BATTLE LINK -- December 24, 2024 -- Day 359 of 366 vs. @buloy
As a little break from the Modern Champion action, today's BOTD comes from my Tier 5 brawl Fray 20 -- Gold Foil Modern Silver League against the @neoxian brawler @buloy, a longtime rival among the top-tier guilds.
This 57-mana battle had two rulesets: Fire & Regret and Melee Mayhem. With only two elements excluded, death and fire, I immediately thought of using Tofu to counter the melee and assumed my opponent would too. To my surprise, Buloy had a Lily lineup taking advantage of the heavy-hitting Chaos Dragon and using life without any of its Gladiators.
My featured card of the battle is the Rebellion epic soulbound reward card, Olivia of the Brook. At the lower leagues, she lacks the reflection shield to protect her in those Tofu mirrors. But luckily, Buloy ran with Lily and didn't have the threat of thorns to keep Level 3 Olivisa in check.
When I first looked at these lineups, I didn't like my chances, and after the first few rounds played out, I disliked them even more. Without much meaningful magic damage, Beran Dallin held her own in 2nd position with triage support. In retrospect, my Quora may have been a better choice for the scavenger and triage tactic, since I had already powered her up with shield from Mana Warden.
But due to the asynchronous nature of brawl battle, I had incomplete information for the selection of tactics. I gave the tactic to Olivia so she would be better equipped to survive a Tofu mirror match. Things weren't looking much better 20 rounds later.
But Olivia valiantly led the comeback, sustaining herself with triage and self-heal to keep her head above water while my opponent's monsters fell to fatigue damage. It is a testament to the strength of the mimic ability to completely take over a battle if given enough time. With the high mana cost, this battle shows Olivia's potential to dominate the opposition all on her own.
