BATTLE LINK -- January 9, 2025 -- Day 9 of 365 vs. @xsuilx
Back to SPS DAO tournament action with today's battle, coming from Day 2 of the Gloridax Wild Diamond Invitational Gold Foil event. I had started on Day 1 with a perfect 9-0 mark, but the competition was a bit tougher on Day of course. I also didn't manage my time well and found myself jamming these battles quickly because the round was about to end. But that didn't stop me from finding another interesting battle to share with my Splinterlands community!
The 99-mana battle had three rulesets: Broken Arrows, Reverse Speed, and Odd Ones Out. Two elements were excluded: Water and Dragon. Battling against my guildmate XsuilX, I know he has access to max GF Tofu, so with both of its dual elements available, that's what I put him on. However, with the reverse speed rule, I felt that Fire and Death provided much better options. With range monsters banned from battle, Lorkus buffing melee and magic fit well for my team.
The featured card of the battle is the new soulbound Rebellion reward epic monster, Arachne Weaver. Despite not having the monster at max level (where it gets poison), even at Level 4, it helped my team with the new Corrupted Healing ability. Instead of healing just the tank, Corrupted Healing heals all monsters to 70% of their base health and then their base health is reduced by one. In a high-mana battle where the monsters have big health numbers, Corrupted Healing gains even more value.
XsuilX played a strategy with three different backline taunt monsters in his lineup -- Iziar, Bera Dallin, and Mycelic Slipspawn -- supported by the triage from Tofu and Djinn Renova. His goal was to attack the front of my lineup with Mantaroth and poison the back of my lineup with Silverblade Assassin. He strategically placed the taunt martyr between those two threats to power up their attacks even more after Iziar died.
One thing XsuilX didn't strategize for was the reverse speed rule. Except for the 5 magic attack from Barashkukor that I needed in my lineup, all my other monsters had speeds of 1 or 2. Fortunately for me, he also selected Slipspawn which has the slow ability, and in reverse speed, this was an important benefit for my monsters to attack before his.
I was also quite fortunate that XsuilX didn't have any opportunity monsters in his lineup. Without a taunt monster of my own, he would have been able to take out my most important support monster, Arachne Weaver, after just a few rounds. But he didn't and my lineup stood strong.
Despite getting poisoned during Round 1 and being battered by dual sneak attacks, Barashkukor continued to gain large chunks of life round after round from the life leech tactic provided by Lorkus. Up front, Grum and Gorlodon have huge health numbers, so despite getting low a few times from Mantaroth's big blast attacks, Weaver healed all three of them back to safety.
When the dust settled, my team of six was still standing strong, while XsuilX's monsters were all laid to waste. As guildmates, I don't get to play against him in brawls, but it is always fun to pull one over on him in tournament play, knowing how talented he is as a player. Maybe next time, buddy!
