A sweater with special flair: Fibremood Paola

in NeedleWorkMonday3 years ago

Monday Monday… and my too wide jeans are still too wide. But thanks to your amazing ideas how to rescue the jeans, I not only have now ideas how to alter them successfully I also found more love for them. Isn’t this funny? The jeans are still too big, but somehow, I am starting to like them even with this excess fabric. And while wearing them I though of some comfortable sweatshirts to pair with the dark blue trousers, but sweatshirts which are a bit more… like stylish sweatshirts? Unusual sweatshirts? Fashion sweatshirts…? :-DDD

I had two fabrics in my stash that were desperately shouting at me that I please sew something out of them. Both fabrics have stretch - good for sweatshirts - and have colors which in my eyes pair perfectly with jeans (and a lot of other trousers in many wardrobe which is in itself a wonder, as I normally knit and sew with colors which are wonderful alone, but make you dizzy if I wear them with garments I already own – puh long sentence :-DDD).
When I write „stylish or special“ sweatshirt I mean a shirt which has a bit of an extra like statement sleeves, a hood or pockets or an unusual construction. But as I am like a human bunny who only wants to cuddle this shirt also needs to be super comfortable.

Design ohne Titel(91).jpg

My newest make which ticks all these boxes is again a fibremood pattern (although I am such a fangirl, they still do not pay me…😱). It is the fibremood Paola sweatshirt, a wide shirt with dropped shoulders and a ruffled sleeve, with options to add a kangaroo pocket and a hood. LOOOOVE
I decided to sew size M which is a perfect comfortable wide fit for me. I omitted hood, pocket, and the waistband. The latter is something I often do as I like short wide shirts.
The sewing process of the Paola sweatshirt is uncomplicated. The dropped shoulders and the gathered sleeves are forgiving as is the wide fit at the bust. A breeze to sew. The one thing which could be new, if someone has not made a lot of sweatshirts, is the construction of the backside which incorporates a yoke. This means one must sew together two slightly curved pattern pieces. I did (besides the gathering) everything on the overlocker and found it manageable.

Design ohne Titel(92).jpg

My first Paola is a fabric out of the scrap box, meaning: I accidentally sewed very sustainable because it needed to puzzle the pattern pieces together, needed to add some patches to get the wide sleeves out of a much too small scrap fabric (the fabric was 1 x 1,40 m). On the foto you can see the tiny amount of fabric I had left over :-DDD Sadly I missed that the fabric has a weaving mistake, but as I arraigned it on the backside it is nearly invisible. I only have photos of this first Paola version without neckband and sleeve cuffs. But as you can see, I love it already.

My next Poala is made from a fabric which perhaps is meant for making toys :-D It is a super fluffy violet stretch fabric. The upside of this fabric is that I am very pet-able when I wear it, the downside was I had to vacuum the studio several times while cutting and sewing the sweatshirt.
But even this could not dampen my joy over this cute shirt (you notice, I am easy to please).

Design ohne Titel(87).jpg

I already am pondering to sew some more Paolas … perhaps one in thinner fabric for the summer. But I am not sure if the gathered sleeves will look as cute in thinner fabric, because it has less stand.

Oh, and one more thing, the Paola sweatshirt has bracelet-length sleeves, something I do not fancy at all. For me it was no bigger problem as the fibremood patterns are constructed for taller humans than me, so the sleeves are shortish but not unbearable for me. But be warned if you have longer arms or are taller and want an honest long-sleeve shirt you need to lengthen the sleeves.

Do you have a "special" sweatshirt pattern you can recommend? Something I should look into?

I love the first top - the fabric and the shape. Are you wearing it with the too wide jeans? They look just right, not too wide at all 😍.

The second top is cute, but hmm, not sure about all the fluff, lovely colour, though!

I was also drawn to the rough woven optic of the white/pink fabric. I would have loved to buy a little more, but the shop does not sell it regularly (only in the scrap box... very strange, I think they intentionally buy scraps to sell them cheap)
To be honest the purple one is my favourite: sooooo fluffy but also very lightweight and warm. I feel like a huge toy animal in it 😆 I know its a strange fabric choice, but must admit I am pondering to buy another color in this quality.
And yes, these are the too wide jeans worn with a belt. I still want to take them in a bit at the waist, so that they do not drop down when I wear them without a belt :-DDD
But the dream of sewing pants is revived…

Is the fluffy one a chenille? I used to have a chenille sweater and it was a favorite but eventually the fluff wore off and I was left with a threadbare sweater.

