Ciao dearest Needlework folks... I promise, this is the final post of this finished apron-dress!

DSC_0005.JPG

I have already shared two posts about this project, but now needed to share the final final final details, because I actually have been working on it a LOT in the past weeks - fully by hand - to correct some specific aspects which were preventing me from really enjoying it as a perfect garment!

DSC_0003.JPG

Most notably, the straps, which are double, black and white, and which come from the top of the front bib, into a single strap which buttons at the back to the waistband:

These straps went through multiple changes, and finally settled into this lovely chiaroscuro effect, once I'd added this chest dart (above) and decided NOT to chop the sides into a straight line.

DSC_0015.JPG

The sides of the bib were a tad un-neat for me, and I wanted them to be more fitted: putting in the second, silk, black strap helped tighten the sides of the bib onto the form. It helped very much at this point, that I had just acquired my first tailor's mannequin! This made a huge difference to how I was able to correct the tensions in the straps.

I love how it sits right. I added a lot of hand-stitching along the edges of the white straps, as I imagined wearing the dress, and having a white top underneath it - and how this would lose the details, if I didn't 'underline' them.

I took a lot of time to think and feel into the project, between the last update and this one; it took me a lot of letting go, to just listen to the garment and let the natural, easy form of it come out.

As you can see here (the petals on the cobbles were a nice detail that I wanted to include: there was a religious event in the street last evening), I also made some handstitching emphasis on the lower hem of the outer white skirt portion, too. This helped tie it together with the rest of the garment - rather than it being a big white sheet-like skirt part. This took a long time to sew! I did it whilst having an aperitivo and then after Sunday lunch at Maria's house. 😍 I've been doing a lot of social sewing lately, and really enjoy being out in public/ company when I'm working by hand.

Above it another of the important details which helped the bodice form nicely. I made two darts into the top of the bib; this involved being super careful to folk it along the patterns, and stitch it very neatly and solidly in place.

And this is a close-up of the two tiny shiny buttons which originally really attracted me to the first black silk apron...

DSC_0012.JPG

...them and the pockets - I adore pockets!! These were just divine, and I immediately snapped up the 50c bargain, knowing that alone the black silk apron was awfully small and long-thin, but that I could incorporate it into something else, and make the very most of the beautiful aspects it had.

DSC_0013.JPG

In the end, the apron-dress has elements of at least 4 other garments in it! The whole skirt part - black and white - are layered double: two layers of black silk and two layers of thin white cotton. (I might still layer the top bodice too.) The layering seemd important, as the outer black skirt was very fragile, and the back white part was too see-through.

A final snap of the complex stitching that I machine-sewed into the waistband back at the beginning: I wanted to be certain that the elastic would be held in place firmly!

Enjoy your needleworkfoussing challenge, dear friends! I hope that you appreciate my efforts with improving my photography!!

😇

LoVe!

How beautiful!!
I love the back, and the many layers, and also the pockets and the details, actually everything😅

...you made me think about the social sewing, I guess back in the days there would be a lot of that going on. Like sewing in groups or in the living room with everyone around...
(one of these days I want to get back into it, like hand sewing in public, but I haven't yet found the thing to work on or the inspiration... mind you every time I read about your hand sewing it inspires me to get on with it :))

oooh, so beautiful to be mutually-inspiring each other, dearest @kesityu.fashion !! Yes, I sometimes feel like I'm going a bit over the top, when I take my sewing to the bar which has mostly young men in it - but we have to start somewhere: to me, it's the equivalent of sitting on my doorstep: I could sit on my doorstep, but so few people walk past my house on a typical day (often, only one or two all day long!) that it wouldn't really feel like social sewing. I don't have a women's group here either: most of the women my age are at home with children or have left the town for the city... I love hanging out, anyways, by myself but amongst folk, and occasionally it sparks up a conversation with someone passing by. 😍 Look forward to going to the bar with you and sewing to our hearts' content, sometime in the future!

I guess sometimes the oddest situations might bring up the most interesting conversations:) somehow there are a lot of nice encounters coming out of doing the things you love in public or exposed...
But then as well I feel you, sometimes you are in a place where everyone around you is totally not into "the same thing", the internet helps a bit in some ways🙃

Look forward to going to the bar with you and sewing to our hearts' content, sometime in the future!

