I needed to share this on Hive and write a little something about it.
It is a bit of a MIND-TRAP that we put ourselves in.
Was I productive? No.
Did I rest? Also no.
Was I gentle with myself about it? Also no!
And this is a bit of hillarious introspection for me becuase usually if you applied these three question to your spouse, loved one, parent, child... then it would probably yield very different answers.
You probably would not get three "no" answers!
Was my loved one Productive? Yes, they did something. They did a chore, they went to work, they did an activity, etc.
We can easily accept that the things our loved ones do hold value and are considered productive.
If our loved one was not productive, no? But did they rest? It is essential that my loved one gets rest and takes breaks. They do not need to be productive 100% of the time.
Our spouse, our children, our parents... we want to see them rest! They should have a balance in their lives and there is time to work and time to play!
If neither of these were true with your spouse, they were not productive and they did not rest then you would feel concern. If your loved one was not gentle on themselves because of being stuck between these two opposites, then you would be the one to go to your spouse and BE the one who is gentle to them!
However, we do not often do the same for ourselves. Instead of being gentle with ourselves, we are harsh. Are we trying to motivate ourselves into doing something? I hope so... but usually, we do not in any case make ourselves more productive.
Instead, we sit somewhere, petrified and tired, being neither productive nor relaxed and wasting time.
My opinion: You cannot force relaxation and thus the best thing to do with your time when you cannot figure out which of the two to do is to DO something!
Usually, the reason a person cannot do anything productive is their lack of deciding on something to do that IS productive. But a lot of somethings are productive... so DO one of them already!
Instead of deliberating on what it is that you need to do, just do something. Clean a toilet. Rearrange that cupboard. Fix that hinge. Sweep the floor.
Soon enough, something is done. Then multiple things are done. Then you might discover something productive to do that is interesting to do.
In either case, once you are done doing these many things, you will eventually be tired of all the things that you needed to do. This means that you will be tired enough to relax and rest and you cannot berate yourself internally for being unproductive because you did do something after all!
Well, those are my two cents on the matter... I'm off to go DO another thing.
Cheers!
