Crafting Custom Palm Sandals: A Step-by-Step Guide

in Hive Diy11 months ago

Good day, hive friends. It's a wonderful day, and I hope you're making the most of it. Today I've come again to grace your sight with another masterpiece I just made. This is a palm sandal I made just recently for a hive friend, and I decided to share the procedure of how I made it here on hive. I do hope you'll love to see this and possibly learn a thing or two about making footwear going forward.

Like I said, this is a pair of palm sandals I made for a hive friend who reached out to me to help craft something for her, and immediately I got the samples. I set out to work by first visiting the shoe materials store to purchase all I'd need, and thereafter I began making these slippers. This isn't actually the first time I'm making footwear for this fellow hive, and I guess the history of good results we had the last time was what inspired the order for more, so without further ado, let's get to the making proper.

Materials needed:

  • Black leather
  • Brown leather lining
  • Punch tool
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Biro
  • Gum
  • Super glue
  • Maco insole
  • polyurethane outsole
  • Brush

Designing the straps

To Make the straps of this palm sandals, I first had to create a dummy of it with a paper so I can get the perfect shape and once that as been done by using the scissors to cut the paper and joining the from strap, and I noticed it was perfect, I replicated the same thing on the black leather material, using my biro to draw our the shape as I traces the same from the dummy paper, after this is use the scissors to cut it and then place it on another leather so i can cut the strap for the other foot.

Joining the straps to a lining:

For this I picked up the brown leather lining, apply some gum on it inner part with my brush, then I let it dry for some minutes, after that I placed the straps on the brown leather where gums has been applied, I make sure it's straight and has joined perfectly, before using the scissors to cut out the same shape again, and this lining makes the palm sandal straps more firm and quality.

Making the insole and outsole

To make the insole, firstly I picked the brown leather lining, drew out the shape of her leg size, as a extra inches for folding and then I cut that out with my scissors, after this I cut our same foot shape out of the maco material, then I use the brush to apply gum on the inner part of the brown leather lining, let it dry and place the maco on it, after that, I folded the extra inch on the maco and make sure it's firm and neat, as the outsole is polyurethane, that's means it's readymade and i won't have to craft it again.

Lasing (joining) the straps with the insole

To last the straps to the insole, first I use the punch tool, to too a hole in the front part of the insole, then I put the straps from part through it, after this I applied gum on the edge of the strap and the edge of the inner part of the insole, so I can join them well.

Lasing(joining) the insole with the outsole/finishing touch.

To last the insole and the outsole together, I had to use the sandpaper to scrub the inner part of both, then I use the brush to apply gum on those inner part, let them dry for few minutes, and then place both on each other, before it's sealed finally, I usually put super glue on all the corner of the insole, so it'll stick together perfectly and that's what brings us to the end of making this palm sandal.

And that's what brings me to the end of how I made this palm sandals, I hope you had a good read and hopefully learn something, well I haven't send it to the hiver who ordered for it, as she's based in Europe while I'm here in Nigeria, but all do that pretty soon.

Thanks so much for your time, and have a good day.

All photos are mine.
