Survival Mode: A New Challenge in Splinterlands

The recent announcement from Splinterlands about the new Survival game mode has certainly caught the attention of the community. Originally teased as Hardcore mode, it’s now clear why the name fits. The premise is simple yet intriguing: every NFT card will have a limited lifespan during the game period. When a card is defeated in battle, it enters a cooldown period before it can be used again. These cooldowns vary by rarity, adding a new layer of strategy to the game.

A Fresh Demand for Cards

This new mode appears to be a creative attempt to reignite demand for cards. By enforcing these cooldown periods, players are incentivized to either expand their collections or strategically plan their battles. For those with large, well-rounded card collections, this mode could be an opportunity to showcase depth and adaptability. However, for others, the mode might feel inaccessible or overly demanding, as having multiple high-level cards will undoubtedly provide a significant edge.

Catering to the Whales?

It’s hard to ignore that Survival mode seems targeted toward the most engaged and well-resourced players—the whales. While some in the community might consider me a whale, this mode is really for the mega-whales who can leverage multiple copies of powerful cards to dominate. As someone heavily invested in land—where many of my extra cards reside—I find it hard to justify moving those assets just to participate. The idea of competing against highly skilled bots for SPS rewards doesn’t appeal to me either, as my focus remains on building within the ecosystem rather than grinding for additional SPS, which I already have plenty of.

A Step Forward for NFTs

Despite my reservations, I appreciate the innovation behind Survival mode. It’s a reminder of what sets Splinterlands apart: its ability to bring NFTs front and center. This game mode could potentially attract players who are drawn to the unique mechanics of web3 gaming, where assets have tangible value and strategic use cases.

More importantly, this development underscores the team’s commitment to keeping the game fresh and engaging. In a space as competitive as blockchain gaming, staying relevant requires constant evolution. Whether or not Survival mode becomes a hit, it’s encouraging to see Splinterlands trying new things to maintain its position in the ecosystem.

A Personal Take

For me, Survival mode might be more of a spectator sport than a regular activity. While I admire the creativity behind it, my current focus on land and the challenges of playing against bots diminish my enthusiasm. However, I’ll be watching closely to see how the community responds. If the mode gains traction and proves its value, it could mark a turning point for Splinterlands.

Innovation is the lifeblood of web3, and Survival mode could be exactly what the Splinterlands ecosystem needs to thrive. Whether or not I dive into this new challenge, I’m hopeful that it’ll bring renewed excitement and energy to the game. As always, the drama within Splinterlands continues—and so does my cautious optimism for its future.

I agree, Survival mode is for whales. However, I will probably play it a bit. I do have some extra CL cards and those will be out of modern soon anyway. If I don't end up moving to wild, I might as well also play with CL cards in there. Even if I go to wild, I can still play it sometimes.

I do hope they don't allow bots in there. I also hope there's a way to not mess up rented cards. It wouldn't be fun to rent a card to someone else and get it back in a big cooldown.

I am hearing more people considering it as well so may be a good thing for the CL market...

It might be, but it won't save CL. It might go from selling at burn value to somewhere between that and double the price.

survival of the bots mode, fun stuff

I' not keen on playing it much myself either, but if it creates demand for cards and asset prices go up, that is a benefit to SPS and the ecosystem. Better yet, the prize for this whale format will be coming directly from Splinterlands company (SMC), so initially there won't be any impact to the SPS currently given out in ranked play. Ultimately, it will come down to the SPS stakeholders to decide whether Survival Mode is worthy of taking a cut from SPSDAO rewards for the new format.

At the end of the day, if it is good for the ecosystem, then this will be a lasting format. I think it will be interesting how the strategies around the format develop. It will also be interesting to see how soulbound reward cards will be handled. I caught an Aftersound video where he was saying 80% of all summoner BCX are Soulbound Chaos Legion summoners. YIKES!
