The Catla fish (Catla catla), also known simply as "Catla" or "Bhakur" in some regions, is a popular freshwater fish species in South Asia. It belongs to the carp family, Cyprinidae, and is widely cultivated in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other countries in the region. The Catla fish has a deep body, broad head, and a prominent, curved mouth. Its scales are large and silvery. Catla is a fast-growing fish that can reach impressive sizes. Mature Catlas can weigh up to 20 kg (44 lbs) or more. They are omnivores but primarily feed on phytoplankton and detritus. Catla thrives in freshwater rivers, lakes, and ponds, particularly in subtropical and tropical regions. Catla is highly prized in South Asian cuisine. Its flesh is tender and flavorful, making it suitable for various dishes, including curries, fries, and fish stews. Catla is one of the most commonly farmed fish species in South Asia due to its popularity and relatively high market demand. It is often grown with other carp species in polyculture systems, contributing significantly to the aquaculture economy in the region.
