The Most Critical Splinterlands Decision I’ve Ever Faced

SPL More Land Decisions.png

As the Splinterlands ecosystem prepares to launch its long-awaited Land Cards, I’ve found myself staring at what is likely the most consequential decision I’ve faced since joining the game back in the early Alpha era. I don’t think anyone—myself included—anticipated just how massive the resource requirements would be. And now that the numbers are becoming clearer, the reality is setting in:

My entire Splinterlands trajectory may hinge on what I decide next.

When Years of Preparation Still Aren’t Enough

I’ve always approached Land with a long-term mindset. I’ve held on to every resource my plots have produced—never selling, rarely trading, and constantly planning for the future. Yet, even with that discipline,

it’s still not enough.

Early calculations showed that if I wanted to mint all the Land Cards allocated to me, I would need to acquire enormous amounts of additional resources—even in categories where I assumed I was secure.

My tracts are heavily weighted toward Stone and Iron, and despite years of stockpiling, both fall short. But the shock came from a different resource: Grain.

At one point, I held 170 million Grain, a pile that felt almost endless. Now?

If I mint my full allocation of cards, that entire stockpile will be gone—wiped out in a single event. And I’ll immediately fall below zero because my current land configuration doesn’t produce enough Grain to keep up.

The Cinder Dilemma: Value vs. Necessity

As if the resource requirements weren’t enough, the real curveball has been Cinder—the new burn-based material required for minting.

Even after weeks of market buying and the advantage of having a collection dating back to near-Alpha, I barely have the burnable volume needed. And the cards I would need to burn?

Some of them still carry more market value than the resulting Cinder is realistically worth.

This is the heart of my dilemma:

  • Do I burn valuable cards to produce Cinder at a questionable ROI?
  • Do I skip burning and simply buy Land Cards directly from the market instead?
  • Do I partially mint, focusing only on the rarest, highest-impact cards?
  • Or do I go all in, accepting the cost and betting on long-term Land dominance?

Every option has consequences—financial, strategic, and emotional.

The Decision That Defines My Path Forward

If I commit to minting everything:

  • I deplete almost every resource I’ve ever accumulated.
  • I put myself at an immediate Grain deficit.
  • I burn parts of my Collection that carry sentimental and real value.
  • But I also stake a massive future claim in the Land meta.

If I choose to purchase cards instead:

  • I preserve my Collection.
  • I avoid painful burns.
  • But I risk paying inflated market prices—and potentially losing my earned allocations entirely.

Either path is expensive. Either path could be brilliant or regrettable depending on how Land 2.0 unfolds.

This Is Exactly Why I Love—and Sometimes Dislike—Splinterlands

Only Splinterlands can create a moment like this:

A decision where economy, strategy, sentiment, and game theory collide.

It’s the part of the game I absolutely love—the depth, the layers, the long-term planning, the ability for players to carve their own paths. But it’s also the part that can be overwhelming, even frustrating. Because there are many games within the game, and every choice affects another.

As the release approaches, I still don’t know which direction I’ll take.

But I do know this:

Whatever I decide will shape my Splinterlands future more than any decision I’ve made in the past decade.

And strangely… that’s exciting.

I feel your pain.
I avoided land for just these reasons. There was too much time and effort to be invested just in resource allocation and creation.

I love my older cards too much to ever burn them and will stick to playing and buying up more of them but each player to their own.

We all have tough choices to make in the game economy.
