Hello Splinterlands fans! Welcome to what will be the last community engagement challenge of the year, and this time it's focused on encouraging us to reflect as dedicated Splinterlands players. Since the game boils down to PvP encounters—that is, different iterations of the same game mode: Modern Ranked, Wild, Frontier, Tournaments, and Brawls—all of these formats are ultimately PvP. So, I'll be discussing my development in the game, focusing mainly on the gameplay aspects that have helped me grow as a player. Talking about strategies or specific cards is pointless considering how hostile Splinterlands is when Modern sets transition to Wild, introducing new cards that virtually nullify the function of older ones. The best example of this was the Rebellion set. So, let's see how I gained the experience to grow in the game.
Hola amigos de Splinterlands! Bienvenidos al que sería el último community engagement challenge del año y que en esta ocasión esta enfocado a llamarnos a una especie de introspección como jugadores dedicados en Splinterlands y bueno considerando que el juego se resume a enfrentamientos Pvp, es decir, distintas iteraciones de un mismo modo de juego: ranking Moderno, Wild, Frontier, Torneos y Brawls. Todos esos formatos son en última instancia Pvp, entonces abordaré como ha sido mi maduración en el juego, enfocándolo principalmente en las formas del juego que me han ayudado a crecer como jugador ya que hablar de estrategias o de cartas particulares es fútil considerando lo hostil que es Splinterlands cuando las ediciones de moderno pasan a wild, sacando nuevas cartas que virtualmente anulan la función de cartas antiguas y el mejor ejemplo fue la edición Rebellion. Veamos entonces como fui adquiriendo la experiencia para crecer en el juego.
Splinterlands has changed a lot since its beginnings. I joined when the Untamed Edition was halfway through its lifespan and the Dice Mini Edition cards were already on sale. So, I was only able to buy a few Beta cards/Archons, even the Beta reward cards. You could say that I started playing Splinterlands with the Untamed Edition in early 2021, right at the height of the NFT bubble. It was in this edition that I made my first Archon purchases, which, in my experience, I consider the most important investment you can make in the game, since Archons dictate the monsters you can summon. I still have my Untamed/Dice Archons; I got many of them from packs I won in reward chests. In fact, my Byzantiny Kitty was my first Legendary Archon, obtained through this initial reward chest system.
Splinterlands ha cambiado mucho desde sus inicios, yo entre en un momento en el que la edición Untamed estaba a mitad de su vida útil y ya estaban a la venta las cartas de la mini edición Dice. Así que fueron muy pocas las cartas/arcontes Beta que pude comprar, incluso las cartas de recompensa beta. Se puede decir que fue con la edición Untamed que inicié en Splinterlands a inicios de 2021 en pleno auge de la burbuja NFT, fue en esta edición que hice mis primeras compras de arcontes que dentro de mi experiencia considero la inversión más importante que puedes hacer dentro del juego ya que los arcontes dictarán los monstruos que puedes invocar en el campo de batalla. Yo todavía mantengo mis arcontes Untamed/Dice muchos de ellos los obtuve en packs que me ganaba en cofres de recompensa, de hecho mi Bizantiny Kitty fue mi primer arconte legendario, conseguido en esta primera forma de cofres de recompensas.
Of course, as you can see, not all the necessary Archons were available, but that's what Ghost cards were for—playable cards that you didn't own. This no longer exists, and this is where I emphasize that things weren't the same as before. A player's progress, experience, and the weight of the decisions made by a player who started in 2021 are of little help to a player starting in 2025. That's why I liked the theme of this community engagement challenge, because it's a way to highlight the bad decisions Splinterlands made when the NFT bubble burst, and the disappearance of Ghost cards was one of them. However, this has been somewhat corrected by creating a new format: Frontier, which is a free-to-play ranking system for new players.
Por supuesto como puedes ver no eran todos los arcontes necesarions, pero para eso existían las cartas fantasmas, es decir cartas jugables pero que no eran de tu propiedad. Actualmente esto no existe, es aquí donde recalco que las cosas no eran como antes, el progreso de un jugador, la experiencia y el peso de las decisiones que tomó un jugador que empezó en el 2021 son de poca ayuda para un jugador que esta comenzando este 2025, por eso me gustó la temática de este community engagement challenge porque es una forma de resaltar las malas decisiones que tomó Splinterlands al colapsar la burbuja de los NFT y la desaparición de las cartas fantasmas fue una de ellas. Sin embargo esto en cierta manera se ha corregido creando un nuevo formato: Frontier. Que es un ranking free to play para los nuevos jugadores.
