RE: Sick as a Dog

in Reflections3 days ago (edited)

I was sick as a dog over the past few days, and didn't get coddled. I also got the sad news that one of my friends' cats was diagnosed with kitty cancer. No chance of recovery there, alas, but I am on the mend.

I resisted the urge to drag myself to a convenience store for celebratory alcohol on New Year's. I don't drink a lot, and often go for weeks at a time without a drop, but not for any particular religious or cultural traditions. Neither "Tipaton Tammikuu" nor Sober October nor even Lent affects my choices. I'm a rebel, in moderation.

Winter activity is a chore. The cold does not play nice with chronic illness, but we finally have enough snow to perhaps make it worth digging out my snowshoes again. I also have YakTrax slip-on traction devices for my boots. Going to a gym isn't really an option, but some of that new snow will need shoveling anyway.

See! It is shameful. Coddling should be mandatory. Or is it MANdatory.

It is always sad when pets die I think. People tend to get more attached to them than they do to humans.

A rare breed today.

I know the feeling. We will have 20-40cm today (6-12 inches or so). Guess I better get out there and swing that shovel.

I do have a kernel of good news. While visiting those friends, they got a call from their veterinarian. Orange kitty's blood work didn't signal major issues with his blood cell count, and they think they got the cancer when they cleaned out the bad tissue in his abscess. Either way, my lap got occupied by a happy cat whose purr works fine, and at least doesn't have an open festering wound in his side anymore.
