Now with a bit of time on my hands for Season 144, I've started playing Modern ranked battles and @sps.dao tournaments more frequently again. Today's encounter is from the recent Gold Foil Modern Gold League event, a 48-mana battle with three rulesets: Explosive Weaponry, Armored Up, and Up Close & Personal.

With the earth element available, it made perfect sense to select Eternal Tofu to take advantage of the thorns ability to punish opposing melee monsters. Of course, in Up Close & Personal battles, all monsters are melee monsters, giving Tofu a huge edge. My opponent preferred a speed strategy with Jacek and Lurker leading the line, but three of his six monsters didn't even get to attack in Round 1.

With the potential of my opponent running thorns as well as the threat of blast damage, reflection shield was a very important ability to consider for this battle. Today's featured card is the unique Ethereum-based promo card, Runi.

Typically, I'm used to Runi as a Level 4 monster since it is a 1 BCX card that comes fully leveled up, but in this gold league tournament, I only got to play it at Level 3 (like in the cover picture). The only difference for Runi between Level 3 and Level 4 is 1 point of melee attack.

The reflection shield ability came in clutch for me and was instrumental in winning this battle. My opponent and I both ran Kinjo in 2nd position to nullify the blast damage inflicted on the tank. But what made the difference was putting Runi in 5th position to nullify the blast damage dealt by my opponent's two sneak monsters. Without Runi, Striker and Ureaus would have pummelled my backline with damage.

Of course, in a blast ruleset, Runi's opportunity attack means more monsters would take blast damage, and the true strike ability also guaranteed a successful attack despite Runi's slow speed. This came in clutch against my opponent's speedy team, including their taunt tank. And Tofu did what it does against melee monsters, punishing them with thorns damage as my team cruised to an easy victory.
