We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 33: What age were you when?
While out with Smallsteps today, we were talking about trying new things and being brave and all of that kind of stuff, and it got me thinking about my own firsts in life and also, what age is it "acceptable" to do things. For example, I find it pretty strange that the drinking and smoking age in the US is 21, an 18 year old can vote and fight and die in the military. But that is too heavy for this WTF.
Let's have some fun tonight
I am going to list a few topics and you can add your own ages into the list or comment on what is an acceptable age for these things, if you haven't done them yet. You can copy-paste the numbered list and add your own of interest too!
Note: If you have good ones, I will answer those as a reply.
I was ____ when I first:
- Getting drunk
- First real kiss
- First girl/boyfriend
- Firs smoked
- Getting a smartphone
- Getting a job
- Getting ears pierced
- Losing virginity
- Moving from home
- Getting married
My answers:
Getting drunk
- First drink was when I was 12 and would drink occasionally, but first time drunk was when I was 16. I drank a lot that night.
First real kiss
- I was 13 and it was at an underage disco. She was 14 and gorgeous.
First girl/boyfriend
- I was 14 and at high school. She was cute and we were together for all of two or three months.
First smoked
- Same as when I first drank alcohol. I was 12. I didn't like smoking, however I started smoking at 20 because it helped my stomach condition. Ended up being addicted, but quit about 15 years ago.
Getting a smartphone
- Well, since I am old, I got mine when they first came out. However, I don't think most kids should need one until 12, unless there is a purpose for it. And even then, there should be parental control.
Getting a job
- I was 12 working cash in hand, but just under 16 for my first legal job. I think kids should work as soon as legal, even if only a couple hours a week.
Getting ears pierced
- I was 12, though I don't have a piercing now. I think the age doesn't really matter for this, but a lot of my friends have strong opinions on it.
Losing virginity
- I was 16 and I was with the girl for about a year and a half through to the end of high school.
Moving from home
- I was 18 and again, I think that kids should move out of the home when possible, so they can explore the world and have more responsibility for themselves.
Getting married
- I was 36, but I would have loved to have got married much earlier and had kids much earlier too. I would have been happy to get married at around 25 and have kids soon after.

First real Kiss: 18, but I don't remember the girl's name
First girlfriend: 19 at Collegue
First smartphone: 20, then it was stolen( love that one)
Getting a job: 24, just after graduated. Unfortunaly I was an introvert boy.
Getting ears pierced: 16, both ears, my older sister help me. It was a surprise to my family, but not a storm

Moving Home: I'm still living i'm the same place
Getting married: 27 years old. Still married and fallen in love
Really? :D Though it doesn't surprise me. I don't really remember my first time having sex, though I know how old I was and who it was with :)
So married and living at home. Is it common there?
Yes, it is common in Cuba, but hey, soon Me and My wife Will be in other place, looking for our future
Reading yours, I find myself nowhere near...🫣 I think, I am one of those homely guys who get everything after attaining 18 years and few things post marriage.....just like an obedient son of my parent...I am not a smoker or drinker. I like bear during summer and first one was at sge of 22. But hv tasted / experinced everything ....I never get ear pierced and would never do that.....I never had gf, even though I had many offer but I avoided them.
Now I m wondering if i am normal guy or not ? Or pretty orthodox in my life approach..☹️
Dhan has organized some days which are taking us back to the past. Although I am not a heavy drinker or a smoker. But I completed my studies when I got a project based job then I got married for the first time and my first kiss was only after marriage.Although I got married when I was close to 30 years old. Because I was finishing my studies, I was close to 30 years old because of the session jam. Here too, you can vote at the age of 18, but it takes at least 21 years to get married, which is sad. However, it seems that here it takes 30 years to complete your studies and get a job, so many boys who study get married after 30 years.
I started drinking before 18, but now that I think about it, I'm not convinced that was the right time for it.
I first smoked at 14; 80% of the boys in our school smoked(I quit smoking 15 years ago). I got drunk for the first time at 14, decided to show off to my friends, and downed a bottle of vodka in one gulp (I almost died).
I've been earning money since I was 14, but it was always self-employed and I never started working for someone else.
I bought my first smartphone in 2004, and back then, many people didn't realize I had access to the internet, books, music, and videos. On the train, people asked me, "Why are you staring at your phone for so long?". I'm sure they all understood why later :)
Some of the firsts on the list I've never done, but the ones I had, like getting my first real job, though an online one, was satisfying. It meant I could support my family and loved ones financially and I had officially become a man. None of the ones that one the list gave me that much joy.
I'm going to decline this one only because it will point out just how pathetic my life was up to a certain point! :)
