Crochet a chunky scrunchie (tutorial) / Faire un chouchou au crochet (tutoriel) [EN/FR]

This is my first post in the NeedleWorkMonday community. I started crocheting at the beginning of 2024 and it's an activity I love!

Some time ago, I started making a hair scrunchie, then a second, a third and since then, I haven't stopped. I make them in every color to match all my outfits!

And I thought you might be interested. So today, I'm going to share with you the steps I followed to crochet these little hair scrunchies!

Materials I used:

For this scrunchie, I used green acrylic yarn and a 4mm crochet hook. I also needed a hair elastic. And another ball of acrylic yarn (another color) to make a pretty outline.

Steps :

Step 1: make single crochet all around the elastic band

To do this, start by making a slipknot to place the yarn on your hook.

Then take your elastic band. Pass your hook through the inside of your elastic (photo 1), then yarn hover hook to catch the yarn (photo 2). Now, you have 2 loops on your hook. Then you need to yarn hover hook again and pass the yarn through the first loop (photo 3). Then you need to yarn hover hook again and pass the yarn through both loops (photo 4). You'll have your first single crochet wrapped around the elastic.

Then repeat the same movement around the elastic. Cover the elastic with single crochets. There's no exact number, but the aim is to get the elastic out of sight.

Step 2: close the round (first row)

Once you've completed all your single crochets, you'll need to do a slip stitch to close the round (first row). To do this, simply stitch through the first single crochet, yarn hover and pass through the two loops.

Step 3: chain 2 and make 2 half double crochets in the same stitch

Once you've closed your round, you can move on to the second row. To do this, you'll need to chain 2.

Then, still in the same stitch (that of your slip stitch), you need to make 2 half double crochets.

To make a half double crochet, you need to :

• yarn hover hook (photo 1) ;
• stitch through the stitch (photo 2) ;
• yarn hover hook again (photo 3);
• pass the yarn through the three loops (photo 4).

Step 4: Make 3 half double crochets in each single crochet.

Now that you've finished with your first stitch and made: chain 2 and 2 half double crochets in the same stitch, you can move on to the next step.

To continue with your second row, you'll need to make 3 half double crochets in each single crochet stitch.

You'll see, as you go along, your scrunchie will undulate.

Once you've made 3 half double crochets in each of your single crochet, you'll close the row with a slip stitch. To do this, you stitch in the first stitch, do a yarn hover hook then pass through the two loops on your hook.

And here you have a choice:

• if you think your scrunchy is too small, you can continue with step 5 and make a new row of 3 half double crochets in each stitch;
• and if you're happy with the size, you can go straight on to step 6: contouring.

Step 5: repeat a row of 3 half double crochets in each stitch

Nothing too complicated here. Simply repeat step 4: chain 2 and make 2 half double crochets in the same stitch (for the first stitch), then make 3 half double crochets in each stitch.

At the end of your row, close it with a slip stitch.

Step 6: add a border in another color

Before adding your second color, you'll need to close your project. To do this, you cut your yarn (keeping a bit of length) then make a chain 1 by pulling all the yarn. To be on the safe side, you can do a knot with the remaining thread.

Now you can change the color. There are several solutions for this. For my part, I simply made a slip knot with the new color on my hook, then passed through a stitch in my project, and made a slip stitch.

By the way, for this border, you're simply going to make a slip stitch in each half double crochet of the previous row.

Once you've reached the end, you finish with a slip stitch in the first stitch to close your round. And then you can close your project in the same way as before: by cutting yarn, then making a chain 1 and pulling all the yarn through. Don't forget to tie a simple knot to secure.

Step 7: Tuck in the threads

You're just about ready to wear your super chunky scrunchie! But first, let's move on to the step I hate: tucking in the threads.

To do this, you'll need a yarn needle and some patience.

All you have to do is insert your yarn into your needle and then pass the needle inside the stitches. You can then tie a final simple knot and cut off the excess thread.

Tucking in the threads secures your project, so it shouldn't reopen.

Step 8 and final step: proudly wear your new crochet scrunchie

Now you can embellish your hairstyles and looks with your new scrunchie!

Ceci est mon premier post dans la communauté NeedleWorkMonday. Je me suis mise au crochet au début de l’année 2024 et c’est une activité que j’affectionne !

Il y a quelque temps, j’ai commencé à me faire un chouchou pour cheveux, puis un deuxième, un troisième et depuis, je ne m’arrête plus. J’en fais de toutes les couleurs pour aller avec toutes mes tenues !

Et je me suis dit que cela pourrait sûrement vous intéresser. Alors aujourd’hui, je vais partager avec vous les étapes que j’ai suivies pour fabriquer ces petits chouchous pour cheveux au crochet !

Le matériel que j’ai utilisé :

Pour ce chouchou, j’ai utilisé une laine acrylique de couleur verte et un crochet 4mm. J’ai également eu besoin d’un élastique à cheveux. Et d’une autre pelote de laine acrylique pour faire un joli contour.