Now, I consider the Frontier format the first step every beginner should take. First, because you'll get your first Archons and monsters for free, just by playing this format. Second, these are cards you can sell on the market, and it would be your first introduction to managing your own assets. Third, there are currently 2 formats for the PvP ranking: wild and modern. The first requires payment at the start of each season, while the second is free and allows you to use Foundations cards as a first step to start in the main game and discover the Core cards used in modern to begin strengthening your deck.
Ahora bien, considero el formato Frontier el primer paso que todo jugador iniciado debería dar, primero porque obtendrás tus primeros arcontes y monstruos gratis, solo por jugar este formato. Segundo son cartas que puedes vender en el mercado y sería tu primera aproximación a la gestión de activos de tu propiedad. Tercero, actualmente existen 2 formatos para el ranking Pvp: wild y moderno, el primero es de pago cada inicio de temporada el segundo es libre de este pago y en el que pueden usarse las cartas Foundations como un primer paso para empezar en el juego principal e ir descubriendo las cartas Core que se usan en moderno para empezar a fortalecer tu mazo.
Archons Foundations/Arcontes Foundations
Of course, as you play Modern, you'll understand the need to buy Core cards from the set corresponding to the Modern format. This is important to understand because it involves your first investment in the game and, in a way, is a statement of intent. You're considering that these Modern cards you buy will eventually be replaced in the Wild format and will, of course, lose their value and some of their usefulness if you plan to stay in Modern. An example of this was my decision to invest in the Chaos Legion card set, where I invested heavily in bringing Archons to Gold League level. This is another controversial point in Splinterlands that I'll elaborate on now.
Por supuesto, a medida que juegues en moderno entenderás la necesidad de comprar cartas Core de la edición correspondientes al formato moderno. Esta parte es importante entenderla porque involucra tus primera inversión dentro del juego y en cierta manera es una declaración de intenciones, es decir, considerando que eventualmente estas cartas modernas que compraras eventualmente pasarán al formato wild y por supuesto perderán su valor y parcialmente su utilidad si piensas quedarte en el formato moderno. Un ejemplo fue mi decisión de invertir en la edición de cartas Chaos Legion donde invertí de forma importante en llevar los arcontes a nivel de la liga de oro y bueno este es otro punto controversial en Splinterlands que pasaré a extender ahora.
During Splinterlands' most chaotic phase, following the end of the NFT bull run and the subsequent price crash, the removal of leagues was, in my opinion, one of the worst decisions they made. This meant you couldn't stay in a league and develop a better understanding of the card upgrade system and the development of new abilities as you leveled up your archon and monsters. The game went from a refined and excellent gameplay mechanic with a fair learning curve to literally forcing you to learn every ability, every ruleset, every race, and every bloodline available to exploit synergies as you faced increasingly powerful opponents, without time to understand the impact and scope of modifiers on rare and legendary archons. In fact, new possibilities are still being discovered in the infamous Rebellion edition, an edition that we can now say is on its way out.
En la fase de mayor locura de Splinterlands al terminar el ciclo alcista de los NFT y con ello la caída de los precios, fue la eliminación de las ligas, una de las peores decisiones que tomaron a mi juicio. Esto significó que no podías quedarte en una liga e ir desarrollando una mejor comprensión del sistema de upgrading de las cartas y el desarrollo de nuevas habilidades conforme aumentabas de nivel tu arconte y monstruos. El juego paso de un refinado y excelente mecánica de gameplay con una curva de aprendizaje justa a literalmente obligarte aprender todas las habilidades, todas las ruleset, todos las razas y los linajes disponibles para aprovechar las sinergias a medida que enfrentas contrincantes más poderosos sin tiempo para entender el impacto y alcance de los modificadores en arcontes raros y legendarios, de hecho todavía se están descubriendo nuevas posibilidades en la infame edición Rebellion, una edición que ya podemos decir que esta de salida.
All of this I've just described is, in short, most of the changes that have left the game in its current state. The big question is, once I have my Foundations cards and my first Conclave Arcana cards, what path should I take? Well, the first thing is, of course, to stay active in Modern ranked battles—we've already discussed that—but the real challenge is overcoming the learning curve. For this, we have the practice option, which doesn't cost any energy, and where we can set up battles to practice and understand the abilities, the Archon mechanics, and also the rulesets. I would say it's an important step if you want to better understand your deck's capabilities and the potential strategies you can develop.
