BATTLE LINK -- December 27, 2024 -- Day 362 of 366 vs. @star-shroud
This BOTD 362 comes from another SPS DAO tournament event, the Fight Pit Diamond Series event, which paired Alpha with Chaos Legion. Predictably, most of the monsters used in this event were from the newer set than the original set, and this battle is no different. Although I do own a fair share of maxed Alpha cards, they didn't really factor into this tournament that much.
This 44-mana battle had three rulesets: Odd Ones Out, Noxious Fumes, and Counterspell. Two elements were excluded from team selection: life and dragon. I thought about trying a strategy similar to my former guildmate Star-Shroud, centered around the immune Forgotten One, but I was worried I wouldn't be able to protect it while also dealing damage. Fire isn't really known for its high-health monsters, so I was concerned about the survivability of a team using Tarsa or Jacek.
Instead, I focused my team on making the most of the Chaos Legion legendary water soulbound reward card, Kulu Mastermind. I knew the poison would trigger its enrage ability for Round 2, enabling it to deal EIGHT trampling opportunity melee damage for each attack. Lucky for me, my opponent's fast scattershot team hit Mastermind with a range attack, allowing it to attack for 8 damage on its first attack!
Mastermind also allowed me to give the ultra-elusive Noa The Just weapon training as tank, since I figured there wouldn't be much magic in my opponent's lineup. Noa was a great counter to the opposing tank, the slow giant Grum. Just as I hoped, Grum suffered from backlash damage a few times for missing the attack on Noa and allowed me to win the battle of the tanks.
Elsewhere in my lineup, I focused on health preservation since I needed to outlast my opponent without using any immunity monsters or cleanse in the poison battle. Instead, I had triage from the Mandarin, tank heal from the Guardian, life leach from Kye, and repair from Swamp Spitter. Of course, the extra two health (and trample) from my summoner Possibilius made a difference too!
With the recurring shield from Spitter and the life leech health gained by Kye, my two rear monsters soaked up a ton of sneak damage from my opponent's Striker and Uraeus. My plan worked quite well, as my lineup outlasted the fire monsters that suffered from lower health. It was especially rewarding to see my trample strategy with Mastermind work so well.
Star-Shroud's effort to pump up the attack of Forgotten One using double martyr made it a force to be reckoned with. But by the time it had worked up to the tank position to be able to deal damage, it was fighting 6 vs. 2 against most of my team. In the end, ironically, my null attack monster Noa got the last two kills trampling over the opposition.
My full team of six monsters all managed to survive the poison battle since it ended quickly in Round 2. The sustain strategy worked well and overall it is always fun playing in these dual random-set tournaments -- I highly recommend it! Thanks @fatjimmy!

Absolute destruction! I love Noa, shame that Venka made it so much less reliable for ranked matches.
Yeah... the solution for Grim Smith really trashed the playability of so many other cards out there!
Bro... that is SICK... L4 GFL Kulu Mastermind?!?
Stays beasting with that ENRAGE!!
Oh shit... GF EVERYTHING!
