THE GATEWAY FISH … PUFFERS

in WE ARE MOVING4 years ago

While fishing in sunny Florida, it was not long after my bait hit the water that I pulled in my first fish of the day. I grew up with three brothers, who taught me how to fish when I was young. By the age of seven I was baiting my own hook and taking the fish off of the hook.
I have reeled in bass, perch, pickerel, sunfish, catfish, and even Cutthroat Trout out of the Shoshone River in Cody Wyoming.
These are all fresh water fish.

I have only fished in saltwater a few times and never had much luck, but when I landed this strange looking guy I knew what it was.

The pufferfish gave me quite a fight as he tripled in size. It puffs up as a defensive maneuver.
IMG_6615.JPG
Remember I told you that I take the fish I catch off of the hook, but not this one.

It was time for an adult beverage and a little puffing up of our own. 😎

The following day, I landed another pufferfish. @thebigsweed was called into duty, as I was not going anywhere near this prehistoric monster! After my hubby finally got the puffer off of the hook and back in the water, we were not sure it was going to make it. After floating upside down for over a minute, it swam away and we were happy.

With a little investigating, I came across some interesting facts about the pufferfish.
There are lots of different species of pufferfish, many of which are poisonous.
The one I landed is a northern pufferfish, they are not poisonous.

The northern puffer is considered very good eating.
During WWII, the puffer was grown commercially to supplement the soldiers' diet with a good source of proteins. The processed puffer was sent overseas to augment the dwindling supply of beef.

By the way, I used frozen shrimp for bait, with a two hook set up. Now I want to switch over to a spinner to see what else I can attract. I enjoy the reeling in and casting out, a little jigging here and there, it's relaxing .

What a day that was, a #beautifulsunday and a #sublimesunday. Great fun, #amazingnature and a sunset worth soaking in, while I hold hands with my lover.

My grandparents used to take me fishing every summer when I was a kid up near the Ca/Or border. Caught a lot of fish out there on grandpas boat. Still can't tie a good knot or anything.

Puffing of our own. Good stuff @farm-mom.

Did you cook any of them?
It sounds like you really had a wonderful relationship with your grandparents.
As you go through life you taker on new names, sister, brother, wife, lover, mom, dad. uncle, aunt, and so on. I have found, the relatively new name, Grandma to be one of my favorites.

God Bless ,
You are a true survivor of what existing can bring your way.

That sure was nice of you to say. If you expect me to walk away without responding you're outta your grandma mind!

Oh heck yeah we cooked them. Grilled, baked, grandma always canned. I'd be in the canning room with her after me and grandpa cleaned the salmon, canning, canning, canning. My favorite was smoked salmon though. Not anymore, I was a kid back then am a kid and like baked the best now. On the boat before sun up and in before lunch.

True story—they had that boat 17 years. I caught the biggest salmon on the boat, my grandmother had the record—21 pounds. This is in the ocean by boat, not river. One year I brought in a 28n3/4 lb salmon. Won the derby that weekend actually.

My grandfather was so proud. He said "whatever you wanna do with it Arts, it's your fish!" I said "let's smoke it!!" Man.. grandpa was instantly bummed, I saw it in his face like "I shouldn't have said that" cuz smoking the fish is about 5x the price of just filleting the thing.

Man that was a lot of salmon jerky!

I clicked on this post with a mounting sense of panic, hoping it would have a happy ending while my Sunday morning brain was screaming 'POISONOUS!'

I should have known better, and all that panic was quickly forgotten while I enjoyed a nice time fishing at the beach with you, something I haven't been able to find time to do for many years now.

Glad you guys got to enjoy a non toxic variety. The posts from you and Swede have become like comfort food for me 😁

Well, one way or another, I wasn't going to my grave. I'm not sure about the Swede, he's such a gentleman, taking the risk of getting dirt thrown on his face before me. 😁

I'll let you know how they tasted. We actually searched for a recipe for pufferfish, and the @bigsweed said he'll do the dirty work if I cook them.

