Splinterlands Social Media Challenge - Another bad rule set combination

in Splinterlands7 days ago

Hello everyone! This is my second entry for this week's Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. Today I'm sharing a battle of mine in Modern Diamond Ranked.

I fought another "interesting" battle in Modern Diamond ranked. Last week I showed a game that combined Back to Basics, Up Close & Personal, and Little League. I said it was one of the worst possible combinations but I also said that Noxious Fumes would probably be worse than Little League, especially with a low mana cap. This time, I'm showing a game with Back to Basics, Up Close & Personal, and Earthquake. It has an even lower mana cap (22 vs 28) than last time. But Earthquake is not as bad as Noxious Fumes.

We both picked Eternal Tofu. Despite the 22 mana cap, since the game had the Up Close & Personal rule set, Thorns would always be very strong and worth spending 7 mana on. I went with Celestial Harpy, Vulguine, Blinding Reflector, Halfling Refugee, Soul Fiend, and Imperial Knight. They chose Gargoya Scrapper, Halfling Refugee, Bliding Reflector, Skyspire Yak, Soul Fiend, and Olivia of the Brook.

We both gave Scavenger and Triage to our last units. We also both lost our front units to Earthquake, after round 1. In round 2, I lost Vulguine to the attacks and my Fiend to the Earthquake. In round 3, their Halfling died to Thorns but so did my Reflector. The next Earthquake took out their Fiend. In the following round 4, my Halfling eliminated their Reflector. In round 5, we both lost 1 unit, leaving only Olivia and Imperial Knight. After the Earthquake, the game looked like this:

Both units have the same speed, but mine has 1 extra HP and 1 extra total attack power. Their only advantage is attacking first but it's not very relevant because of Thrns. There was no doubt that the game was mine. It ended in round 8, after the Earthquake, with my Knight at 3 HP.

Putting Olivia in the back was smart because it gave them an extra attack every turn, dealing magic damage. However, Imperial Knight's extra attack and big armor that took a lot of Earthquake damage, were key to winning this.

What do you all think about this game? Would you have done anything different? Let me know in the comments! Thank you for reading!!
