Digital drawing - Freedom in the Dunes of Coro [Esp-Eng]

Hace poquito conocí uno de los lugares más impresionantes que he conocido en mi vida, un lugar que más allá de ser bonito para mí fue imponente y hasta artístico, porque parecía que se trataba de una enorme pintura en la que se usaron los colores correctos. Los Médanos de Coro cambiaron mi perspectiva de lo que es un lugar bonito, y la verdad fui muy feliz al conocerlo.

​Como les conté antes, esta visita a este lugar fue limitada por el tiempo; debíamos venirnos a casa no tan tarde porque, si no, llegaríamos muy de noche. Así que estuvimos solo un rato y además no pudimos hacer demasiado para no devolvernos repletos de arena por todas partes. Así que nos limitamos a correr y caminar sobre la arena mientras veíamos el horizonte.

​Aquella fue una gran experiencia pese a que no pude lanzarme por la arena o incluso acostarme, que honestamente fue algo que quise hacer apenas vi el lugar. Quedó ahí guardadito para después el deseo de hacer varias cosas, incluidas acostarme en esa arena por la tarde y observar el cielo, porque siendo este un lugar tan amplio y sin nada, hace fácil observar el cielo de una manera completa.

Not long ago, I visited one of the most impressive places I have ever seen in my life, a place that, beyond being beautiful, was imposing and even artistic, because it looked like a huge painting in which the right colors had been used. The Coro Sand Dunes changed my perspective of what a beautiful place is, and I was really happy to visit it.

As I mentioned before, our visit to this place was limited by time; we had to return home early because otherwise we would arrive very late at night. So we only stayed for a short while and couldn't do much to avoid getting sand everywhere. We just ran and walked on the sand while looking at the horizon.

It was a great experience, even though I couldn't throw myself onto the sand or even lie down, which was honestly something I wanted to do as soon as I saw the place. I kept my desire to do several things for later, including lying down on that sand in the afternoon and watching the sky, because this place is so wide and empty that it's easy to observe the sky in its entirety.

​Pensando en esta experiencia y también este deseo, quise hacer un dibujo en el que hacía una de esas cosas que me hubiese gustado hacer, y esa fue mi única motivación, la verdad. Eso y, por supuesto, practicar dibujo digital, que sigue siendo un mundo nuevo para mí y en el que debo destacar nuevamente que no soy para nada experta y que sigo aprendiendo cada día. Así que déjame contarte cómo hice este dibujo.

​Comencé con el dibujo lineal, comencé dibujando las montañas grandes de arena y las minimontañitas que se forman por la brisa. Sentí que debía hacer eso primero para tener una idea de dónde colocar a mi personaje y que se viera lo más proporcional posible. Al principio quería hacer el dibujo que se viera de frente desde arriba, pero no tendría sentido entonces que se vieran las montañas de arena.

​Pensando única y exclusivamente en esto, en que pudieran aparecer en mi dibujo la forma de la arena y demás, decidí hacerlo un poco desde abajo, un dibujo en perspectiva que, honestamente, me fue súper difícil hacer. Así que pasé a hacer la estructura base de mi personaje; esto lo hago siempre, se me quedó como un hábito, para saber bien cómo posa mi personaje y además me hace más fácil dibujarlo.

Thinking about this experience and also this desire, I wanted to make a drawing in which I did one of those things I would have liked to do, and that was my only motivation, really. That and, of course, practicing digital drawing, which is still a new world for me and in which I must emphasize again that I am not an expert at all and that I am still learning every day. So let me tell you how I made this drawing.

I started with the line drawing, beginning with the large sand mountains and the mini mountains formed by the breeze. I felt I had to do that first to get an idea of where to place my character and make it look as proportional as possible. At first, I wanted to do the drawing from a front view looking down, but then it wouldn't make sense to see the sand mountains.

Thinking solely and exclusively about this, about how the shape of the sand and so on could appear in my drawing, I decided to do it a little from below, a perspective drawing that, honestly, was super difficult for me to do. So I moved on to making the basic structure of my character; I always do this, it's become a habit, so that I know exactly how my character poses and it also makes it easier for me to draw.

​Ya teniendo esto listo, comencé a rellenar o colocar la piel, como según yo el personaje de mi dibujo era yo misma, pues debía considerar su contextura y demás. Así que comencé a hacer el cuerpo, su forma, el grueso de las piernas y cómo iba a ir cada parte del cuerpo considerando que sería visto desde abajo. Como ya tenía la estructura base esto fue sencillo, y ahora solo faltaba hacer los detalles lineales de mi personaje.

​Teniendo ya lista la figura y el cuerpo, entonces ya podía ponerle ropa encima de eso y eso fue lo que hice: me iba a hacer una ropa que yo estaba usando el día que conocí los médanos. Esto facilitó mucho las cosas porque la ropa que tenía era súper sencilla: una franela verde y un jogger negro. En mi dibujo lineal consideré las arrugas de la ropa que llevaba y les di forma para luego simplemente agregar las sombras. Además de que mejoré los detalles para comenzar a pintar, como los dedos de las manos y los dedos de los pies.

​Luego pasé a hacer las arrugas de la ropa que lleva el personaje y también dibujé su rostro. El dibujo digital es para mí todo un reto, sobre todo porque la aplicación que uso para dibujar, que es Sketchbook, tiene un límite para ampliar el dibujo, así que incluso llega a verse borroso si acerco demasiado y fue lo que me pasó al hacer el rostro; aun así, improvisé un poquis y creo que no quedó tan mal.