Definitely!!💜

I'm imagining how long it will take to make this beauty with hands...a week, two weeks, one month? This must definitely require a lot of patience and paying attention to details. Some of us find it hard to mend our dress with needle and threads 🤭

Yes - a month or two at least, though I had a lot of time between sessions, dear @debbie-ese - thank you for commenting and encouraging me! I do love cultivating my patience, as I can be a bit hasty and careless in my everyday... It's healthy to cultivate balance, eh! 😍

A month or two! That's a lot of work. Well-done and keep it up dear

Oh and it's in black and white! 😍

Finally I get to see you apron work! Lovely back idea, this can easily be worn without shirt or anything beneath (hope the white part of the skirt isn't much see trough)

Lace details and pockets are definitely grabbing attention!

Thank you so much for these good comments, dear @alt3r ! Yey, it is mostly nor see-through, now that I lined the skirts part, but I do need to possibly add another layer to the bib. Or wear it with a bikini top underneath. Probably I'll use a long-sleeved shirt though, as we are now in full zanzare season. Lots of biting insects around, which is one reason that I make longer dresses.

Much good vibes on your day!

In case of biting insects, long sleeves then! 😂

No matter what you combine, I'm sure it will look lovely 😍 you are most welcome!

Wow, I tell you the truth, I admire it, I don't have the patience to sew so meticulously by hand 🤭, it's an excellent job.

I really liked the detail on the back and the petals are beautiful, another thing I don't like being looked at while I'm doing work makes me nervous 😂, I hope you have a happy Monday

Aww, thank you dearest @marlynmont - it's beautiful to get your encouraging comments here... Makes me proud of how I'm progressing! It's really good to be in this community every Monday 😍😍

💖🌺💕🤗

wow! you've put in so much work into achieving this beauty, you really paid attention to the tiniest of details, and to think it was hand made, just wow! My two favorite parts are the added black straps and the pocket pleats.

Thank you, dear @glorydee !! It is a pleasure to share here, and to join the challenge to improve my photos! I tend to get more into hand-sewing, the further into each project I get: I can use the machine for the basic form, then I like all the details to be sewn slowly... It is so nice to sit and have a cuppa or a glass of wine, whilst sewing - this really motivates me 😇 😁

Oh @clareartista! I truly appreciate your photographic efforts of improvement on this lovely apron. I admire your dedication to make your hand sewn pieces that of what you love. You took the time to work on all the details (that double strap is amazing and I love it) putting everything in it’s proper place and the results are really great.

I love the outside setting you chose for your photoshoot. Oh and adding those petals in the photo was a good way to include an element that would enhance it. I love how bright and clear your photos are and it was such a pleasure to enjoy them. Very nice work on getting a variation of angles and closeups in, it’s as if we were standing right there with this piece of art.

Congrats to you on such a beautiful work with both your sewing skills and photography improvements. Thank you for taking on this challenge. Well done ~ 🎉💓

😍

Thank you too, for your firm-handed motivation, dearest @crosheille !! This was a push I really needed, and it is satifying to get the right photos - just as well I did it this morning, as we are having a super-dark deluge here right now! I am making my first proper underskirt today, too, and will wait until the sun shines, to make good photos of it, out on the sunny street in front of my giardinetto - fun!

Absolutely! It is such a pleasure for me to help give that extra push I know we all need sometime. 😉

It is paying off already my dear, keep going. I’m very excited to see how you’ll be displaying your underskirt ~

Beautiful pictures! Love the lightning and outdoor setting
and how you depict and describe all these details :<)

I applaud you for your supercreative and patient work, this is real creation.

P.S. Couldn't help but wonder if the mannequin is your size? :<)

💑

Aw, thank you hugely for your encouragement dearest @vincentnijman ! Yes, the figure is more-or-less similar to mine - enough to get clothing to fit: I was fortunate to have been able to find a mannequin of these dimensions, for an affordable price online. 😍😇 It makes construction much more straightforward.

I see.

I am very glad you have a head - and face - though, which enables you to talk and think and makes it possible for us to have all kinds of amazing conversations ;<) ❤️

Hi @artsugar, beautiful work, I like your photos.
