BATTLE LINK -- January 8, 2025 -- Day 8 of 365 vs. @learnersmind
Welcome back to Modern Champion League ranked! It is the first time in the new year that I've had the time to sit down and play some Modern battles, so I decided to take a break from the tournament action for a day to highlight some new Rebellion cards. Not to worry, I'll be back with a BOTD from the conclusion of the Gloridax Wild Diamond Invitational Gold Foil event in my next article!
The 53-mana battle had three rulesets: Wands Out, Deflection Field, and Equalizer. Only two elements, Life and Fire, were available, further narrowing the options for this battle. Because Life provides access to the dual attack (and broken mimic ability) of Olivia and Rathe's void armor as summoner, I successfully predicted that my opponent would go that route. Instead, I tried something new with some new Rebellion cards.
Enter today's featured card, the Rebellion soulbound reward rare monster, Continuum Seer. This monster's main strength is its extremely high base speed -- EIGHT! -- combined with the phase ability which allows it to evade magic attacks as well as melee and range attacks. Even more deadly than its 3 magic attack for 4 mana, is its backfire ability, which deals two damage any time an attack is missed. This happens a lot because of its high speed and can hit magic monsters since it has phase.
Of course, Seer also comes with its drawbacks. Due to its low health of two, it's very fragile. However, this battle had the equalizer ability, so the drawback was mitigated with a boost to its health. My opponent opted to play the impactful void taunt legendary Iziar (my featured card of BOTD 7), which boosted every monsters' health to 14!
Seer fully took advantage of that extra 12 health to torment my opponent as the tank, dealing dozens of damage through backfire. But Seer also had plenty of support. The new Rebellion promo legendary Fizbo provided tank heal, which really benefits from the big health boost provided to all monsters from the Equalizer rule.
Sorriel the Bale was another impactful support monster for a few reasons. Its blind ability made Seer much more elusive, and its rust ability neutralized most of the benefit that Rathe provides with its void armor.
Finally, the new Rebellion soulbound neutral rare Chaos Adjutant is another great add for Equalizer battles. Its combination of scattershot and poison can infect monsters in the opponent's backline and eat away at some of those high health totals. Sadly for my fellow Kingdom of Glory member, his monsters struggled with my setup.
While my Lorkus-powered magic attack pummeled Iziar and the supporting cast, my opponent could not even get through Seer combined with the tank heal from Fizbo. This is definitely a setup I will try again, even potentially against an Earth Immortalis lineup, in a Wands Out, Equalizer battle. Better luck next time, mate!