With this ready, I began to fill in or place the skin; since I believed the character in my drawing was myself, I had to consider her build and other details. So I began to create the body, its shape, the thickness of the legs, and how each part of the body would look considering that it would be seen from below. Since I already had the basic structure, this was easy, and now all that was left was to add the linear details of my character.

With the figure and body ready, I could then put clothes on top of that, and that's what I did: I was going to make clothes that I was wearing the day I discovered the dunes. This made things a lot easier because the clothes I had were super simple: a green T-shirt and black joggers. In my line drawing, I considered the wrinkles in the clothes I was wearing and shaped them so I could then simply add the shadows. I also improved the details to start painting, such as the fingers and toes.

Then I moved on to drawing the wrinkles in the character's clothes and also drew her face. Digital drawing is quite a challenge for me, especially because the app I use to draw, which is Sketchbook, has a limit on how much you can zoom in on the drawing, so it even looks blurry if I zoom in too much, which is what happened to me when I was drawing the face. Even so, I improvised a little and I think it didn't turn out too bad.

​Luego pasé a la parte que fue la más fastidiosa en este dibujo para mí y fue el cabello, quería que se viera desordenado por la brisa, pero también quería que tuviera algo de textura y, honestamente, esto no lo logré. Siento que quedó como el cabello de Medusa, pero debo decirles que hice mi mejor esfuerzo y simplemente no pude mejorarlo porque me estresé un poco y la idea de dibujar era divertirme y disfrutar del proceso, así que lo dejé así, como algo en qué trabajar para después.

​Luego pasé a darle color al dibujo: comencé pintando la arena en general, luego pasé a pintar la piel del personaje y después la ropa del mismo. Como les dije, la parte de la ropa fue sencilla porque simplemente debía igualar la ropa que yo misma llevaba el día que fui, así que simplemente agregué estos mismos colores. Respecto al negro del jogger, utilicé un tono un poco más gris oscuro para que pudieran diferenciarse bien las líneas de las arrugas.

​Y luego pasé a hacer las sombras del dibujo, esto lo hice de la manera más sencilla posible, que fue tomando el tono original de lo que iba a agregarle sombra y poner un tono un poco más oscuro y, con el aerógrafo, simplemente agregué las sombras, tenues donde debían serlo y simplemente si quería que se vieran más oscuras volvía a pasarlo y ya está. Esto también lo hice en la ropa y en la piel y, honestamente, para un dibujo como este es una buena manera de hacerlo y además es sencilla.

Then I moved on to the part that was the most annoying for me in this drawing, which was the hair. I wanted it to look messy from the breeze, but I also wanted it to have some texture, and honestly, I didn't achieve that. I feel like it ended up looking like Medusa's hair, but I have to tell you that I did my best and I just couldn't improve it because I got a little stressed out, and the idea of drawing was to have fun and enjoy the process, so I left it like that, as something to work on later.

Then I moved on to coloring the drawing: I started by painting the sand in general, then I moved on to painting the character's skin and then their clothes. As I said, the clothes were easy because I just had to match the clothes I was wearing myself on the day I went, so I just added these same colors. For the black of the joggers, I used a slightly darker gray tone so that the lines of the wrinkles could be clearly distinguished.

Then I moved on to the shadows in the drawing. I did this in the simplest way possible, which was to take the original shade of what I was going to add shadow to and make it a little darker. With the airbrush, I simply added the shadows, making them faint where they needed to be, and if I wanted them to look darker, I just went over them again, and that was it. I also did this on the clothing and skin, and honestly, for a drawing like this, it's a good way to do it and it's also simple.

​Dejé para el final el cielo porque no sabía exactamente cómo lo quería: si quería un cielo azul despejado, un atardecer o un poco de ambos, y al final decidí que un poco de ambos. Por lo que coloqué una base azul, pero sobre él puse algunos tonos amarillos, nubes blancas también pintadas de amarillo debido a que el sol comenzaba a caer un poco y, por último, para darle el toque final, agregué unas aves que se ven volando en el horizonte.

​Y eso fue todo, este es el dibujo digital que me ha tomado menos tiempo, precisamente porque no tiene una cantidad excesiva de detalles pero aun así tiene los suyos y eso para mí estuvo súper bien. El resultado me gustó mucho y, aunque no es como tal mi estilo de dibujo, noté que sí me salió bien, sí disfruté del proceso y además no fue tan difícil; así que puede ser este tipo de dibujo que hacemos para distraer un rato la mente y practicar.

I left the sky for last because I didn't know exactly how I wanted it: whether I wanted a clear blue sky, a sunset, or a little of both. In the end, I decided on a little of both. So I put down a blue base, but on top of that I added some yellow tones and white clouds also painted yellow because the sun was beginning to set a little. Finally, to give it the finishing touch, I added some birds flying on the horizon.

And that was it. This is the digital drawing that took me the least amount of time, precisely because it doesn't have an excessive amount of detail, but it still has its own, and that was great for me. I really liked the result, and although it's not my usual drawing style, I noticed that it turned out well, I enjoyed the process, and it wasn't that difficult, so it could be the kind of drawing we do to distract our minds for a while and practice.