Uhhhhh I have no idea. It has the same "feel" like a microfibre cleaning cloth, so I guess its synthetic fibre, but which one, no clue. Perhaps I should add this book as a ko-fi goal - not that anybody acknowledged my ok-fi so far 🤣😱

Oh okay, yeah, that does sound nice and fluffy. :)

I wish I could contribute to all my creative friends' ko-fis and Patreons, but as it is I need patrons to live, lol. Maybe one day I'll win the lotto...

You should totally put the book as a goal though! :)

Wow! super!!! This shirt really suits you. purple fabric I usually call "bear cub". a long large piece of jewelry is suitable for this, if you like such jewelry. or a bright scarf or shawl. and I just fell in love with the light shirt. it is very refreshing to look at and looks very cool with jeans

Thank youuuu 😘 I also love the bright purple and the idea of a jewellery is a good one. I loved big necklaces for longer, but the headaches are the reason I do not wear them anylonger: Even a tiny necklace is pulling too much at my neck. But the scarf/shawl will be doable. Thank you for this good idea (especially as spring has given up here and the cold came back 🥶)

I love that you have achieved results without so many traumas, your flannels look beautiful, too beautiful. They look great on you, a good choice for your jeans.

Thank youuuuu, I am also so happy with both sweatshirts, I already wore the purple on this weekend during a very long work meeting (you know I am volunteering in a charity organisation and right now a lot of refugees from the Ukraine are arriving).

I love both tops, @neumannsalva !

It's really interesting to see how the look of the garment can be changed by adding or leaving out the cuffs.

😊

I am a huge fan of hemless (is this word creation possible?) sweatshirts. Somehow I do not like the bunching a hem creates on my body...
But by the way, i just now wanted to write you ... curious how the dressperiment (I have a word-improvisation day) is going so far?

😂 the 'dressperiment' is going slowly, @neumannsalva

I got as far as printing, sellotaping and then tracing the correct size for Jen and she changed her mind !
She wants another dress first ( it's very much like an under dress ? ). So I have now printed but still need to Sellotape and trace the Oleander dress. I know it sounds funny but it's got its internal logic - I'm hoping she'll be doing some of the sewing to get her to learn.

Oleander dress is also super cute I even like the flower fabric mood society is using. But the dress looks very formfitting… I would for sure botch it and make it either super wide or too narrow. I cross my fingers you soon have a sewing pupil 😍

I love both tops but the purple appeals to me more, I love anything made in purple color and am working on something in that shade already.

It really amazes me to see that some of your work is gotten from book, I don't have access to books or magazines on fashion.
Most times I make up everything from my head and just sew what my mind inspires me to do.

Having the fibre mood Paola design in thin fabrics will be great too.
Though it may not have that stand but it will carry a free flowing effect in the wind.
I do have something in that fashion too.

Yeah to purple🎉. I already read your comment yesterday and will follow your advice with the thinner fabric. I directly washed some thinner fabric (also purple but a bit more reddish) to make another version of this sweatshirt for warmer days. I think I will try out the hood too.
And yes, sewing magazines are really cool here. They often have nice new designs and are much cheaper than books for learning pattern making (you know I am not so skilled like you with sewing 🙂) You only have to find a magazine which has sizes which fit your body :-DDDD Most European magazines are made for women with a much bigger bust size than me and for taller people… I am short :-DDD

The pants look good on you just the way they are, they look like the ones that are fashionable in Argentina now. Wide pants for girls and men wear them a little tighter. There are those who say that fashions were reversed 😂.

And it's good that you've taken advantage of a disused fabric for this project, it's so satisfying to finish something, but it's so hard to start it 😅😅😅

I guess fashion is kind of international since social media (and good to hear my trousers are trendy :-D) I am not a big fan of TikTok as I do not like to watch videos (I get kind of ill like motion sickness in a car when watching fast videos 🤪🤢) But some of the fashion trends spread over to insta or YouTube and wow do they change fast ... Sometimes it seems things which are fashion one day are out only two weeks later 😮 Although I love to see new designs or crazy outfits, this seems so wasteful...

Beautiful very lovely and suitable very lovely thanks for sharing

Lovely tops! I definitely love comfortable clothing, especially as I get older. It needs to move with me and not make a fuss as I move from one project to the next!

I so often see beautiful outfits blouses and a vest and cardigan and than on top a jacket… I rely love the thoughtful compositions, but so impractical. I love to walk and move in my clothes and wearing so many layers feels uncomfortable for me.So, here I am: sweatshirt woman 🤣
Do you have any recommendations for shirts/sweatshirts you really love to make?

