Contest Posts
Each week Splinterlands runs three different contest posts. These are essentially prompts to have "community engagement". It used to be various battle posts, now we are doing "support articles". This is a nice way to have community write the help manuals for new players. We also have the social media challenge. Without using my personal words, the goal of these posts is to do the following
Share Your Most Remarkable Splinterlands Moments: Do you possess a battle of epic proportions that deserves to be seen by all? Have you crafted something extraordinary within the Splinterlands realm? Maybe you've got profound thoughts, insights, or strategies related to stats, cards, abilities, or gameplay that are waiting to be shared? We want it all, and we want it to be nothing short of AMAZING!
We can consider this as our effort to get visibility and marketing, as these posts must show activity in the externally facing social media and not hive.
comic book?Third we have the Art Contest. Who can forget the recent @bravetofu
With that background, Splinterlands curators manually read these posts, and votes them as per their merits. If you think about it, this manual curation is a lot of work. Last 6 days, our curators have upvoted 170 posts manually! I want to say a big THANK YOU to all curators!
Intent of this post
The reason I am writing this post is because I want to promote good behavior in the hive blockchain. We like to reward people, but we also want something back.
- We like people to care for this blockchain
- We like people to create good and honest content, that benefits others
- While we do appreciate that people can take some rewards out; we don't want them to be extractors. Meaning, I prefer (notice, that I switched from we to I) that you not sell every single hive that you get
I know this last bit is a sticking point for many. So I wrote a post in August looking at every single hive account within the top 2500. Here is that post. In that post I defined a simple parameter KE as follows
If I divide Author Rewards + Curation Rewards by Held HP, people who held more HP than they earn will have a fraction less than 1.0. Those who held less HP will have a fraction higher than 1.0. This is the Krampus Co-efficient! Or KE.
KE = (Author Rewards + Curation Rewards)/Held HP
KE = 1.0, you hold exactly as you earn (approximately!)
KE > 1.0, you hold less than you earn
KE < 1.0, you hold more than you earn
Since I wrote that post, many of us, @slobberchops in particular, have been thinking about this a lot and trying to fine-tune this number. We felt 1.0 could be a number too harsh. I mean, it is okay to take some rewards out, just not everything. If you do then you are a LEECH in my book. That is not a good thing.
After a lot of thinking I settled for KE=3.0 is a cutoff.
So let us look at those 170 special people who Splinterlands voted over the last 6 days.
This is held hive power, along X-axis plotted against (Author+Curation Rewards/HP), plotted along the Y-axis. Since KE varies a lot, it is plotted in log scale. Higher the account on this plot, more the extraction. More towards the right on this plot, more HP you hold. Notice that above 20K HP there are few accounts, and none are extractors. They are good hivers! Kudos to them, please continue doing what you are doing, many thanks!
A little zoom-in to the cluster. The two horizontal lines are KE=1 and KE=3. If the account is above 3, the person have sold 3X hive than they received.
Do you like to know (obviously you do!) how many accounts have KE > 3.0 within 170?
80
A bit further zoom in to the cluster shows the pattern better.
By the way, I didn't highlight any names. It is random. I must say, I am glad to see the names that I like below the line.
For the people who are above the line I have a few suggestions
- Do better
- Care more
- Start now
That's all that I have.
Many thanks to @slobberchops for extracting the data.
Hey Arzicon,
First off, I want to say I appreciate the effort you and others are putting into discussing and addressing these topics. Over the last few days, I’ve noticed more posts focusing on issues like reward sniping in the 24-hour window and extractors.
When I joined Hive through Splinterlands, I found it challenging to navigate at first, so I think it’s great to shed more light on these topics among the SPL community. Could be as simple as some pinned message on discord with some guides. or link to post like you did in the past about some ethics withing hive. Including the stream with aftersound, IIRC, was great on this topic.
Regarding the list from Slobberchops, I noticed I’ve been labeled as a “leeching arsehole.” I’ll admit I was surprised to see myself on the list and am unsure why I was included. While I don’t see myself as an extractor, I value feedback and would love to understand how I can improve. I’ve spend significant time in writing and engaging with posts about Splinterlands, and while I power down some rewards, it’s always with the intention of reinvesting into SPL.
I don’t take being on the list personally, but I want to grow and learn my reputation/knowledge within the community. If there’s specific feedback or steps I can take to contribute more positively, I’m all ears.
The data from the hive blockchain shows, that the community have 'provided' you with nearly 7000 HP, and you currently hold 1322 HP. You have sold the rest.
How do you define yourself?
You tell me what do you see?
I see I'm above the line 🤣
Always was checking less extracting that rewarding in peakd dashboard
This does not take into account that it still in HBD or back into SPL?
I cannot recall that is have take any value out of the community.
You showed me the wrong plot.
This is the right one.
