Today is June 24th and in many regions of our country people are celebrating the birth of Saint John the Baptist... I have to admit that I don't know much about the origin and details of this celebration so I'll leave you THIS LINK for you can have more information about it... But one thing I am sure is that this is an ideal day to do "street photography" here in my village Montalbán... So as soon as I heard the drums beating in the distance this morning, I grabbed my camera and took to the streets in search of "Los cantores de San Juan" which is what everyone calls the groups of people who organise and lead the activities during this celebration... So let's to see the pictures! ;)

Hoy es 24 de Junio y en muchas regiones de nuestro país las personas celebran el nacimiento de San Juan el Bautista... Tengo que reconocer que no sé mucho acerca del origen de esta celebración así que os dejaré ESTE ENLACE para que puedan tener más información al respecto... Pero algo de lo cual si estoy seguro es que este es un día ideal para hace "fotografía callejera" aquí en mi pueblo Montalbán... Así que apenas escuchar los tambores sonar a lo lejos hoy en la mañana, tomé mi cámara y salí a las calles en búsqueda de "Los cantores de San Juan" que es como todos llaman a los grupos de personas que organizan y encabezan las actividades durante esta celebración... ¡Así que vamos a por esas fotos! ;)

Cultural associations, schools, local government entities, and neighbourhood groups organise themselves to define and prepare what is needed for this celebration. But the truth is that anyone can (and indeed does) join the group at any time of the day and participate in the activities to commemorate the birth of St. John the Baptist... People in many houses prepare altars for the dancers and musicians who go in procession from early in the morning, arrive there and make stops where they sing, carry out some rituals inherent to the celebration, and distribute food, sweets, liquor, coffee and chocolate to drink... If you are willing to spend the whole day following the route, you will certainly have to be careful not to eat and drink too much! ;)

Asociaciones culturales, escuelas, entes del gobierno local, y grupos de vecinos se organizan para definir y preparar lo necesario para esta celebración. Pero lo cierto es que cualquiera puede unirse al grupo (cosa la cual sucede) durante cualquier momento del día y participar en las actividades para conmemorar el nacimiento de San Juan Bautista... Las personas en muchas casas acostumbran a preparar altares para que los danzantes y músicos que van en procesión desde tempranas horas de la mañana, lleguen hasta allí y hagan paradas en donde cantan, llevan a cabos algunos rituales inherentes a la celebración y por lo generan se distribuyen entre las personas comidas, dulces, licor, café y chocolate para beber... ¡Sí usted está dispuesto a pasar todo el día siguiendo el recorrido, de seguro tendrá que cuidarse d no comer y beber demasiado! ;)

These photos are taken early in the morning (around 8:00 AM) but many of these people have been celebrating since the night before, so many are lively due to the consumption of spirituous beverages and it is quite common that in certain streets couples dance wildly... The music is based on the percussion of drums and hollowed out trunks, all of which is accompanied by songs allegorical to the devotion of the people to the Saint whose birth they are celebrating... For me, being so interested in street photography, this is a marvellous opportunity to capture the human essence of Montalbán...

Estas fotos fueron hechas hoy temprano en la mañana (dese las 8:00 AM aproximadamente) pero muchas de estas personas han estado celebrando desde la noche anterior, así que muchos están alegres debido al consumo de bebidas espirituosas y es bastante común que en ciertas calles las parejas bailen de manera desenfrenada... La música se basa en percusión de tambores de distintas y troncos ahuecados, todo lo cual se acompaña con canciones alegóricas a la devoción de las personas por el Santo cuyo nacimiento se celebra... Para mi, gustándome tanto hacer fotografía callejera, esta es una oportunidad maravillosa de captar la esencia humana de Montalbán...

In this kind of celebrations the social barriers disappear completely and the population becomes a kind of "melting" where people from all social layers go from one altar to another, from one street to another, singing, dancing, sharing drinks and food among them... This is a town which has suffered a severe exodus of people due to the depressed economy. However, during days like this, many people return from other places to celebrate with family and friends who have stayed behind...

Durante este tipo de celebraciones desaparecen totalmente las barreras sociales y la población se convierte en una especie de "amalgama" en donde personas de todo estrato social van de un altar al otro, de una calle a otra, cantando, bailando, compartiendo bebidas y comidas entre ellos... Este es un pueblo el cual ha sufrido un severo éxodo de pobladores debido a su economía deprimida. Sin embargo, durante días como este, muchos regresan de otros lugares para celebrar con sus familiares y amigos quienes se quedaron viviendo aquí...

It is a celebration where the artistic, the cultural, the social, the religious and the pagan are mixed... In each house where an altar is placed, small rituals are performed by the leaders of the organising groups where images of baptisms with water are replicated for some of the devotees whose presence there has a more spiritual context than that of others whose main motive has been the festive celebration itself... All this combines to provide me with a lot of valuable photos for me, as they portray to a large extent the psyche of the people who inhabit my town...

Es una celebración en donde se mezcla lo artístico, lo cultural, lo social, lo religioso y lo pagano... En cada casa en donde se coloca un altar, se realizan pequeños rituales por parte de los cabecillas de los grupos organizadores en donde se replican imágenes de bautizos con agua a algunos de los devotos cuya presencia allí tiene un contexto más espiritual que el de otros cuyo principal móvil ha sido el de la celebración festiva en si misma... Todo esto se conjuga para brindarme un montón de fotos valiosas para mi, pues retratan en gran medida la psiquis de las personas que habitan mi pueblo...
