The Little Prince, Sculpture carved in Wood - El Principito, Escultura tallada en Madera [ENG-ESP]

Hello dear friends, I hope you are all feeling very well and are doing the things you like most, as wood carving has become my latest passion, I want to share with you a small sculpture that I made of The Little Prince, the protagonist of the story. which bears his name, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and which tells the adventures of the little prince who can travel through different worlds and live different adventures and learn new things. This is a book that I read very regularly, I have always liked the story of this classic of literature and if you have not read it yet, please read it, you will not regret it. I have made this figure based on a personalized design, I will briefly comment here on how the process was and I hope you like it, let's get started!

Hola queridos amigos, espero que todos se encuentren muy bien y estén haciendo las cosas que más les gusta, como el tallado en madera se ha vuelto mi última pasión, quiero compartir con ustedes una pequeña escultura que hice de El Principito, el protagonista del cuento que lleva su nombre, escrita por Antoine de Saint-Exupéry y que narra las aventuras del pequeño príncipe quien puede viajar por diferentes mundos y vivir diferentes aventuras y aprender nuevas cosas. Este es un libro que lo leo con mucha regularidad, la historia de este clásico de la literatura siempre me ha gustado y sino lo han leído todavía, por favor, léanlo, no se arrepentirán. He realizado esta figura basándome en un diseño personalizado, comento aquí brevemente como fue el proceso y espero que les guste, comencemos!

PROCESS

On this occasion I was able to incorporate a new tool, my father gave it to me, he had it stored unused for many years when he worked as a carpenter, he gave it to me so I could improve my wood carving skills. I used a piece of wood 10 centimeters high by 5 centimeters wide and on top of it, I drew the silhouette of the little prince.

En esta oportunidad pude incorporar una nueva herramienta, mi padre me la dió, la tenía guardada sin usar por muchos años cuando trabajaba como carpintero, me la obsequió para así poder mejorar mis habilidades tallando madera. Utilicé una trozo de madera de 10 centímetros de alto por 5 centímetros de ancho y encima de él, dibujé la silueta del pequeño príncipe.

The wood was a little hard this time, I think it is one of those parts where it has greater density, so to save time I made some cuts with the saw and reduce the size of the wood considerably to carve better. After this I began to cut the entire silhouette with the cutter, until it was a 2D figure.

La madera estaba un poco dura esta vez, creo que es de esas partes donde tiene mayor densidad, a´si que para ahorrar tiempo hice algunos cortes con la cierra y reducir el tamaño de la madera considerablemente para tallar mejor. Luego de esto comence a cortar con el cúter toda la silueta, hasta que quedara en una figura 2D

When I make the cut completely, I begin to give it a little shape on one of its sides, first highlighting the scarf that he used on some of his trips, then I continue with the head, which took some work because in that part the wood It was denser and so I gave it more shape until I was able to stand upright in the figure that I had made up to that moment.

Al hacer el corte por completo, comienzo a darle un poco de forma en uno de sus lados, resaltando en primer lugar la bufanda que utilizó en algunos de sus viajes, después sigo con la cabeza, que me cotó trabajo porque en esa parte la madera era más densa y asi le fuí dando mas forma hasta lograr parar de pie la figura que hasta el momento había realizado.

Then I draw the silhouette but this time I do it in profile, and I also begin to shape it, this is how, for example, the sleeve that covers his arms and his small hands emerges. Since there was a lot of space left in the wood, I also made some cuts in the back of the figure to then also give it a similar shape to the front and make it look like a 3D piece.

Luego dibujo la silueta pero en esta ocasión lo hago de perfil, y también comienzo a darle forma, así va saliendo por ejemplo la manga que cubre sus brazos y sus pequeñas manos. Como sobraba mucho espacio en la madera, también hice unos cortes en la parte trasera de la figura para luego también darle una forma similar a la parte delantera y lograr que se viera como una pieza 3D

At this point in the work I then began to apply a lot of pressure on the cutter to be able to give it many details, as you can see the back part was very well carved, keeping similarity to the front part. Something that I really liked was shaping her small head, which I made her hair and tried to make some strands of, but the wood was very strong so I helped myself with other objects. Then I began to polish the entire piece so that the surface was very clean and smooth, but not before drawing the rest and then making some modifications.

A esta altura del trabajo comencé entonces a aplicar mucha presión en el cúter para poder darle muchos detalles, como pueden observar la parte trasera quedó muy bien tallada guardando similitud con la parte delantera. Algo que me gustó mucho fue darle forma a su pequeña cabeza la cual hice el cabello y trate de hacerle algunos mechones pero la madera era muy fuerte así que me ayudé con otros objetos. Luego comencé a pulir toda la pieza para que la superficie quedara muy limpia y suave, no sin antes dibujar el resotro para luego hacer algunas modificaciones.

After sanding the entire piece of wood very well, I prepared it to give it a bath of varnish, then I polished it again with a softer sandpaper and gave it another bath of varnish, I always like to do it two to three times so that it looks better, Finally I painted his eyes and that's how it was finished.

Después de lijar muy bien toda la pieza de madera la preparé para darle un baño de barniz, luego volví a pulir con una lija mas suave y le di otro baño de barníz, siempre me gusta hacerlo de dos a tres veces para que quede mejor, por último pinté sus ojos y así quedó finalizado.

FINAL WORK

What did you think of the result? It is the first figure, so to speak, human, since I had only dedicated myself to making creatures, so this is a small beginning, and as the Little Prince said, "what is essential is invisible to the eyes." Qué les ha parecido el resultado? Es la primera figura por así decirlo, humana, ya que solo me había dedicado a hacer criaturas, así que este es un pequeño comienzo, y como dijo el Principito, "lo esencial es invisible a los ojos".
