Iceland is a island country located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Iceland is well known for its natural landscape, glaciers waterfalls and geysers. One of the magnificent natural display that attracts most of the tourists in Iceland is the northern light , Aurora borealis. Another interesting fact about Iceland in between the two tectonic plates i.e Eurasian tectonic plate and the North American tectonic plate. Actually formation of Iceland is because of these plates. Movement of these plates results in escaping of heat from the core of the earth.
Iceland in the 20th century was one of the poorest country in Europe but by using geothermal and hydro power plants, it has become worlds first country to use 100% of it's energy as clean energy.
Main reason behind it is the geographical location of Iceland. Normally when we go down to the earth crust , temperature rises but when we do the same in Iceland,the rise in temperature is 5 times higher than normal. This heat from below the ground is used to generate electricity. But how? The answer is Geothermal energy. Hot water from underground is used to produce electricity. This is achieved by drilling holes at the site to generate electricity. About 25% of Iceland energy consumption is from Geothermal energy. This energy is also used to heating purpose in the houses around Iceland. These natural energy provides addition environment for the people of Iceland to grow vegetable that require high temperature.

This is one of the major geothermal power plant. These power plants bore hole to the underground, suck the hot water to the surface through a tube, use the heat to generate electricity and release the cool water back to the underground.