Until it is too hot, I am a sweater gal. Sometimes two sweaters at a time (I have lived in some drafty houses over the decades). What I am going to be sewing for myself are linen dresses and comfortable skirts. As I get older I want to add more whimsy into my life. More ruffles, perhaps. You know how the creative process is @neumannsalva. It's a learning and adapting process!

Oh so cute and once again YOU ARE SO PRODUCTIVE!!! I am in awe.

The upside of this fabric is that I am very pet-able when I wear it, the downside was I had to vacuum the studio several times while cutting and sewing the sweatshirt.

The other upside: cats may want to snuggle you. The other downside: creepy dudes may want to snuggle you. ;)

Oh, and too wide jeans. That is a problem I remember but DO NOT HAVE of late. I totally gained the covid 20 or the perimenopause 20 or something. I haven't actually weighed myself but my jeans are bit too small now, not too large... 😅

Thankfully the fluffy garment does not foster interest of creepy dudes so far but cat attention sounds lovely. If creepy dudes appear I could perhaps execute my arson skills? Or borrow your guillotine...🙏

And with the wide jeans.. sigh... weight gain is not rewarded in our society. And sadly I am completely brainwashed by society's beauty models (regarding my own body... I am completely different with other people and am able to notice much more forms of beauty) so I am on the one hand happy to be slimmer, but on the other hand... the weight loss is not intentional but owed to an increase of headaches. I really hope the hormones (😱 yes taking hormones now) help with this.
And thank you so much for cheering me on ❤️

Of course we can break out the guillotine! ;)

(regarding my own body... I am completely different with other people and am able to notice much more forms of beauty)

Oh, I feel this so much. I think all sorts of people are beautiful or just don't notice/care/judge, but in my own body I'm like "EEECH. What is thiiiiiis". Of course with me it's tied up with dysphoria because when I gain weight, I look more curvaceous/"feminine," and that really bothers me. When I was thin I was sometimes mistaken for a young lad, which, ya know, was mistaking me for way too young but at least they got the gender right. 😂

Oh man, I hope those hormones help the headaches. You need relief!!!

I did not think about your body image… thoughtless me… sorry 🙈 THis adds another layer of complicated and I have no clever ideas how to cope. I can only say for me that the perception of other peoples gender often has a lot to do with body language, tone of voice etc. but this is my outside perception… does not help in the least with inside perception. And I fear I am not good with gender roles… mine are perhaps a bit wobbly (and not often thought through, especially regarding others, shame on me)
Although I like to dress with feminine read clothes (skirt, dresses) I am not a big fan of clear gender roles (here it gets complicated for me in English… so if it sounds stupid please blame my language skills). I kind of always assume that everybody could change their gender or maybe I do not feel that certain traits are gender bound (sighhhhhh - language!!!!) and I am sometimes very surprised when friends have super clear sex/gender roles they behave after and which they see as completely fixed.
THis was the attempt to explain why I did not thought about how gaining/loosing wait could help you to identify/accept? your body.
Ok… too long… my comment got too long… and perhaps I completely failed the point as I am not sure if societies norms regarding sex/gender representation do play a role in your inner acceptance.
Feel free to ignore this comment, I again blame the language 😱 (but I tried)

thoughtless me… sorry

No, you did nothing wrong at all. I was just commiserating with how it feels like there's not judgement for other people's bodies but definitely some exists for my own.

Yeah, I agree that lots of things shouldn't really be "gender bound" when they're just human traits, and not male/female traits. A lot of people, even if they are cisgender, feel bound by "rules" because of how society thinks genders should act, and it's silly. People are individuals and have the whole range of human experience and limiting themselves because they think "that's a boy thing" or "a girl thing" is just limiting your experience pretty arbitrarily. Like, boys can cry and like to do crafty things (which are generally considered "feminine" things), and girls can get angry and like to play sports (which are generally considered "masculine" things), and to shame people for it is ridiculous.

In fact, one of the big reasons I think why I didn't realize I was trans until later in life is because I just thought I was "doing feminism" like NO DO NOT TREAT ME WITH YOUR STEREOTYPES OF HOW YOU THINK GIRLS SHOULD BE RAWR and it didn't quite register that it wasn't just about expectations and stereotypes for me but something far more. Like I thought I was rebelling against social expectations but really I just felt wrong all around and I didn't have the words for it.
