BATTLE LINK -- January 1, 2025 -- Day 1 of 365 vs. @wommi
I'm starting the new year off with some BOTD content and hopefully, I'll be more consistent with it. I've renewed my commitment to playing my daily tournament battles, so expect a lot of varied replays from different formats and leagues in my 2025 BOTD series.
With that in mind, here's a fun battle from the New Years Eve Rebellion tournament sponsored by Splinterlands. The free KYC event gave max modern collections to all 411 entrants competing for the Rebellion pack prize, so everyone competed on equal footing with complete collections.
The 28-mana battle on Day 1 of the event had 3 rulesets: Equal Opportunity, Armored Up, and Wands Out. Only two elements were available, Dragon and Life, which made summoner selection a bit easier. In magic-only, there is an argument to be made for choosing Rathe to give everyone on the team void armor and utilize the extra armor from the battle rule. However, with such a narrow restriction like magic-only, combining Dragon and Life elements opened up many more options.
The featured card of the battle is the Chaos Legion legendary Dragon summoner, Lily Shieldpaw, who showed the power of its camouflage ability in the opportunity battle. By giving my whole team camouflage, I directed all of my opponent's damage to my Void Dragon, demonstrating its durability and evasiveness in this magic-only battle.
In comparison, my opponent chose Akane as his summoner, but couldn't take advantage of its ambush tactic. They were able to stack some extra damage on my dragon with the ambush attacks, but that didn't help their battle plan too much.
Although my dragon got hit with affliction early in Round 1 by Dax Paragon, Oshuur brought the dragon back with resurrect and then healed it back up. With Dax off the board, there was no way for my opponent to kill my Void Dragon and my team easily took the battle home.
Without the help of Lily's camouflage, my potent magic attack focused on my opponent's lowest-health monsters first, easily taking out Time Mage (twice) and Dax. Since my attacks weren't focused on the tank, my opponent's two tank healers were not at their best. They were the next two monsters to fall without providing much help to heal the tank.
By the end of the battle, their Void Dragon was facing down my full team of four monsters and it didn't last much longer after that. Although they were able to kill my Void Dragon once, Oshuur brought it back so I finished the battle with everyone still standing.
One option that would have served the opponent well to break up my Lily strategy is the new Chaos Adjutant, a Rebellion neutral reward card with magic attack, scattershot, and poison. The scattershot gets around Lily's camouflage strategy and the poison helps to deal sustained damage to the backline monsters it poisons. Better luck next time, mate!