Todo esto que acabo de hablarte es resumidamente la mayoría de los cambios que nos han dejado el juego en el estado actual. La gran pregunta es, una vez con mis cartas Foundations y mis primeras cartas Conclave Arcana ¿Qué camino seguir? bien, lo primero es por supuesto mantenerte activo en las batallas ranking moderno, eso lo hablamos, pero el gran desafío es resolver el tema de la curva de dificultad. Para ello tenemos la opción de prácticas que no nos costará energía y donde podremos configurar batallas para practicar y entender las habilidades, las mecánicas de los arcontes y también de las rulesets. Es diría yo, un paso importante si quieres conocer mejor las posibilidades de tu mazo y las potenciales estrategias que puedas diseñar.
The next thing that will help you improve your game is joining a guild. This is for two reasons: first, it will give you a whole series of benefits, including a bonus percentage for wins in the ranked rankings. And second, guild battles, in addition to rewards in SPs, will give us merits to buy Gladius cases, which contain Gladiator cards that have the unique ability to increase their stats as they eliminate targets. These are cards that will strengthen your deck and you will eventually be able to use them in the modern format if and only if the ruleset that allows their use appears.
El siguiente que te ayudará a mejorar tu juego es conseguir un clan esto es por 2 razones: la primera que te dará toda una serie de beneficios entre ellas un % de bonificación por victorias en el ranking. Y la segunda, las batallas de gremios que además de recompensas en Sps nos darán méritos para comprar Gladius cases que contienen cartas Gladiadoras que tienen la habilidad única de aumentar sus estadísticas a medida de eliminar objetivos. Son cartas que reforzarán tu mazo y eventualmente podrás usarla en el formato moderno si y solo si aparece la ruleset que permite utilizarlas.
Finally, the last step in our learning as Splinterlands summoners is to participate in tournaments. This is highly recommended if you've already made a good investment in Core cards, because it's a way to get a return on your investment in the game in the form of the two main tokens: Dark Energy Crystals (Decs) and Splinterlands Shards (Sps). As you can see, each tournament has specific requirements; some only allow Modern cards, and others allow Wild cards, but the important thing is that the entry requirements are quite accessible. Ultimately, it's like the ultimate test of everything you've learned since you started in Frontier, through practice, and up to Brawls.
Para finalizar el último paso en nuestro aprendizaje como invocadores de Splinterlands es participar de los torneos, esto es ampliamente recomendado si ya has hecho una buena inversión en cartas Core, porque es una manera de obtener un retorno de tu inversión en el juego bajo la forma de los 2 tokens principales: Dark Energy Crystals (Decs) y Splinterlands Shards (Sps). Como puedes ver cada torneo tiene requisitos particulares, algunas solo con cartas modernas y otras wild, pero lo importante es que los requisitos de ingresos son bastante accesibles. En última instancia es como la prueba de fuego de todo lo que hayas aprendido desde que comienzas en Frontier, pasando por practice hasta llegar a las Brawls.
If we had to list the steps to mastery in Splinterlands in 2025-2026, they would be in the following order if you're a new player:

1. Start in Frontier/Inicia en Frontier
2. Play Modern ranked/Jugar ranked modern

These were essentially the steps I followed to get where I am now. In Wild, I reached Champion, but I stopped playing because of the low payouts and the cost of the season pass. So, my efforts are now focused on completing my Foundations cards and gradually acquiring Conclave cards, ignoring the Rebellion set, which is already out. Participating in Brawls has helped me improve my Modern deck, so it's an essential element. In a future post, I'll update all the advantages of joining a guild. Estos fueron en esencia los pasos que seguí para llegar hasta donde estoy ahora, en Wild llego hasta Champion pero deje de jugar por lo poco que se gana alli y el coste del pase de temporada, así que mis esfuerzos se están enfocando en completar mis cartas Foundations y adquirir gradualmente las cartas Conclave ignorando la edición Rebellion que ya esta de salida. La participación en Brawls me ha ayudado a mejorar mi mazo de moderno por lo que es un elemento esencial. En un próximo post actualizaré todas las ventajas de participar en un gremio.
