Splinterlands is a blockchain-based trading card game that requires skill, strategy, and a little bit of luck to succeed. That being said, success in Splinterlands starts well before the actual match begins. Succeeding in Splinterlands requires dedication and knowing how to build a powerful deck that can compete in a variety of different rule sets. One of the things that I like most about Splinterlands is that there are many ways to rise through the ranks and become a more formidable player. In today's post, I'd like to take a step back from my traditional focus on strategic game play and analyze my overarching path to power in the game.

There Are Many Paths to Power
Before I jump in and start describing my personal path to power, I want to point out that there are a lot of different ways to increase the power of your deck and grow in Splinterlands. Some people primarily focus on land and accruing resources. Other people have a lot of external funds and are able to come into the game and buy extremely powerful cards right off the bat. Then other players, such as myself, tend to make more modest investments in the game and slowly build their collection up over time. Although I will be discussing my personal path to power in this article, I want to point out that there are lots of ways of achieving the same goal. It's important for everyone to pick the strategy that aligns with their budget, their mindset, and their personal style.

The Journey Begins
Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact date, but I originally got into Splinterlands sometime around 2018 or 2019. I was in college full time, and I was trying to make a little bit of extra money by doing cryptocurrency blogging. As I was doing my cryptocurrency blogs, I kept reading articles about this game called Splinterlands. The artwork looked pretty neat, and although I didn't understand all of the details, I did understand that it was built on blockchain technology. I thought it was pretty interesting, so I decided to give it a go, jump into the game, and start playing.

It Was a Slow Start
When I first started playing the game, I was very nervous to put any money into the project. I heard of so many different online scams, and I wanted to make sure I was protecting myself. So, I just started with a very basic summoner's spellbook, and started playing a few matches. At first I was just playing my matches and completing my daily quests. I was earning a little bit of DEC and additional NFT reward cards for playing, but it wasn't anything earth shattering. I just thought it was fun and enjoyable, and it was nice being able to earn a little bit of rewards. Then, I discovered the Splinterlands Share Your Battle challenges, where every so often, the team would encourage us to complete a match using a specific card from the game. This was an absolute game changer because it showed me that Splinterlands can provide rewards that extend beyond just the game itself.

I Took a Break
Sometime in 2021 I started working at a traditional finance job that required me not to be involved as much with any cryptocurrency projects, so I stopped doing as many share your battle challenges and I kind of took a step back from the game. Although this was necessary for the job, I still feel like I missed out on some great opportunities in the game during my time away.
The Current Strategy
A couple months ago, I decided to get back into Splinterlands, and it has been such a breath of fresh air. The team has been doing so many incredible things such as the campaign mode and frontier mode. I really enjoy playing the game again. I'm definitely not the most powerful player in the game, but I learned two strategies that I think could be very beneficial for anyone looking to start on their own path to power in Splinterlands.
- My first strategy is to recognize that Splinterlands is more than just a game. It is a community and it is an ecosystem. Participating in the weekly social media posts and interacting with the community can be a great way to enhance your in-game experience. In the case of the social media challenges, I like writing the blogs and then using the post rewards rewards to level up my collection in the game.
- The second strategy that I think is very important to remember is that consistency matters. The reward structure in the game has changed a lot over time, and for a while I was a little bit disappointed that the majority of the cards were soulbound and that we weren't earning DEC rewards anymore. Looking back, I wish I would have remained more involved in the game because those rewards were still valuable, and it is difficult to go back in time and collect the rewards that I missed out on.
Conclusion
Everyone takes a different path in Splinterlands. As this post has indicated, I've followed a little bit of a winding journey. At some points I was really excited about Splinterlands and spent a lot of energy in the game. At other times, I was a little bit more distant. That being said, the great thing is that Splinterlands is that it is a blockchain based game where my assets live in my Hive account. When I took a break from the game, I still owned all my cards when I came back. If I decide to quit the game completely at some point (not likely), I can sell my assets and hopefully get back a portion of what I put into the game. Yes, Splinterlands is fun and exciting, but more than that, it is a game that allows players to truly own their assets, and I think that is an incredibly powerful concept.
