Upcycling Old Long Native Trouser to a Cargo Short in 4 Easy Steps.

Hello hive! 👋

It's another beautiful Monday to share our creativity with our dear community #NeedleworkMonday

My father-in-law mentioned he wanted some casual shorts for wearing around the house, something simple and comfy. I noticed he had several clothes in his wardrobe that he hadn't worn in over a year.

Instead of buying new shorts, why not upcycle one of his abandoned clothes?

That's exactly what I thought! This approach is not only budget friendly but also #sustainable.

In Four (4) easy steps, I'll show you how I achieve this 👇

The Upcycling Process:

I chose this beautiful African print long native trouser because the fabric was perfect for casual wear.

Step 1
I Laid the trouser flat, measured and cut to his desired short length ensuring a proper fit for his preferences

Step 2
I removed the original rope drawstring, replaced it with elastic band for maximum comfort (exactly what he wanted)

Step 3
I folded and secured the new hem

Step 4
Instead of wasting the excess fabric I cut off from the length, I used it to cut side cargo pockets on both sides. The original trouser had an inbuilt pocket already so, this is just for extra storage.

These shorts turned out super simple and comfortable, exactly what he requested! The entire process took less than an hour and the outcome looks so cute.

I hope this project inspires us to create rather than discard! ♻️✂️
