will slowly add up to get DEC back up to peg. A necessary evil if you will.