You hold 694 HBD. At current prices that is 1577 additional hive. That should be added.
If I do that manually your KE becomes 2.43
As per our definition you are NOT a “leeching arsehole.”! :) @slobberchops
Thanks for sharing the numbers you got, I can change on this accordingly with time.... This HBD is intended for Conclave Arcana so till then time to fix somethings 🤣
Today I Learned (TIL) more about the hive community 👍
HBD and Liquid HIVE are not factors in the algorithm, but are assets. My focus was more on HP as that is what 'gives back' to the community. The other two are for bluntly... 'feeding our own faces'...
That is a good explanation, you got it from the 'horses mouth' @beaker007
But if I can explain a bit further; because today I am in the mood :)
and that @beaker007 is called Nash Equilibrium
Sometimes it feels like a hornet's nest, but I asked for it😅.
Hope also others can learn from this discussion.
But get the point to more focus on increasing and keeping it in HP.
KE<3 is very very generous, that means people are powering down and withdrawing 😞
I see your rationale in the comment below about users buying SPL assets, not that what I think matters, but have you done a correlation with SPL assets owned?
Well I do agree.
It is not that I can enforce 1 or 3 :)
I am powerless on how other people vote. I can only control how I vote. The manual votes that I issue is far and few and they never go to people above 1.0.
That said I do follow Curangel and I have no control on how those curators vote and not that I should. Point is following that trail I do vote sometimes a few accounts that I won’t vote. But my personal vote weight is small is those cases, so damage is minimal.
My request to the community is showing the data and let them determine their own plan on actions
correlation with SL assets is possible to do, but it is manual and will take time. Let me see what I can do.
Ha ha, I can share a screenshot of my SPL assets as the footer of each contest entry :)
I like this type of measure, it's very interesting and helps preserve Hive. I just wanted to point out one thing. In my case, I have 16k HP, of which I'm powering down 12k, and I have already withdrawn two installments from a total of 13. My intention is just to ride the Hive's rise and sell them at $1, if it reaches that value, then bring them back and exchange for HBD, keeping it in savings for however long it takes to someday buy back Hive at a price close to $0.20. This is my strategy; whether it will work or not, I don't know, but this Hive will come back here again. I see this as an opportunity to multiply my amount of HP. My question is: Is there anything wrong with this? I would like, if possible, your critical perspective on this.
It is not about right or wrong :) You are free to do whatever you want with your stake. But remember, others who vote you are free to do whatever as well.
Currently, your KE is okay, but if you sell more it will rise to above 3.0, and at which time some of us may choose to not vote your post regardless of its content. This is a criteria some of us are talking about. Mind you hive is decentralized, so we stakeholders can do whatever we choose, as long as it doesn't hurt others.
I understand, and honestly, I really like this way of seeing things. I know I might lose some votes, after all, people can't know that my intention is just to multiply my HP unless I say so. If they look at my transactions from the last month, they'll think I'm just another farmer, haha. But anyway, thank you for your opinion, Azircon, I admire your effort for Hive.
You are welcome
That Slobberchops is a good egg isn't he! :) I've always felt like most of the Splinterlands posts out there are just spam, so I haven't really paid attention to them the way I probably should. People just sharing a battle with little to no commentary is a non starter for me.
Yes, we have been trying to change that for a while. I think we are making progress, but there is a long way to go still.
It's always a work in progress here on Hive for sure! I'll make it a point to give them a second look from now on.
Great charts, really informative!
I am below the KE 1 line at 6k+ HP :)
Yes. I saw your name too. You are at a good spot. Thank you!
Interesting data and food for thought.
I am glad to see that there are authors I already follow and support below the line.
Another interesting data to cross-reference with other data would be to see if those who are above the line have Splinterlands assets and how much they have spent on cards and SPL tokens because an acceptable case might be an account that invests all rewards in Hive on Splinterlands.
Those who are above the line and have no Splinterlands assets are clearly Hive extractors who don't care about Splinterlands and don't care about Hive
Thanks for this post
!discovery 30
@tipu curate 2
I can add that with some effort and then I recommend we think twice before voting them
I hope so, because at the time I bought 600 packs of Splinterlands that were like 1800 dollars xd
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 12/42) Liquid rewards.
I think that's totally right, care more. I mean it makes sense really, even for an extractor. Perhaps more so, if you want to have anything worth extracting from in the future then have a little more respect even and keep a bit in. Power up a little of what you take.
After all. If you are milking a cow you have to feed the fucking thing occasionally! Or it does. 😃
Ha ha. First thing about this process in identification. I am good at making list
In the second chart, that dot between @yameen and @bltizz, that should be me! 🤣 What a cute little blue dot I am!
At first I thougt that KE = 3 felt almost too kind, but when it comes to Splinterlands posts I guess that it should be expected that some people might use their funds to buy SPL assets, and that's fine, if they also build a bit their HP - even at a slower pace. So, after a second taught, I got why you chose to raise the KE up to 3...
