Broken Systems: Addressing Theft and Neglect in Schools

Yesterday marked our resumption at work after the long break. It was quite exhausting, and I couldn’t even find time to post on Hive. By the time I got home, I felt completely drained, with body aches from the day’s stress. The first thing I did was take a bath to ease the discomfort.

Since we had been away from work for almost three weeks, the entire school premises were in a terrible state. Dirt and cobwebs were everywhere, making the environment look completely neglected. As soon as I arrived at the school, I gathered a few students who had resumed early to help clean the surroundings. We worked on the classrooms and the school compound, ensuring they were spotless. However, the task turned out to be more challenging than expected because the number of students present was quite small. A job that should have been completed in a few hours ended up taking the entire day, leaving everyone worn out by the time school closed.

On top of the stress of cleaning, we were faced with another disheartening discovery. The cables that supplied electricity to all the classrooms and offices had been stolen. It was frustrating to see the school in such a state of vandalism. The situation was even worse because the community itself has no power supply, and we solely relied on the solar system provided by the government for electricity. Now, with the cables gone, there is no way to power the school, which will undoubtedly make our work more difficult and uncomfortable in the coming days.

The issue of theft in the school has become a recurring problem, and it’s deeply troubling. It is hard to understand how petty thieves think stealing school property is justifiable. These criminals destroy public facilities for personal gain, leaving others to suffer the consequences. How can one stoop so low as to depend on stealing cables to make a living? Even if they manage to sell the stolen items, is that the kind of income they want to sustain their families? Such actions only reflect a lack of moral values and integrity.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In the past, there was a similar incident where cables were stolen, and the culprits were eventually caught. Shockingly, one of them turned out to be an ex-student of the school. It was heartbreaking to see a teenager involved in such a crime. A student who should still be under the guidance and supervision of their parents had chosen the wrong path. One can’t help but wonder where they picked up such behavior and why their upbringing failed to instill better values.

Apart from the cleaning and the theft issue, there was a lot of administrative work to be done as well. With the new term starting, we had to sort out and update various documents and records. These tasks are critical to ensuring that the school runs smoothly, but the events of the day made everything feel overwhelming.

In moments like these, I can’t help but reflect on the state of society. It’s disheartening to see evil and selfishness prevail, especially when it affects places like schools that should be safe and productive environments. I hope that those responsible for these crimes will realize the harm they are causing and find better ways to make a living. Until then, we can only keep moving forward, doing our best to maintain the school and provide a conducive learning environment for the students.
