BATTLE LINK -- December 23, 2024 -- Day 358 of 366 vs. @bjangles
I'm going back to the well for another BOTD against the host with the most -- @bjangles -- as we duel for the second straight day in Modern Champion ranked. Our 53-mana battle had three rulesets: Up Close & Personal, Equalizer, and Blood and Sunder. Dragon was the only banned element and with the melee-only rule, Tofu was the obvious choice for summoner.
The featured card of the battle is the Riftwatchers life legendary, Inevitable. It was one of two monsters of mine that differed from my opponent's choices. Truth be told, my legendary tank barely outlived his common Grimbardun Fighter, so it didn't give me that much of an advantage. The real difference in the battle was my Halfling Refugee in 3rd position against his Stitch Leech in 6th position.
Venka and Riklauniman are the two most important monsters in the battle, so putting as much health in front of them was my reasoning for the Refugee in 3rd position. Due to all the triage on my team, the damage dealt by the Stitch Leech sneak attack was mitigated. My Refugee didn't deal any damage at all, but it soaked up some big attacks that allowed my heavy hitters to clear his Olivia before mine.
If BJangles had put the Stitch Leech in 3rd position ahead of Venka and Riklauniman, I think I would have been in trouble. Leech would have absorbed more attacks than my Refugee did, and allowed him to attack into my heavy hitters before I could return the favor. But with the Leech in the back, all the health it gained from life leech didn't really matter since it was doomed to lose a head-to-head battle with Venka and Rik.
