RUN BABY RUN, NATURE NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME!

in WE ARE MOVING4 years ago

Having published two posts about the entire process of making maple syrup I didn't expect to do another blog on his subject. But, with a run of sap like never seen before, I thought documenting it would be worthwhile.

IMG_7897.JPG

As was mentioned in my earlier blogs, the weather conditions must be just right for the sap to run.
The nighttime temps must fall below freezing and the daytime temperature needs to get at least 10 degrees above freezing.
Well, not only did #Mother #Nature invoke those conditions, she did so with fervor. As was predicted, the temps dropped to 16°F overnight and by noon that day, I felt like we were back in Florida. The high temperature would reach 74°F. The change in temperature was an astounding 58°, and sap was pouring from the taps with a steady stream.

IMG_7910.JPG

We were collecting sap like never before.

IMG_7915.JPG

As @farm-mom brought in gallon after gallon from the field, we needed to utilize every container we had, including the seven-gallon pails we use for brewing beer.

IMG_7913.JPG

With one pail after the next being filled to capacity, storing the sap became a concern.

IMG_7916.JPG

The piles of snow that refused to melt, became invaluable.

IMG_7918.JPG

Nature's icebox would maintain the temps necessary to properly store the sap.

IMG_7919.JPG

By 6:00 PM that evening we had collected a total of 38 gallons of sap. With the forecast for the following day to be pretty much the same, we knew that we were in for a record-setting boil.

IMG_7920.JPG

In 2019 we had our biggest boil ever, 56 gallons. With the conditions being perfect over the next couple of days this record was about to be smashed.

IMG_8345.JPG

The next day was very much the same as the previous day. The sap was running like a river from the taps. Additional containers were at a premium and once again the piles of snow would come into play.

IMG_7927.JPG

By 5:30 PM that day we had collected 70 gallons of sap, 14 gallons more than we had ever collected in the past. This all happened over a two-day period, which in itself was remarkable because collecting enough sap for a boil usually takes a week.

IMG_7924.JPG

Knowing that in order to process that much sap an early start the next day would be paramount. By 8:45 AM the fire was just minutes away from being perfect for the BIG BOIL.

IMG_7938.JPG

With all of the containers of sap moved to the staging area we were ready to get started.

IMG_7939.JPG

Shortly after 9:00 AM, the trays were boiling away as the steam rose from the pans.

IMG_7940.JPG

By 2:30 Pm the last of the liquid had been added to the boiling pans. The aroma of maple syrup had encompassed the entire area as it turned from a clear liquid to a golden color.

IMG_7943.JPG

With everything now under control, we were able to take a break.
Does this hat look familiar @splatts, thanks again, buddy? Shortly you should be receiving something in the mail. I won't tell you what it is, but I'll give you a clue, make sure you've got some pancake batter ready to go!

IMG_7945.JPG

By 6:45 PM, almost 10 hours after putting the pans on the fire, the remaining 4 gallons of sap were removed from the fire pit and placed on the outside burner. Doing this would allow us to be able to control the temperature of the boil with greater precision.

IMG_7954.JPG

It was a very long day of hobbitizing but well worth the effort.

IMG_7966.JPG

It was now very late at night, but MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

IMG_7975.JPG

We had bottled just over 170 ounces of 100% pure maple syrup.

IMG_7980.JPG

The following pics have nothing to do with maple syrup, but everything to do with the #great #outdoors. I thought you may enjoy the following pictures that I took recently while headed home from Syracuse, NY.

IMG_7807 (2).JPG

I think these guys know exactly when hunting season ends.

IMG_7813.JPG

A magnificent animal, resilient, beautiful, athletic, and a prize to those who subsist because of their existence.

IMG_7802.JPG

The underside of their tail hidden when grazing and displayed when they fly through the air with such grace.

IMG_7803.JPG

With the fields no longer blanketed in snow, staying warm and grazing becomes simpler.

IMG_7805.JPG

The young, still buckling at the knees have made it through the harsh winter.

IMG_7812.JPG

With the ability to jump tall buildings in a simple bound they can vanish from view like a mirage.

IMG_7808.JPG

I hope that those who celebrate this special holiday, Easter, can do so with family and friends.