... and in fact it turned out to be still low enough to identify almost half of those account as potential extractors.
I looked again. Yes, it is a lonely part of the plots.
Good guys are lonely I guess :)
Ahahah thanks for the zoom-in!
In italian we have a saying which states "better alone than in bad company"!
Yes. It is too kind, but for that exact reason you mentioned. Again we want to help people not bash them
@brataka, I'm not going to call you out (actually I am), but my script shows you are extreme. What do you think this is.. a fucking milking machine?
Don't think this goes unnoticed, there's a lot of data and statistic collection goes on. I would not expect any more support but that's down to the @splinterlands community.
Nice one with the data again @azircon, I don't know what you are using, it picks out names at random? Maybe @brataka is not the worst... I hope he is and there's not more of them.
It picks out names based on anti-clustering of points and placement density of names. It's a GIS function. But I can choose any name and manually override!
noblebright is worse but it's a relatively new account and got tiny amounts of net rewards, but the account sells it all. So inadvertently it worked I think.
I would say brataka is worst. Since I follow curangel even I voted. That's the sad part.
You know what they say, if you don't like something.. do something about it!
There are other options.
Yes, I know. But I do like Curangel. I like the cause and the people. I don’t expect every single upvote from them would be perfect.
Lightcaptured is a far worst leech!
o: well I don't know bro, I make fan art every time my job allows me but well, not to mention that I'm publishing at most one post per week I think
Interesting data. I'd like to add more HP this year to have at least 5k.
You are at a good spot though. You are below the line!
Dang, I wish I saw my name on these charts. I don't usually submit my daily battle of the day articles to the competition, but I do focus on some fun battle strategies every day. I wonder what I'm missing for more of a following on Hive?
I'm really getting after it in 2025 with Splinterland BOTDs and Actifit leaderboards. I bust my butt in my classroom and stay up on that step count. My daily reports are more of a personal Brooklyn journal than just an activity report.
My seasonal report cards and brawl reports still appear in our Kingdom of Glory Hive community page Hive-178250 for those in the guild who want to keep track of those $SPS numbers!
You don't participate in contests :)
Not that it is important, Just saying that this is a small window of 6 days, where your content was not voted. So your name is not there.
I checked your KE. It is 1.38.
Okay, so I will do a better job of linking my content in those contests then when they fit the description as I keep on with my BOTD series. I'm also posting on PeakD's "Snaps" more as well as my verified X account. I didn't get much traction with inLeo since I'm a peakD user. I also have a Duce account on Instagram, but I haven't seen much of anything Splinterlands on IG.
Its nice to see myself in your post Azircon
Im not sure exactly what it means. I will have to reread everything again but its nice to be out there haha.
It means you kept most of your hive earnings invested in hive. That is a good behavior
Oh, cool. Yeah I reread it and understood it better.
Yep, all earnings are either in hive or hbd.
I wish I had converted them all to hive though 😂
This is a great initiative. It's good to encourage people to think about the system a little more than themselves sometimes.
I am trying my best, not sure how sufficient the impact will be.
Yeah you never know, but at the very least you plant seeds.
I wonder, of those who are primarily extractors on hive, what percentage of them are primarily extractors on splinterlands as well.
It is probably 1:1 at below 500HP level
size of the circle = Author reward
that matters
not only the position is high on the y-axis, that's bad. But it is even worse, if your circle size is huge like brataka.
add to that the age of the account, and you have gotten some of the worst extractors
I am still in 5k HP
On my way to 10k HP maybe in 2 years i will ge there
You are at a good spot. Below the line with KE =1.77
that nice, my plan is holding HP so i can curating and giving people something from me, hopefully i can go there in next 2 month
I see my name below the line @azircon . Is it still safe if I sell my HBD that I got from posting rewards? I've never had a power down while I've been on Hive.
Very interesting and motivating post, thanks for posting this kind of content, I started posting splinterlands again this week, I was actually kind of "absent" from the hive after being very overloaded with work, how can I find this data to check how my KE is doing?
https://hivebuzz.me/ranking
type kaibagt in the box
Your HP = 5510
You Author + Curation rewards = 6239
You KE therefore = 6239/5510 = 1.13
Thanks for the answer! In this case, the lower the number, the better, right? I was in doubt because I thought it was only taking into account the Splinter posts, I intend to keep my two weekly Splinterlands posts and, God willing, the game will continue to grow and evolve! The tutorial initiative helps a lot! I'm even looking for ways to add more Brazilians to the game, I'll probably launch a weekly streaming.
Yes, a lower KE number is one good matrix of your hive etiquette.
