I'VE NEVER SEEN A SHEEP WITH A SKULL LIKE THIS BEFORE

in WE ARE MOVING2 years ago

This is the skull of "Jonny Clearwater."

Jonny Clearwater was named after @jonny-clearwater who used to be a fun guy and talented man to interact with around these parts. Not sure whatever became of him, but we actually met up before and took some shots of hot sauce together, along with some other fun activities.

Anyway, the name tribute of this ram is not where his interesting characteristics stop. Jacob's Sheep rams are polycerate, which means that they have multiple sets of horns. Often, these horns grow out away from the skull. This is most desirable, and a good example is shown in the photo below.

This growth of the horns, along with the darker color, is what people look for in Jacob's Sheep rams, especially the breeding stock. Originally, we picked up a rather "sub-par" flock of Jacob's Sheep to get us started. The sire of that flock was Jonny Clearwater. Here's a photo of him out in the pasture.

The main set of horns were growing straight forward and had gotten long enough that he was actually wearing the tips off when he grazed. They were almost preventing him from being able to reach the grass. The minor set of horns were curling back towards his head, almost poking him in the eyes before the curl continued. Until I was able to examine his skull after death, I never realized how crooked his head was when compared to his spine either.

If you check the angle of where his head attached to his spine and compare that to the direction his head is pointing, you'll see what I mean in the photo above. He was a good ram, but those horns were way crazier than they were supposed to be. It's amazing how some things can grow and how strange animals can get. Have you ever seen anything like it? Below are some more photos to show off how unique this skull really was. Enjoy!
