RE: Somewhere Between Arrival and Leaving: A Year of Young Journalism

in Reflections26 days ago

Happy to see you speaking in front of young journalists and sharing your expertise. In our school, I was also in charge of our organization's social media publication. I remember that I didn't apply for the position, but they still recruited me anyway. Maybe they believe in the value that I can bring to the organization. Keep writing to inspire more young journalists, @whosee!

Oh, a young journalist in the making also here. How's your journalism journey so far @iamboring ?

I already ended my role in the mentioned organization since they started recruiting me way back in academic year 2024–2025. Anyway, I’m glad that I provided value to the school organization as part of my responsibilities.

Actually, during the first quarter of the year, I was hired as a sports writer in the local sports niche for a start-up media company. I covered PBA, UAAP, NCAA, PVL, and other sport-related articles. After I successfully secured the position, I was confident that I did my job well. In fact, our editor-in-chief back then told me that I was one of the writers who didn’t need to be micromanaged. However, it didn’t end well when the company owner didn’t give me my one-month salary and he also didn’t follow our agreements. Until now, he still owes ₱17,500 for the services I rendered.

I’m not into journalism at the moment, but I’m currently trying various writing forms that pay. As of now, I’m trying something that I know will enhance my writing skills but will also pay me. I can’t tell it yet since I’m afraid of jinxing it. Writing has been my bread and butter since I learned how to write non-fiction five years ago, though.
