The Beautiful Purple Heather on the Moors

Heather in the Peak District in Derbyshire looks stunning this time of year. From mid July onwards, the heathers start to bloom, and by August, the entire Peak District is covered in a sea of pinky purple colours.

Not only is heather lovely to look at it also plays a role in the ecosystem of the Peak District. Heather provides food and shelter for a variety of wildlife, such as birds, creepy crawlies, and small mammals.

As well as all that, it also helps to protect the soil preventing erosion. Nature is very clever.

There are numerous trails and footpaths to explore. It doesn't have to be during the day either. As the sun goes down, the pinky purple colour of the heather glows in the distance.

The open topped tour bus went past that takes sight seers around some of the areas most popular destinations.

There were lots of bilberry bushes as well, but not much of the fruit has come through yet. Maybe in a week or two, there will be people out picking them to make pies and jam with. We are very lucky to have this on our doorstep.
