Reflections on the Heloise Promo Card Auction in Splinterlands

Splinterlands has once again introduced a unique Promo card to the market, this time taking the form of an auction for Heloise. As someone who prides themselves on being a Collectionist, this development has left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, the allure of owning a highly rare card is undeniable; on the other, the increasing frequency of such releases is starting to weigh heavily on my resources and priorities.

The Stress of Collectionism

For years, I’ve made it a point to acquire rare cards in Splinterlands, including iconic names like Prince Julian, Archmage Arius, and The Mighty Dricken. These cards aren’t just rare—they’re symbolic of the ecosystem’s depth and history. Owning them feels like holding a piece of Splinterlands' legacy. However, the recent streak of promo cards and special releases is creating pressure that even the most devoted collectors might struggle to keep up with.

My focus has been firmly set on land, which I believe holds immense promise for the future of Splinterlands. With resources directed toward optimizing my land strategy, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify diverting attention—and DEC—toward every new card release, no matter how exclusive or enticing.

Auction Dynamics and Market Concerns

The auction format for Heloise brings a fresh approach to card sales, but it’s not without its challenges. Only 100 copies will be minted, making it one of the rarest cards in the game. Naturally, this rarity sparks interest and competition. However, the dynamics of the auction market are concerning.

Reports of certain community members artificially raising the floor price at their whim undermine the integrity of the auction. While scarcity and competition are inherent to such events, market manipulation—intentional or not—creates an uneven playing field that could discourage broader participation. I believe that a free-flowing market where supply and demand dictate prices organically is healthier for the ecosystem in the long term.

Why I’m Sitting This One Out

For the first time in a while, I’ve decided to sit on the sidelines and watch this auction unfold. It’s not an easy choice for someone who has always sought to complete their collection, but it feels like the right one for now. My priorities remain on land development, and the current auction dynamics don’t align with my vision for sustainable participation in the game.

That said, I wish the team and the DAO the best in this venture. Promo cards like Heloise can bring excitement and engagement to the community, and I hope this release achieves those goals without alienating players who, like me, feel the strain of keeping up.

Splinterlands has always been a game of strategy, both on the battlefield and in the marketplace. As the ecosystem evolves, I hope to see more balanced approaches to introducing new cards and features that consider the diverse priorities of its player base.

For now, I’ll continue to watch and learn, adapting my strategy where needed while keeping an eye on the big picture. If anything, this experience reinforces the importance of focusing on long-term goals and staying true to one’s personal game plan.

I have stayed away from all of the recent promos. There have been good cards but paying $550 (if DEC was at peg) for a max level legendary just doesn't feel right. Heloise is even worse because the price is even higher and you can't choose to get a lower level. The game is becoming more and more pay to win. At least, some of those were paid in credits, which means they paid more than they would have in DEC.
