Rental prices are exploding
With approximately 18 hours remaining before the current season ends, the prices in the rental market (especially for gold foil cards) have skyrocketed. As of writing, the rental prices for majority of gold foil epic cards are at >300 DEC/day, and >1k DEC per day for gold foil legendary cards. For context, I was still able to rent gold foil epic cards and legendary cards last week at 10 to 20 DEC/day and <100 DEC/day, respectively. It is amazing to see how much rental prices change towards the end of the season.
As a renter, it has become more challenging for me to boost up my power and try to compete in higher leagues. That is why after being able to play in Gold III for a day, I deliberately decided to stay in Bronze (for 4 days now), finish my daily quest consistently, and take my time to further improve in the game. Luckily, the season rewards adjustment will be implemented next season, and I still get to open 22 reward chests for this season!
What am I doing as a renter?
One of the obvious things that you can do as a renter is to simply absorb the price, rent the cards available, and hope that you get lucky with the chests. This way, you will still get to profit regardless of the renting costs. However, luck has not been on my side lately, so I deliberately decided to stay in Bronze towards the season-end.
Before deliberately staying in Bronze, I haven't done the proper math of whether or not the trade-off in renting cards will still be worth it. But given that I do not want to stress out myself in having to worry if I get to breakeven with my rentals, paired with my current unlucky streak in opening chest rewards, I just decided to stay in a league that my CP handle, and treat this game as a marathon and not a sprint. I am planning to play Splinterlands for a long time anyway, so what's with the rush?
Anyway, for those of you who are not yet sure what you want to do if the rental prices remain elevated by next season. I hope that sharing my thought process will help you somehow.
My if-then-else scenarios for the upcoming seasons
If rental prices significantly decline at the start and towards the middle of the season
- I will rent a full set of the cards that I want and try to move up to a higher league for higher DEC and chest rewards.
If price remains elevated all season
- I will stay in the highest league possible based on my collection power, continue to learn the game
- Rent few relatively cheaper cards to remain competitive in that league
- Diligently finish daily quest, continuously build on my collection
- Stack on SPS, wait for the Chaos Legion pack, and hope that I get good cards & hope that the new pack release significantly lowers rental prices in the market
There you have it! I hope this post will be able to somehow help renters who are still having second thoughts on what they should do with their rentals.
Update:
1 hour and 10 mins to go before the current season ends, here are the rental prices for last minute (or hour) shoppers:
Gold foil epic cards are almost the same, while gold foil legendary cards are at a whopping >2,000 DEC/ day
