Splinterlands Social Media Challenge - cheap cards often win games!

in Splinterlands18 days ago

Hello everyone! This is my first entry for this week's Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. Today I'm sharing a battle of mine in Modern Diamond Ranked.

I fought an interesting battle in Modern Diamond ranked. This was an Eternal Tofu mirror and my opponent even had a max level Olivia of the Brook. Despite all of this, the star of the show was Venari Crystalsmith. This is an overprinted Chaos Legion reward card that almost everyone has and is selling for less than 2 cents per BCX. Still, a 4 mana Tank Healer with Dispel can do a lot of work! There's also Acid Shooter, a 2 mana epic from the Chaos Legion set. This card is currently being sold for $0,139 per BCX (although there aren't many copies at that price), which is less than double the burn value. Ever since Scattershot became more important because it could hit Camouflaged hits and because of the Lily Shieldpaw + Grimbardun Smith strategy, this was one of the biggest winners, even if the value doesn't show it. The combination of Scattershot and Poison is very powerful in long games.

This game has the following rule sets: Target Practice, Born Again, and Stampede. As I said before, we both picked Eternal Tofu as our summoner. They put Grimbardun Smith in front, followed by Fungus Flinger, Olivia, and Venari Marksrat. They finished the team with Goblin Psychic and Fungus Fiend. I started with Xenith Monk and used the Weapons Training combination of Grimbardun Smith, Aves Sturgis, and Lurking Puffer. I finished the team with Venari Crystalsmith and Acid Shooter. Their strategy focused on Olivia and abusing the Born Again with the Martyr units while mine focused on surviving with Grimbardun Smith taking the Snipe hits and trying to Poison everything.

They gave Triage and Scavenger to Olivia. I made the mistake of getting distracted and not choosing any Tactics in time! That's a pretty big handicap! In round 1, I killed Fungus Flinger twice. Acid Shooter hit Olivia but didn't Poison her. At the start of round 2, Olivia gained Poison. However, Venari Crystalsmith took out the Martyr buffs and the Mimiced Poison from her, with the Dispel. I was able to get Olivia down to 2 HP. In round 3, she gained Magic Reflect and Healed herself back to 5. I was still able to take her down once. In round 4, she gained Repair but it didn't matter. I finished her and their team was reduced to almost nothing. By round, 6 I had killed everything but their Grimbardun Smith, and in round 8, it was over.

Olivia at max level is very scary. However, the big flaw in their game plan was not taking into account how easy it was to Dispel her with the Target Practice rule set. If they had done like me with Grimbardun in the second position, it might have been a different story.