To everyone out there, I hope you'll have a wonderful and safe weekend.

I don't know how I missed this one. You're even clicking that little add to blog button now. I have zero excuses and I feel about this big now and, if that doesn't count, I've completely forgotten everything you wrote about.

Was any of that believable?

I think it's only fair that if even a fraction of that was believable, the farm should consider getting these dayum withdrawal symptoms under control!! Pancakes suck now.

Wanna weigh in in this one @farm-mom? Was any of that believable?

Totally believable, and no excuses are necessary. I miss stuff all of the time, but it is never from a lack of interest or wanting to check up on people whose stuff I enjoy, it's just how it turns out sometimes. This is the first time I have logged into #hive in the last few days because of life and I'm sure there're are many posts I have yet to see. I will surely catch up in the next few days. Your support is always appreciated even if it comes after a few days of me pushing down the publish button.
I have known that there were a few replies that I needed to get back to for the past several days, but responding to them was not possible until now, and I hope that doesn't offend any of them.
I'm headed back to NJ in around ten minutes to bring down some wood. My son has sold $1,200 worth of that spalted maple I milled last year. 😁
I'll check you out later, I would like to know how your latest trip to FL went.

C'mon man, that's total bs and you know it, you were slacking, but it's no harm no foul rule. I haven't been on in days. that's @dandays .My kids and grand kids visit just took it all. My time and love that is. Had such a wonderful week my family. biff!! I am tired now.
So shut up and pay attention will ya?😁😂🤣😍

Dammit! I had a feeling I wouldn't get one passed you.

Must. Try. Harder.

I am not as dumb as I seem. My blond comes from a bottle. My brain come from my dad.
Hey I hope you 2 are well, happy and enjoying life. We just finished a week long love fest.
So blessed. Don't know why, I am a real PIA.

Amazing, boiling in April!

We have a herd of about 14 out back, saw 5 of them last night. And they know exactly when hunting season starts and ends!

As many times as we see them, every time is a thrill.

That's a clever use of the snow from the snowbank.
It looks like you got a nice batch of syrup.
The deer, or high speed beef as we call them here...LOL

High-speed beef for sure.

Hey there @thebigsweed give me a holler in Discord DM, I sent you a friend request there some time back, but you haven't accepted.
@cecicastor asked me to contact you

Good morning @jerrytsuseer, The Discord thing I'm not familiar with and have yet to get involved with it at all.
Let @cecicastor know that she is very welcome and that both @farm-mom and I are praying for her recovery.
If you sent me a friend request I am not aware of it, but would be happy to follow. Just send me the name again if you wouldn't mind.

Good Morning Bob, in Discord, I am Jerrytsuseer#3994

The best thing about it, is the ability to privately and securely message each other.

According to your name there, you and I share three servers: #ocd, #Hive engine and #dna (Densifying Nature Appreciation)

If needed, I'll contrive a way to send you an invitation to Discord.
Thanks

Hey there @thebigsweed, Good Morning!!
What a nice post, love the documentation of our sweet days together, surrounded by the beauty of our environment.
Those deer were awesome to see, geeezz, we must have watched for 1/2 an hour.
Those little fawns were so cute.
My favorite pix though was this one. It looks like a post card.

Hello; @thebigsweed

We appreciate your work and your post was manually shared on Twitter by @papilloncharity from the DNA team!
Reach us on Discord to learn more about the project!

Good morning my friend. Sorry for the very late reply, but things have been very busy around here. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Wow, you were hustling. But the end results, perfect. I imagine even for the amount of work those golden bottles bring a sense of pride and accomplishment. As soon as the exhaustion wears off.

And, the hunters in Wisconsin would be drooling over your pictures. Beautiful creatures.

It was a very long day of hobbitizing, but well worth the effort!

Great news here and maybe you have to start thinking about some automation there my brother. I would say a small factory with a furnace and some mobile stainless steel sap holding bins?

It will take the joy out of the hard manual method, but just a thought here as we are not getting younger 😉

Thank you for the great support to our charity.

I am trying something new here and you are the first to receive this DNA share note.
Any comments on improvements will be appreciated, as it is a home made effort.