I've never fished before, not sure if I have the patience, and I'm also very squeamish with non human things that move hence don't like pets 😅

You don't even like dogs??

It's not I don't like them as in I dislike them, it's just that I think it's weird how something that's not human moves. I've heard of touching stories between dogs and owners that melt my heart and sometimes I wish I could love pets.

Fishing does require patience, but but when you are standing in the gulf of Mexico, with the sun shinning and the birds chirping, time blows by. I love it!

It's time to take the next step when fishing saltwater. No matter how ugly or poininious the fish may be, you need to remove the hook.
Both days, with many rods in the water, you were the only one to land a fish.

IMG_6678.JPG
You know what they say.

A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!

Thanks for clarifying the beginning. I only knew the better than a good day at work part.

Truer words have never been spoken. If the GVT keeps giving away out our grandkids money, everyone will be able to go fishing. 🤷‍♀️

Til you call your CPA to arrange an appointment and the very next thing out their mouth after "copy of your drivers license?" is "how much in stimulus payments did you receive in 2020?"

Bastages! I didn't ask for it. I'm not complaining receiving but I never would've accepted it if I knew I had to claim it and the option of refusing stimulus isn't even an option!!!!

Ok, I'm done now for now.

Ah, the Pufferfish is also a problem here, as so may take on the fishermen's carefully prepared bait.
I was also a staunch catch and release fisherman once, but then I got a camera and that was the end of my fishing days.

Here I caught a Carp in a river bay.
Fishing! .jpeg

Blessings and you deserve a !BEER

Hi there, that's some fish, I bet that was fun to reel in. Carps are bottom feeders right? I remember my older brother catching a huge one and wanting to grill it up, but my dad made him put it back. According to my dad, they are NOT a good eating fish.
Have a wonderful day!

Thank you and yes it was a great experience on the line.
Common carp is a typical peaceful omnivorous fish which consumes a range of different natural foods, including planktonic crustaceans, insects (including their larvae and pupae), the tender parts and seeds of water plants, and also fish eggs and larvae, as well as smaller fish
Have a look at this: https://bonfirebob.com/what-do-carp-eat/

All of the locals eat carp here and whenever I arrived at my special spot one or two guys would appear to wait for the damaged fish that I don't release back into the waters.
I once caught a big carp with no eyes in his head, only two empty eye sockets.
I have the photo somewhere in my files.

Blessings and !WINE

I've done a lot of fishing, but always in Northern waters. Walleye, bluegills that sort of thing. I've never done any salt water fishing, partly because I have always been afraid that I would pull out something that looked like that! I would not have had a clue what to do with it or even if it was safe to touch it to take it off the hook! I will be looking forward to hearing if you catch more and how they taste!

I would love to fish in the Northern Pacific , walleye, sounds good to me.
The pufferfish is so ugly, I won't touch them. Thank goodness for my hubby.

When my boys were little we had gone out walleye fishing and on the way back in we got stopped by a Canadian wildlife officer and I got a fine for having two walleyes over the limit in the live well. He was not about to be sympathetic about the fact that we had simply miscounted. They were expensive fish, but oh so good!

I am about to purchase my first fishing pole, the dream is to go with the kids 😁 Our neighbours are all hunters, but not one single fisherman.

I always has been lucky catching fish, and of course cook them afterwards

Your kids will love fishing with dad, I hope your luck holds. Fishing takes a lot of patience , so let's hope you can land a few.
Thanks for dropping by. Give that new pole a good work out.

It's a pleasure!

Give that new pole a good work out

You mean, like a pole dancer? 😄

Did you eventually catch something else (apart from the puffer fish from the other day)

Umm? Nope. Been fishing 3 more times, had one silver fish semi hooked but lost him.
Maybe I should consider doing a little dancing before I cast out.
Could change the mojo😊
