Recently I attended a workshop to make my own copper miniature Concorde. I've never done any metal work before and was really looking forward to it. Working gloves, google and ear muffs were provided for our safey. As was a piece of round copper to make the Concorde. I thought the googles and ear muffs were a bit over kill.
Then I saw all the tools, hammers, pliers, saw and files, it's all heavy duty stuff. Maybe the googles and ear muffs aren't that overkill after all.
This was a tutor led session, I put my googles on as instructed, but I didn't bother with the ear muffs. First of all, we were instructed to fold the copper piece in half in the vice, and hammer it closely together. Then slot the spine firmly into the vice, and wedge open the two sides with a screw driver to make the wings. Next, we had to hammer the sides flats. Imagine the sound of five people hammering like mad inside a small room, it was absolutely defeaning!! And that's when I realised the ear muffs are required!!! The hammering was fun, great to relief pressure, but boy, I was sweating so much from the hard work!
After all the bashing around, next we had to saw the wing shape. Trying to saw a tiny piece of copper was quite tricky, especially during the first few times when the saw keeps slipping away. Once I got a grove is was much easier, I just had to make sure to follow the template line I drew to keep the wing shape. It took me a while, but I got there in the end. Ignoring the fact that the two wings aren't symmetric, I think individually they look ok...
Next stage was to file them down so the two wings are symmetric. The vice was really helpful to hold the small item allowing me to use both hands to file the wing in shape. The only problem is that I can't see the other wing and I kept filing off too much,
In the end I had to hand hold my Concorde to avoid me filing off all the wings, and slowly file the final touches.
Ready to see the final product? Here's my Concorde 🙃......
and here is what it's supposed to look like 😂
and here is the real Concorde which I shall show you in my next post about my visit to the Aerospace museum.
The miniature you made looks exactly the same as the real thing hahaha. I look forward to seeing the real Concorde in your next post.
🤔
Oi!!!
hahaha ^^

So interesting! A unique idea. I think you did really well, thanks for sharing
Thanks, it was fun making it
I bet. And it would of been awesome to see the real thing up close too!
That will be coming
Wow, so cool to do some metal work @livinguktaiwan 😊😎
You did well for a first time!
I do see the shape in it 😉🤓
Have a great Tuesday 👋🏻
I really enjoyed the session and to try something that I've never done before, just wished I'd done a better job of it
As long as you really enjoyed it, that’s the key. Trying something new… having fun 🤩
You have the shapes. So you did a great job 😎
Next time you can try something else. Are you planning on some more metal work?
Would be cool…
I actually saw the thumbnail and thought you'd stuck a Twix to a chocolate mint leaf!
There is something so satisfying about using tools and your hands to make stuff. Well done.
Looking forward to the Concorde post now :-)
🤣🤣
Honestly, after all that hammering and filing, I think it looks a bit like a chocolate bar as well. But since I handmade it, I'm really chuffed with it. Gonna put it on some magnet so I can stick it on my fridge 🙂
That's such a funny project 😂
It looks fun though and yours didn't turn out too bad. I'd like to see what the instructors looked like. I think it would be very hard to make a realistic looking place out of a piece of copper like that.
Damn! I forgot to take a photos of the ones they made previously. They were all different but looked a lot more like a Concorde, or even an aeroplane compared to mine. I spent so much time on the wings that I didn't have enough time to do the nose and tail that's why it looks half finished.
I understand. It looks like a hard project
That is pretty cool. I am actually surprised they decided to use copper. Seems like an expensive medium to use with beginners. That is cool you got to see the Concorde. I got to see it once when it was in New York. They had it just outside the Intrepid museum.
I think they said copper was easier for beginners to handle and maybe cause it was just a very small piece so it was ok. But given the workshop was free, it was really cool.
Seeing the Concorde up close and personal was really cool and I even went on board, can't wait to post that!!
I'm looking forward to seeing that. That makes sense about copper. I guess in that small of quantity, it isn't that big of a deal.
really nice for a first try :) Can’t wait to see the next improvement !
Unfortunately it's just a one off workshop, but I'd love to do it again, I'm sure it will look a lot more like a plan.
Damn... but that gives you time to design it in your mind, without constraint... and maybe in another material (?) Even if I recognize that in copper, it is very classy !
Enjoy your evening :)
You are surprising me. At first glance, from the thumb nail I thought it's crocheted.
Look at you, playing with heavy tools 😃
A woman's gotta be tough sometimes!!!!
You did great on your first try, but comparing the expectation vs reality got me cracking 🤣. Can't wait to see the real Concorde
Well, expectations and realities are always a long way off. Yeah, keep a look out for the real thing, it's mega cool
I can tell it will be super cool
I'll sure be looking up for the update
I can definitely see some similarities. But they say I have a very strong imagination :D
Anyway, kudos to you for even trying, I have never crafted anything out of metal so I´m impressed :)
You're are so kind @phortun 😃
It was great fun to do this, something totally new for me, and I'm so glad I tried it.
Good job - and to be fair making a concorde for your first attempt is impressive ! How well does it fly ?!
It's still learning... 😅
It is a good result for beginner, to work with metal is hard and to make such small object is also not very east. But you managed very well and of course, as here in UK we say, safety first :)
It was quite an experience, everything was a first time for me, but thoroughly enjoyed it

I think you did a good job of it. Copper and aluminium are not the easiest metals to saw, did they give you beeswax to lubricate the saw?
Glad you realised that the safety stuff was there for a reason, I worked in a factory once and you simply have to wear ear muffs or you'll go deaf really fast.
I really like the look you got at the end, the kind of rough look, it gives it a lot of character.
They didn't, we just went straight in. Wouldn't the lubricant make the saw more slippery coz I struggled a little at the beginning to saw a grove
Once I put in the ear muffs it was actually very soothing like your within an environment but not there. But it was awfully hot being wrapped in googles and ear muffs and gloves and long sleeves, I was sweating down the back of my neck!!
A workshop to do metal work?! That's so interesting!
So this must be your first output.
It looks awesome for a start~ It's so small! I mean it's cute. 😅 It would be a good keychain.
I want to stick it on some magnetic so it can go on the fridge and I can admire me creation all the time 😂
The fridge is a good idea! You gotta look for some magnets then 😂
With carvings would be great, like carving the date when you made it 😅
Pretty cool! I'm not sure about the aerodynamics though x)
Hello stranger!! How are you doing? Will I see you at HF this weekend? 😉
Hey! Sadly no, I was actually in Europe until a few days ago, but I had to come back to Taiwan for a very important event on 22nd. Actually without the damn quarantine I could have made it to both =p
Anyways, I know you guys will have a lot of fun, take a lot of pictures ;)
What a bummer! So near yet so far!!!
Are you back in Tainan now? I'm hoping to pop back again soon
Yeah, I'll actually go back and forth between Tainan and Taipei in the coming months, send me a message anytime ;)
That looks like a really cool day out, I always think about doing some creative course like this around art, sculpture etc, but never get around to it! Some day!! Well done on the little copper concorde, very dinky and cute!