Cheers and !BEER

Good morning @papilloncharity. Sorry for such a late reply, but busy, busy, busy has been the way around here for me lately.
After that last batch of syrup, I might take your suggestions into consideration. 😁
Supporting such a wonderful organization is our pleasure, as you continue to make the lives of those in need of assistance, a little brighter.
Everything you do is done with such professionalism and this DNA note you're sending out is no different. I took a look at the link and there are some wonderful blogs already featured on it.
I'm headed to NJ today and will take a better look at some of the posts you included in your DNA share note when I return.
It's humbling for you to send out the first note to me and for you to ask me for my opinion.
Great work my friend,! I'm not sure how you find the time to do all that you do, but when something needs to get done, ask a busy man to do it and it will usually come to fruition.

Good evening to you Sir @thebigsweed,
We share the busy, busy, busy business also over here.
The Easter break gave me time to install a new gas geyser here, as electricity fees have become beyond our means and I also made a new stone pathway in our garden. Now the carport roof awaits my attention and Marian wants a new rock garden for our succulents. Small things and not as fancy as your syrup showpiece, but they all take time and attention.

Here's a picture of the new stone path, as the ground was up to the cement paving skirt, so to prevent us from walking mud into the cottage, I opted for stone.
131.jpg

The link that I wanted you to look at is actually the new website of our charity, The Papillon Foundation, and I use the DNA link only as evidence that I have shared a post to Twitter, which I did with your post.
We have dumped our old website and the new one was done for us by a company that specializes in SEO (Search Engine Optimizing) applications. They are hosting our website for free.

I just wanted to have your thoughts on the design. http://papillonfoundation.com
But we can communicate when you are back from NJ and I hope that your trip is not for something serious.

Blessings.

Zac

The Easter break doesn't sound like much of a break, but it's nice to get personal items checked off of the list. The stone walkway looks great and will surely help with the mud.
Around here we say that there're five seasons, the four standard ones and the muddy season which we are right in the middle of.
Making a rock garden for the succulents should be fun to do.

I took a look at the new website for the Papillon Foundation and the people that put it together did a great job, and they are going to host it for free, that's a winning combination. While taking a good look at the website, the people you serve, the Papillon recipients are so diverse and in such need of a helping hand.
What a feeling of accomplishment you must have, helping so many who may otherwise just continue to feel helpless with no way out of their present situation.
God Bless all of those involved with your charity and ask for nothing in return.

Thank you and yes I like your five season concept, as winter is almost here and as we are in a winter rainfall area, the mud will soon start again.

The rock garden wants a lot of time and I will do it in stages, but will have to finish it before the Spring season arrives. We thus far have about 30 succulents and I will have to get a few more.

Difficulty strikes here from all sides my friend and thankfully we have time to populate thec website with a gallery page and other items of note.
But to get the time to sit with it for a few hours is a bit difficult.
I am just glad that you like the new website and we have high hopes for it.

As an ex teacher you know the feeiling when a student performs very well and it is very much the same with the people that we work with. To see a man that had no hope and had nothing, driving his own car that he proudly comes to show me makes my heart sing.
To me it simply means that he can feed his own family now. Mission accomplished.

God has blessed us with some human angels as allm of their hearts are centered on only one thing.
To be a blessing to all others.

Blessings and !BEER

As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone make gains that will change their life forever.
I worked with many teachers and I wish I could say the same thing.
Some should have retired long ago and I believe the only reason they were still w-- king was for the money.

A principal of mine once told me that a good teacher is like an actor, they need to hold the audiences
attention and being on stage five days a week is not easy.

 4 years ago (edited)

You are so right and it's always only the special teachers that care.
Most of my teachers were abusers and hit me every day. We only discovered many years later that the "Corpus collosum" in my brain does not correspond between the A and B brain.

It also explained my ambidextry and now that I understand it, I can respond with the correct front end of my brain. Confusing though, as the one side is a dreamer and the other side is literal.

Yes, money or the lack of it keeps many in the trade long after their expiry time.

I can believe you and the danger is that the actor role could transform into one's life, but thankfully sanity prevails for some such as you.

Cheers and !BEER

That's weird because I am pretty sure I wrote a comment few days ago about that post. Maybe I just thought I did? I dunno.

Ok, reading a second time and it's even better than the first time around. You ended up with 4 gallons ?
