The Dragons Of Splinterlands
DRAGONS - the almighty and all-powerfull creatures in all universes. Almost all dragons in every text and stories bring majesty and extravagance. Splinterlands is not an exception. Dragons make the lore of Splinterlands with so much fascination and engagement. In this post, we will explore the different species of dragons in the Splinterverse. We will delve into their lore to understand their origins and role in the different editions of SplinterHistory.
Races of Dragons
Dragons in Splinterlands are either True Dragons or Dragonkin. True Dragons are highly intelligent creatures that generate their own form of elemental mana. Their mastery of elemental mana makes them superior among other species exemplifying wisdom and sophistication. The species considered as True dragons are Chromatic, Gemstone, Lung, and Primordial dragons.
Chromatic Dragons
Chromatic Dragons are characterized by their scale color and breath weapons. There exists a Chromatic Dragon that is believed to be a Silver Shield genetic experiment. It has five heads each of different element representing the subspecies of Chromatic Dragons. The subspecies are Black, Blue, Gold, Green, Red and White Dragons.
Black Dragons
Black Dragons has their horns wrap around the sides of their head and pointing forward. They have longer body, thinner tail and a large frill around the upper part of their neck. Ancient black dragons are almost purple in color due to mature dragons tend to lighten in color. They live in mountainous and underground caverns near swamps and bogs. Black dragons breath acid that can corrode even shields and armor.
Korjak, a Black dragon of Mortis (illustrated above), is the only Dragon who signed the Dark Contract - causing him to be reborn as a Dark Eternal. Korjak has the power to rule over other dragons with his immense body but prefers to dedicate himself to Dark Eternity.
Blue Dragons
Single-horned dragons with large frilled ears and think, ridged tail. Compared to other dragons, their wings are proportionally larger. They burrow themselves in rock formations in desert terrain. They breath lightning that can pierce the sky. Known as the only truly wild Dragons left, the Lightning Dragons of Draykh-Nahka (illustrated above) are considered of Blue Dragon species. They are situated in a rocky land called Dragon's Roost.
Gold Dragons
Gold Dragons (illustrated above) are distinguished by several large horns that protrude from the sides of their head. They have their wings connected to their body from the shoulders to the tip of their tail. Their home is located in massive caverns deep within the mountains and underground. Cone of fire and a weakening gas is their breath weapon. There is only one Gold Dragon in existence. Helio, the Great Golden Dragon and Sun God presides over the great Dragon Congress.
Green Dragons
Green Dragons typically has bony spines joined together by skin in a webbed fashion. Their lair is located in cliffside caverns, often near bodies of water. Their breath weapon is a cloud of poisonous gas. There aren't any note-worthy Green Dragons in the Splinterverse yet except for the dragons used in Dragonsguard.
Red Dragons
Compared to other chromatic dragons, Red Dragons have their massive size and wingspan. Mountains, calderas and volcanoes are known homes to Red Dragons. Their breath weapon is a cone of fire. The largest Red Dragons can be seen outside the Centrum City walls. The largest of them all is Agor LongTail (illustrated right). A host of dragonbord pays tribute to her twice a year on the equinox. She offers wisdom back to them which is only a small fraction of her eternal knowledge.
White Dragons
With streamlined head topped with a swept-back crest made of spines and webbed skin and a dewlap lined spines under their chin, White Dragons are considered the least intelligent of the chromatic dragons. Their lairs are in arctic habitats such as atop snowy mountain peaks, glaciers and icebergs. Cone of frost is their breath weapon. There are no known White Dragons yet in Praetoria.
Gemstone Dragons
Gemstone Dragons are unique in terms of their scales made with various precious gemstones. They differ in appearances with some have horns of various shapes and sizes, some may have spines and frills webbed by skin and some might have other draconic features or not. The only feature Gemstone dragons have in common is the prevalent ridges along the tops of their heads, necks, bodies and tails. These type of dragons live in places with humid climate. There are three known subspecies of Gemstone Dragons, they are Diamond, Emerald and Sapphire Dragons. Tulafra, the only known Gemstone Dragon which is a Diamond Dragon, is not actually made of diamonds; she is simply named for her nearly indestructible exoskeleton. She is not the strongest or largest of the Dragons, but she is difficult to bring down in battle. She lives in a huge ground floor penthouse of Centrum City.
Lung Dragons
Lung dragons are distinguished by their long, serpentine body; mane and other hair that grows in varied places on their body; long whiskers that hang from their upper jaw; a pair of antlers that protrude backward from their brows; and spiny ridges along their backs. They are wingless and fly by innate magical means, and their scales and hair can be of any color. They tend to make their lairs in caverns near the peaks of remote mountain ranges. Unlike most other true dragons, lung dragons do not have a breath weapon, instead they rely solely on their magical abilities, which vary with each individual wyrm.
Primordial Dragons
The largest and most powerful of the true dragons and can be any range of colors. Almost all primordial dragons are able to traverse the planes of existence at will.
Chaos Dragons
Distinguished by a plated, armor-like hide covered in horns and spikes. They can be any range of colors and reach lengths of over one-hundred and fifty meters (492.1’). All chaos dragons are driven by a primal urge to undermine and destabilize the natural order of any realm they inhabit; those that are good do so to induce beneficial change, while those that are evil do so simply to sow destruction. They tend to make their lairs in massive caverns within the highest peaks of the tallest mountain ranges. Their breath weapon varies with each individual wyrm.
Guardian Dragons
Distinguished by their oversized wings, bony plates upon their back, and a pair of swept-back horns atop their head. Even among the primordials, guardian dragons are massive and can reach lengths of over two-hundred meters (656.2’). They typically serve as custodians of ley lines: the boundaries that separate the realms and planes of existence from one another. When the boundaries of their realm are firm, they will often enter into what is known as the Sleep of Ages—a deep slumber that can last for many millennia—waking only when the ley lines are threatened. Too large for a conventional lair, these gargantuan wyrms often bury themselves deep within the earth or make their homes at the bottom of a body of water large enough to accommodate them (they are able to hold their breath in perpetuity). Their breath weapon can be any form of elemental magic but typically correlates to the color of their scales.
Aside from True Dragons, there exists Dragonkin. Dragonkin's can be Elemental or simply Dragonkin.
Elemental Dragons
Elemental dragons are composed primarily of a single element and technically classifiable as elementals. However, they more closely resemble their saurian-like kin. Their appearance, colors, habitats, and breath weapons vary relative to their element or elemental aspect (e.g., fire, lightning, darkness, etc.), and they range in size from as small as a pseudodragon to as large as a chromatic wyrm.
Dragonkin
Dragonkin are a draconic race related to true dragons, although their intelligence level varies from human-like to beast-like, and they have significantly shorter lifespans. The subspecies under Dragonkin are:
- Dragon Turtles
- Drakes
- Fey Dragons
- Landwyrms
- Pseudodragons
- Wyverns
