To Buy or Not to Buy

As of February 8th, 2023, the sale of DEC-B started in-game at Splinterlands. As per this post, the sale will continue for 60 days, till April 09, 2023. During this period players can convert DEC to DEC-B at a 20% discount. Also they can convert Vouchers at a discount. Trouble is at the current market DEC is selling at 27% discount to peg (1000 DEC = $1), so there is no reason to convert in-game. People can just buy DEC and hold at the market until the market price is higher than 1000 DEC = $0.80. So there is no arbitrage opportunity using DEC. However, there is using Voucher, but with a catch! The numbers get confusing quickly because of many tokens and their variable prices, so I made a simple table:

Obviously, these are based on current market prices, which fluctuates, but this gives a simplistic view of the arbitrage opportunity using Vouchers.

So, what is the catch?

Catch are as follows:

  1. Currently DEC-B is not flexible. There is no current use. Even in future, the use of DEC-B will be more limited compared to DEC. It is better to buy and hold DEC, as long as the price is below 80 cents for 1000 DEC. Probably maybe a bit higher if you consider the flexibility.

  2. At current prices of Vouchers, there is an opportunity, but it is unlikely that it is very usuable. As Voucher market is thin, it will be prone to price rally as more Vouchers are purchased from the market.

  3. There is always potential that Voucher prices can drop even further.

That said, I have still bought some vouchers from the market

I have just above 40,000 vouchers, that I can convert to DEC-B. To do that, I have to transfer it to 'in-game' from SPS chain. Let us do that!

Now, I can convert those 40K Vouchers to 8M DEC-B; for better or for worse!

And.....with that, as I click the button!

I have 8M DEC-B!

For the record, I do not like DEC-B. I did vote for that proposal and regretted it. I shouldn't have done that. However, in the end, I am a team player. Since the proposal is passed, I should play my part.

Here you go: This is azircon (the bad guy) playing his part

The Splinterlands

Sort:

Why do they consider you the bad guy? Because you speak your mind? For a person to hold a "Fair amount" of Splinterlands Assets compared to the majority of people, I should think that your voice is important and should be heard, I for one will follow as well as our community. You have come across quite the opposite, and I am truly inspired to continue to help people within the community knowing that there are other people out there with the same moral fiber. Thank you.

It is supposed to be “half-a-joke”. That said there are some people who really consider me as such as I have stopped their abusive behaviors. Also at hive I deal with abuse of reward pool a lot. Basically the concept is that fact it is okay to make money, but not okay to make money by fraud. Since there is no “police” here doesn’t mean you get to do whatever.

So they have me ;)

Well, they should be happy that you care about the eco system!

Here is the main thing stopping me from going hard on DECB. I can earn a yield on DEC but not DECB. Yes I get a 20% bonus but each day that I hold DECB my 20% bonus gets eaten away by opportunity cost.

Absolutely. Why would you? DEC-B doesn't earn yield, and it is not flexible. Noone knows what its future use could be. I only converted vouchers as I had a bunch of them sitting doing nothing and there is a small potential gain possible.

Got some also, thinking that there is some more potential profit, especially as I have some lands, just thinking to use it for the free building boost.

I got some not knowing exactly what to do, but sure will do something

Welllllll I also bought a few dec-b 😂😂 im not sure how I feel about it just yet but we'll see what happens in the future😂

I am not sure either

Trouble is at the current market DEC is selling at 27% discount to peg (1000 DEC = $1), so there is no reason to convert in-game. People can just buy DEC and hold at the market until the market price is higher than 1000 DEC = $0.80. So there is no arbitrage opportunity using DEC.

No. you pay 800 DEC and get 1000 DEC-B , with nothing to do with the price going up and down.
The issue is to convert a highly liquid asset to an illiquid one with very limited usage. I passed it but happy to see Voucher is not getting dumped badly now.

You have difficulty understanding the basics of how markets works.

Currently I can have 1000 DEC for 73 cents. I can just buy and hold if I like. Why do I want to get the locked in price of 80 cents when I can get 73 cents. Sorry but I am not stupid

Currently I can pay 730 DEC and get 1000 DEC in future

!BEER

Hey @azircon, here is a little bit of BEER from @eii for you. Enjoy it!

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

I agree with you analysis - only tested this with converting some voucher however by far not such amounts :-).

Unless you have tens of thousands of vouchers there is no sense to get Dec-b
