Kill Your Darlings

in Reflectionslast year

Like it or not, no matter how productive or efficient you think you are, there is no way you can ever complete everything you might want to complete, because there just isn't enough "time" in the day, the month, a life. It isn't about prioritizing what is important for us, it isn't about making more time, because that is impossible - all we can do is recognize that it is a losing game, so we have to decide on what are the most important things and with everything else we want...

Kill our darlings.

In writing, the idea of "murdering darlings" is to eliminate anything that doesn't add value to the story, whether it be extra words or sub-plots - even if the ideas themselves are great, we should be ruthless. So, perhaps we should be a little more heartless when it comes to the bits of our life that don't add to our own story.

One piece of advice I have heard at some time, was listing the top 20 or so most important things of our lives and then organizing them into a hierarchy. And then, cutting everything that doesn't make the top five. The reason is that those are the things that would distract us and draw our attention from putting effort into the five things we most want to spend our time on, essentially diluting our ability as we are spread too thin.

I have not yet contemplated what my top five would be.

But, since I believe that the most valuable thing in a lifetime is our relationships, at least one or two of them would have to be centered around building, developing and maintaining the important relationships in my life. Just like money, relationships can't be taken with us when we die and we can't pass them down to others through inheritance. They are momentary, contextual and tied to a single life - the epitome of personal. Any connection to others is an independent relationship that may form, but it will never be the same. Relationships are non-fungible. We earn them, we can trade on them, but we can't swap them.

But, the bigger question is considering what are the handful of things that we are going to focus our time and energy on throughout our lives, with our average eighty or so years. Perhaps in the past it was easier where there weren't as many options as there are today, or perhaps that is because we were content to live an average, to limit our range and be satisfied with the family, house, car and a holiday. Maybe now with not only the explosion of opportunity, but also the constant barrage of advertising in its many forms, we need to develop new strategies how to come to terms with the conflict of infinite choice, and finite resources.

No matter what we do, we are always living in scarcity. An "abundance mindset" doesn't factor in time and infinite choices, so like it or not, we are going to have to come to terms with limitation - even if we had all the money in the world. We can't be in two places at once. we can't put all of our attention on two points of focus. We can't have our cake, and eat it too.

We need to kill.

Maybe what a lot of us end up doing is trying a bit of everything, so that way at least we get to experience more range. But, does this lead to a better quality of experience or does it make us more aware of what we are missing and that we are constantly failing to put in as much effort as we would like? Would it be better to murder the majority of our targets of desire and pour more of ourselves into fewer activities?

There are many challenges in whittling down the list to the top five, because most likely there are interdependencies that we would have to consider, where for example one want requires resources that come through an unwanted activity. Pretty much, anything that takes money to provide the opportunity, requires getting that money somehow, with working being the most common form - something most people try to avoid.

Can we only do what we want in this life?

I don't think so. At least in the sense that we commonly see doing what we want. Of course, we could reduce our wants to the base form, but I believe that even then, we will still have too many wants to fit into a day, so even when we are doing what we want, we will still be faced with the current condition of not doing what we want also. The only way that we might be able to do this is to be in a state of unconscious flow all of the time, something that I don't think is possible. We are conscious beings, so we are going to evaluate our world and make comparisons, as we have no choice.

Maybe this is why so many turn to drugs.

Maybe with drugs we are able to "forget" all we are missing. Perhaps this is the attraction of entertainment activities too. It gives us reprieve from the reality of our world, one where we are always falling short, always facing scarcity of some kind to not get exactly what we want. And, even when we get what e want, we immediately recognize that we have more wants, so the cycle starts again.

No matter what we attempt to do in this life, the list is always going to be longer than our life itself. This means that we can never complete our wants and we will always have to leave opportunities on shelves and our journey incomplete. It is a journey that ends with death, but we can never reach the destination we want, because what we want doesn't fit into that lifetime.

Unless we want for nothing.

But is that living?

Actually I use the 80/20 Pareto principle, where 20% of my projects bring 80% of the profits. So, when need arise, I just stop doing the rest of 80%, starting again with some that I like, even if they are not profitable, when I got extra time.

What happens if you focus? Perhaps the needs change too?

It is more about time management than focus. With a full time job and crypto related stuff, and keeping the human connections alive (visiting nephews and nieces), not much time is left. Add the daily walk and a trip to cinema/pub a week, and we are quite limited (by time).

Maybe people try so many different things in a way of trying to find what they are good at. I hear we are all meant to have skills others don't and yet to find what that might be. A jack of all trades, but a master of none springs to mind. There is never enough time the busier and more involved you become in every day life.

I hear we are all meant to have skills others don't and yet to find what that might be.

It is impossible at global scale, isn't it? 8 billion people and I am meant to find one thing that I can compete with? Then, it also has to be something that AI can't do...

Lol. We know you are good at writing and have been able to analyze things well so you already have some pointers. I think some are obvious especially to those that know you.

As painful as it can be sometimes I almost think I would rather deal with the realities of the world. Sure, escape is great sometimes, but as I get older I realize that time is so fleeting. I want to savor every moment. The good and the bad. If I am avoiding that, then I am wasting the time I have.

Savoring the moment is great for sure. I wonder if it is possible when we are spending our time on things that we don't actually care that much about. Would it be better to drop some of the list and then focus?

I think there are definitely things that we can let slip away. There are others though that are necessary. Whether we like them or not. Being able to still live in the moment even when you aren't enjoying yourself would be an important skill to have.