Les étapes :

1ère étape : faire des mailles serrées tout autour de l’élastique

Pour cela, vous devez commencer par faire un nœud coulant pour placer la laine sur votre crochet.

Ensuite, vous prenez votre élastique. Et vous allez passer votre crochet par l’intérieur de votre élastique (photo 1), puis faire un jeté pour attraper la laine (photo 2). Vous avez donc 2 boucles sur votre crochet. Vous devez ensuite faire un autre jeté et passer le fil dans la première boucle (photo 3). Il faut ensuite faire un autre jeté et passer la laine dans les deux boucles (photo 4). Vous aurez votre première maille serrée autour de l’élastique.

Vous devez ensuite répéter le même mouvement tout autour de l’élastique. Vous devez recouvrir l’élastique de mailles serrées. Il n’y a pas de nombre exact, mais le but est de ne plus voir l’élastique.

2 ème étape : fermer le rond (premier rang)

Une fois que vous avez terminé toutes vos mailles serrées, vous allez devoir faire une maille coulée pour finaliser le rond (premier rang). Pour cela, vous devez simplement piquer dans la première maille serrée, faire un jeté et passer dans les deux boucles.

3ème étape : monter 2 mailles en l’air et faire 2 demi-brides dans la même maille

Après avoir fermé votre rond, vous allez pouvoir passer au deuxième rang. Pour cela, vous devez commencer par monter 2 mailles en l’air.

Puis, toujours dans la même maille (celle de votre maille coulée), vous devez faire 2 demi-brides.

Pour faire une demi-brides, vous devez :

• faire un jeté (photo 1) ;
• piquer dans la maille (photo 2) ;
• faire un jeté (photo 3) ;
• passer le fil dans les trois brins (photo 4).

4ème étape : faire 3 demi-brides dans chaque maille serrée.

Maintenant que vous avez terminé avec votre première maille et que vous avez fait : 2 mailles en l’air et 2 demi-brides dans cette même maille, vous allez pouvoir passer à la suite.

Pour continuer votre deuxième rang, vous devez faire 3 demi-brides dans chaque maille serrée.

Vous allez voir, au fur et à mesure, votre chouchou va onduler.

Une fois que vous avez fait 3 demi-brides dans chacune de vos mailles serrées, vous allez fermer le rang avec une maille coulée. Donc, pour cela, vous piquez dans la première maille, vous faites un jeté, puis vous passez dans les deux brins présents sur votre crochet.

Et là, vous avez le choix :

• si vous trouvez que votre chouchou est trop petit, vous pouvez continuer avec l’étape 5 et refaire un nouveau rang de 3 demi-brides dans chaque maille ;
• et si la taille vous convient, vous pouvez passer directement à l’étape n°6 : le contour.

5ème étape : refaire un rang de 3 demi-brides par maille

Ici, rien de bien compliqué. Vous allez tout simplement répéter l’étape n°4 : monter 2 mailles en l’air et faire 2 demi-brides dans la même maille (pour la première maille), puis faire 3 demi-brides dans chaque maille.

Et à la fin de votre rang, vous le fermer avec une maille coulée.

6ème étape : ajouter une bordure d’une autre couleur

Avant d’ajouter votre deuxième couleur, il va falloir fermer votre projet. Pour cela, vous coupez votre fil (en gardant un peu de longueur) puis vous faites une maille en l’air en tirant tout le fil. Pour être sûr, vous pouvez faire un nœud avec le fil restant.

Vous allez maintenant pouvoir changer de couleur. Pour cela, il existe plusieurs solutions. Pour ma part, j’ai simplement fait un nœud coulant avec la nouvelle couleur sur mon crochet, ensuite, je suis passé dans une maille de mon projet, et j’ai fait une maille coulée.

D’ailleurs, pour cette bordure, vous allez simplement faire 1 maille coulée dans chaque demi-bride du rang précédent.

Une fois que vous êtes arrivés au bout, vous terminez par une maille coulée dans la première maille pour fermer votre rond. Et vous pouvez ensuite fermer votre projet de la même manière que précédemment : en coupant du fil, puis en faisant une maille en l’air et en tirant tout le fil. N’oubliez pas de faire un nœud simple pour sécuriser.

7ème étape : rentrer les fils

Vous allez bientôt pouvoir porter votre super chouchou en crochet ! Mais d’abord, passons à l’étape que je déteste : rentrer les fils.

Pour cela, vous aurez besoin d’une aiguille à laine et de patience.

Il vous suffit d’insérer votre fil dans votre aiguille puis de passer l’aiguille à l’intérieur des mailles. Vous pouvez ensuite faire un dernier nœud simple et couper l’excédent de fil.

Rentrer les fils permet de sécuriser votre projet, normalement, il ne devrait pas se rouvrir.

8ème et dernière étape : porter fièrement son nouveau chouchou au crochet

Vous pouvez maintenant agrémenter vos coiffures et vos looks avec votre nouveau chouchou !
