Hands-Free & Handmade: How I Made My Crochet Arm Phone Holder

in NeedleWorkMonday9 months ago (edited)

It has always been an issue figuring out where to put my phone every time I go for a run. I find it disturbing if it's placed in my leg pocket, and I always worry that it might fall out. Just the feeling of something there tends to throw off my movement. So, I decided to create an arm phone holder, since I find my phone a necessity for taking photos or in case of emergencies , especially where we are, in the quiet and hilly countryside. (I always put my phone on aeroplane mode whenever it’s near my body to help reduce exposure to radiation.)

Lately, I've been pretty tied up, so I took the chance to sew while traveling to a couple of places, and I was pleased that I wasn’t the one driving.

During our trip to Frodsham, I brought along some yarn and my crochet kit.

I had two acrylic yarns and a 3.5 mm hook.

I started by making the pocket in beige.

First, I crocheted a chain to measure the length of the pocket, doubling it to create the sides as I planned to fold it later.

Then, I used half double crochet stitches all the way across, which gave the fabric a bit of stretch, until I was happy with the width.

By the time we reached the iconic Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge in Frodsham, I had finished crocheting the pocket.

The way back was too dark to continue, so I had to wait for another opportunity.

Yesterday, as we traveled to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, I began working on the band to hold the pocket.

I made a chain and measured it around my arm, making sure it was tight enough to stay in place.

Once again, I used half double crochet to give it a bit of stretch.

I continued until I reached the desired width.

As we passed the iconic Edwardian cast iron Chamberlain clockin the Jewellery Quarter, I was done.

On the way back, I folded the band and crocheted the short sides together to complete the band..

Once I was home, it was time to assemble everything.

I securely sewed the sides to create a band and a pocket.

I stitched the pocket on top of the band.

I made sure it is secured well.

To decorate it, I crocheted a flower applique and attached it to the upper side of the pocket.

I was pleased to finish it!

I was pretty happy with how it turned out — it’s stretchy, yet secure, and fits my phone perfectly.

Now, my runs are hands-free and comfortable.

Have a lovely day,
Mariah 🧵🤎

Ita a brilliant idea I must commend you. So long as the phone doesn't fall out and it's comfortable there you will find it easy to exercise. Such a perfect combination and your photography in the car too is great.

Thank you; I really appreciate your lovely feedback. Yes, it was fun making it in the car. 💗😊

Great work. It’s both an art piece and a practical stuff.

Thank you. You sure have an artistic eye too! It is definitely practical, and I used it nicely during this morning's run.

That’s actually why I want to learn how to crochet, I just really want to make something useful for myself. Also, your craft is so pretty!