Maybe what a lot of us end up doing is trying a bit of everything, so that way at least we get to experience more range. But, does this lead to a better quality of experience or does it make us more aware of what we are missing and that we are constantly failing to put in as much effort as we would like?

Never a fan of loading myself to too many things. Although I love to experience a multitude of things but I also recognizes the fact that there are only so little time that I have on my plate that they could not be stretched any further than they already are. I love to place more emphasize on what I deem are more important (the top 5 like you mentioned) and making sure that I do it well 😊

and making sure that I do it well

The saying is, "if it is a job worth doing, it is a job worth doing well" -but if we are spread too thin, are we doing anything well? It is like multitasking - it isn't effective.

Amen to that! Hate it when people say I can't multitask (though that is true to a certain extent), but that is only because I actively choose not to pick up that "skill" as it feels like the quality of any output would drop since my mind / thoughts would be all over the place 😅

Maybe with drugs we are able to "forget" all we are missing.

drugs helped House to forget that he is missing a part of his leg so it probably works really well. Still it is not something I am willing to test myself.

Maybe the pain would have been a better teacher ;)

Truly, we can dream of anything, but we cannot have everything.😔 So many things the world can offer, but at such limited time.

We waste so much time when we are young - would be nice if I could steal some of it back!

Life now is full of distractions and whether we admit it or not, these distractions have been brought out by our “wants”. Before the smartphone era kids play games outside all day long. Now everyone is glued to the screens of their Ipads. There are still means to play outside but less and less seems to be doing it as they Want to spend more time with their gadgets.

The "gadget life" is going to come back to haunt most of us I believe. People will look up and realize they are incredibly lonely.

Ive got the same thoughts. Admitedly there would be times when i dont do anything at all but just stay glued in front of a screen.

The abundance mindset is a great tool to attract things in our life and remembering that there is a share of everything for everybody (potentially).
Still, we ending up focusing on meaningless things running for stuffs that are mere matter and often have no relevance for our growth and self-development

Abundance is only useful in groups, right? What is the point of having all of something, if no one has anything else. It is like me having lots of holidays to spare, but no point in taking them, since my family don't have holidays to spare.

I love this perspective. Did not think of it!
Like the Metcalfe law, the more people having it, the more power obtaining the item (like telephone).

You just can't have it all, not all at once at least...

But is that living?

Maybe for a monk? Yet, they do "want" and prefer a proper bit of peace and quiet. 😂

This is the thing - everyone wants something. Take it away from them, how do they act?

Take it away from them, how do they act?

Alive, but dead inside...

Wants become pressure points to dictate our behavior.

That is a common issue nowadays. Everyone has a damn big list of wants, usually a never-ending one.

Many simple things bring me pleasure. So I'll keep them all.

But, there are always more simple things :)

Shouldn't we already eleminate the unnecessary things in our life? I have been trying this in whole my life, but there is some that still exists :)

There is the unnecessary and then there is also the wanted. In essence, "nothing is necessary", but that doesn't stop us trying to make our lives important :)

Good read, thanks for sharing

Have you read it?
I have heard good things about it.

Yes, I found it very good: JOMO (the joy of missing out) and all.

"Por qué querer matar a lo que amamos" es una pregunta compleja y subjetiva. A veces, podemos sentir la necesidad de alejarnos de algo o alguien que amamos para protegernos a nosotros mismos oa la otra persona. Otras veces, puede ser una forma de lidiar con el dolor o la pérdida. En cualquier caso, es importante explorar nuestras emociones y buscar ayuda si es necesario.

Humm, you are somehow correct about this blog, but what I know is that our wants in life can not finish till we die. We can not do only what we want in life because other things you don't plan for or want might come your way and there is nothing you can do about it.
It is not because of trying to fulfill what we want that some people damble into drugs, it is just because some are addicted to it already and they can't control it.

Whether you like it or not, no matter how productive or efficient you think you are, there is no way you can complete everything you want to complete.

A truth I've learned the hard way

It is true that in life everything is limited whether you like it or not, I think the most important thing is what you want in this life and to keep it at all costs.

I for one will live believing what is right FOR ME and not what a religion says or the neighbor who smells like pee or what people say is right in society.
That would be life

LEO Power Up Day - September 15, 2023

That "killing your darlings" line is a classic and fits many bills 😉

If we have everything, and want for nothing what would life look like in say ten years? Would we still be happy, or incredibly bored?

No matter what we do, we are always living in scarcity.

I think it's not just scarcity but also a form of insecurity to survive every scenario. And that is kind of like hardwired into our brain. More complicated you have goal, the more complicated struggle becomes and each of that gets cascaded and then scarcity to meet certain scenarios and their rough edge kind of brings suffering. Being in the right place at the right time matters.

This is an interesting way to look at how to live your life. Focus on what's important. Unfortunately it isn't always that simple. They always have something connected to it. Focusing on family is good, but with it comes the food, bills, school, vacation, etc. What ends up happening is that time and money become a common factor. But to get money, you need to work, but work takes up a lot of time. Most of the time, the money earned from work is barely enough, so the important things get pushed back more and more.

For the regular person without tons of money, work/money ends up being the most important one. It is a sad reality, but something everyone faces.

Interesting write up. Learnt alot

It is just sad that we cannot have everything and I guess that is a way of always going back to God because if man has all things, they may not pray again
