Splinterlands Winterfest Gift Box Opening!!🎁

Hey everyone! In today's post, I wanted to share my recent experience opening a Splinterlands Winterfest Gift Box. I'll put the bottom line up front. I thought the gift box was a really good value that provided a lot of different in-game items for a reasonable price. Additionally, I thought the gift boxes were a great way to connect Splinterlands to the "real world" and give players something to be excited about.

Everyone's Opinion Will Differ

The first thing I want to point out is that gift boxes typically have a wide range of items, and everyone will have a different opinion on what items they think are the most valuable. Some people might prefer to collect the cosmetics, whereas other people are going to focus on the items that actually help in the game, such as the starter packs or the energy.

Was The Gift Box Worth It?

I don't spend a lot of money on gaming, and if I am going to make a purchase, I tend to think about it for a long time to make sure I'm getting a good value. When I saw that Splinterlands was going to be offering the Winterfest gift boxes, my first thought was to evaluate whether the contents that I was getting would be worth the price. Obviously, everyone is going to have a different assessment of the value, but as I was looking at the value of these boxes, I thought it was a pretty good deal.

I ended up purchasing the Fine gift, which came with

  • 500 credits
  • 10,000 glint
  • 5 energy
  • 20 entry draws
  • 3 Conclave Arcana starter packs
  • 2 Winter skins
  • 1 of the Mags token

My strategy for determining whether or not the gift box was worth it was to evaluate the value of the individual components and add them together to see whether or not I was getting a good deal.

Assessing The Value

The 500 credits are valued at 50 cents. The three Conclave Arcana starter packs are valued at a dollar each. Note that I'm using the credits price and not the adjusted DEC price, which is currently under peg value. So, between the credits and the Conclave Arcana starter packs, I was getting about $3.50 in value. That meant that I was spending $1.50 for 10,000 glint, 5 energy, 20 entry draws, 2 winter skins, and the Mags token.

Obviously, some of these things don't have an objective value and some of them aren't valuable for me. I don't participate in the Fortune draws, so the 20 Fortune entries were pretty much worthless. That being said, I reasoned that $1.50 for 10,000 glint, 5 energy, and the skins and Mags token was more than worth it.

Opening The Box

As you can see from this screenshot, prior to opening my box, I was completely out of energy. And on top of that, the end of the season was coming up pretty quickly.

So, as soon as I opened the box, I pretty much used all of the additional energy right away.

I also decided to open up the Conclave Arcana starter packs and to spend the glint immediately on some reward cards.

Obviously, I have absolutely no idea what the future skins will be, but I'm hoping they will be something interesting and exciting.

Why Winterfest/Harvestfest/etc Are Good For The Game

I've been playing Splinterlands on and off for a long time, and although I've always enjoyed the game itself, I have to be honest that things felt a bit monotonous back in the day. Sure, there were daily quests and town halls with occasional updates to the game, but each Splinterlands season felt just like the Splinterlands season before it.

Nowadays, things are MUCH different, and I like the changes. The Winterfest and Harvestfest from several moths ago helped me feel much more connected to the game. The seasonal cosmetics and rulesets helped me feel like Splinterlands was connected to the real world. Knowing that some of the items would only be available for a limited time encouraged me to log in consistently and play as much as possible so I could collect the unique items before they were gone for good. Over the long run, I think this is a great thing for the game. We want players to be excited to get unique items.

Additional Thoughts

Before I close out this post, I'd like to make two additional comments.

  • The first is that I would like to thank the team for providing a relatively affordable entry point for budget players to participate in this Winterfest. Its rough to love a game but being priced out of participating in the special events because they're too expensive. I thought the $5 gift box was a great value. That allowed me to participate without spending a ton of money in the game.

  • Secondly, I think that we really need Mags and Vin in the game. We've all seen the incredible video content featuring these characters, and they're great ambassadors for the game.
