What I Learned Today - Welcome!

Welcome to the What I Learned Today community! This is a community that celebrates the learning that we do every day and the knowledge that we have gained, also every day.

Learning isn't just for children or students. As we grow, and continue to grow, and live, we have new experiences, read new things, do new things, often without even realising it. Do you remember finally figuring out how to cut and paste using keyboard shortcuts and the time it helped you save? You learned something!

We learn things literally every day. Every day. How? Take these examples:

• You picked up a new hobby and learned the names of the tools used for it..
• You read a history book and learned all manner of new information.
• You went to work. While there you learned to write a python script to connect to a database.
• You relaxed at home and watched some tv. The sitcom you were watching references a song you know by name and artist, and now you know who sings it.
• And the list goes on. Talking to people. Listening to the radio. Engaging in any form of activity will teach you new skills or enhance your knowledge to continue to help you grow as a person.

The things we learn might be "big" or they might be "small" or they might even be "aha" moments. Earlier this week, for instance, I started reading a book entitled What If that discusses important forks in human history and what might have been if seemingly small occurrences had been different. While reading this book I had the "aha" moment that it was the ancient Greek's who first used the words "freedom" and "citizen." Before them there were no words for those concepts, because there were no societies that had those concepts! Those ancient Greek city-states were democracies in almost the truest sense of the word and made all key decisions by vote. This explains, to me, why they had such a difficult time forming a defense against their Persian invaders; they could not get a counter-decision quickly out of committee! Their burgeoning sense of freedom and democracy was nearly their undoing. Some things never change.

What is good to share in this community? Things you have learned. Anything. A keyboard shortcut. A mathematical equation. The rule of thirds. The second Prime Minister of Canada. Anything at all. Share with us what you learned, how or why you learned it, how it is helping you as a person, or just why you find it interesting or fascinating.

This community is all about the things you have learned and those aha moments you have enjoyed. Let's grow together. Let's learn together.
