The strange thing to me is that, among all the women knitters, it was my father who taught me (I am guessing that my mum was busy cooking or working elsewhere in the house, it wasn't that she didn't want to teach me). He also learned to knit when he was very young, maybe eight or nine, and knitted for himself and for others. I have been learning to knit a different way (I will write about it another time), and I was struggling until I realised I had to hold the yarn a different way to have the tactile experience.