Such a great initiative! 👏 It's awesome to see how much effort you put into fostering creativity and uplifting the #Splinterlands community. These contests really highlight the talent here and bring us closer as a Hive family. 🙌 Together we will ride the bull #Vonak $PIMP
I recently looked into your hive posts, and they are good.
Wow! That encourages me to keep it up! I did not expected that I would enjoy more writing than playing a game! But Splinterlands can surprise you in infinite ways! #Vonak
Oh wow. This is cool. NOW I see where this came from. And I'm on the chart! 💪 Nice article. I like to see analytics like this.
Yes, you are, at a good spot in the chart too and I was appreciating your effort.
I like the community engagement challenge a lot better than just submit a battle by template every week, who better can make the manuals than the players who play the game every day 😀
Since I listened to your podcast about hive etiquette (I think it was TPG) a lot has changed and I am now at 1200 HP and rising 🤩pretty cool, not nearly there yet but it's a work in progress, so thanks for opening my eyes.
Keep the investor mindset and you will be okay.
"Notice that above 20K HP there are few accounts, and none are extractors. They are good hivers! Kudos to them, please continue doing what you are doing, many thanks!"
We need more of this.

As my first entry to crypto, did not knew anything about hive so have done quite a lot of power down when I just started on Hive as I though of it as just a means of helping me buy SPL assets and holding HBD gives better apr. But as I learn more, I stopped powering down and been trying to grow my HP organically and by powering at least 1 Hive everyday for the past few months.
Your KE = 4.34.
Meaning, you have taken out about 4X than you have got. So, if you take my suggestion:
Do better
Care more
Start now
You can see yourself above the line.
Thanks for the suggestion. Will take long time to reach my all time rewards but will use this year to increase my HP through posting and a series of small power ups.
I am glad we are moving forward as a community. Slowly building my splinterlands assets from scratch. I hope to be a productive member of the community as well though in a turtle's pace at the moment. Vonak !BBH
I have been away for a few months for personal reasons and I got to say this was a great post to check out for just coming back. When I first started playing in 2021 I posted a lot on here then my desktop broke and still is broken so posting form my laptop doesnt let me use canva and the images I used to use so I have not been posting. But I am forever greatfull for the ability to post and earn on Hive. Because of curation I was able to buy a max copy of Quix The Devious who was very expensive at the time. And I also later in 2024 was able to use my rewards to buy my very own Lux Vega. Without this platform I would not have been able to do those two things. Other then that I have always just powered up my Hive or staked my HBD

Can you please help to check my position in the chart?
Unless I'm mistaken it seems as your model doesn't take into account that some of that HIVE likely got spent on Splinterland assets and other Hive Blockchain assets as well. Meaning the HIVE and therefore the value of that HIVE did not leave the chain at the expense of the person that traded. For me such trading of HIVE should be encourage not discourage as it helps the apps built here succeed which in turn helps the Hive Blockchain which benefits everyone. Like one big circle of mutual benefits. Edit: after reading some of the comments I see the trending one is a perfect example of those who might have slipped between the cracks of the displayed system in the OP.
Technicalities:
I will rephrase to the below
The model you chose to showcase and is displayed in your OP and also seem to lend support to.
(3) That might be true but the vocal point of the model is value taken from the blockchain (traded Hive). My counterpoint is traded Hive that goes towards apps or a business on HIVE is not value extracted but value shifted within the Blockchain. This should be encourage as it promotes the blockchains self sustainability/ helps grow the blockchains apps which in turn grows the chain as a whole which benefits everyone.
My point is, most of the “extractors” doesn’t have any SL assets either. They have sold them too.
That data can be collated but will take time. I have manually spot checked many accounts.
One example
https://peakmonsters.com/@brataka/cards
No where in your OP does it state anything about held Splinterland assets being part of your equation. You are free to bring that point up now and you just did but I can't factor it into my response before the point is made. I would agree that such people could fall under the extractors definition dependent on where that traded away value went. I haven't checked the account you shared above but I'll take your word for it. But just as you found someone who might highlight the displayed system in your OP works there are others that (as I see it) get unfairly categorized (A) those who shift value on the chain vs. (B) those who remove value from the chain. I know you are likely a busy person so thank you for taking the time to respond. There isn't much else I can add here so I will have to bow out of the conversation.
The equation in your OP:
If I divide Author Rewards + Curation Rewards by Held HP, people who held more HP than they earn will have a fraction less than 1.0. Those who held less HP will have a fraction higher than 1.0. This is the Krampus Co-efficient! Or KE. KE = (Author Rewards + Curation Rewards)/Held HP KE = 1.0, you hold exactly as you earn (approximately!) KE > 1.0, you hold less than you earn KE < 1.0, you hold more than you earn
The description and explanation that is described in the post is accurate.
And yes, personally as a hive stakeholder I may or may not care how much Splinterlands assets any individuals holds.
Hi, I hope I'm not a leech extractor, nice post my friend.👍👍👍
