Settling Into Swedish Life – The Challenges and Joys

in Ecency9 months ago

Moving to Sweden has been both an adventure and a test of patience. There’s something deeply humbling about starting from scratch—learning a new system, figuring out how things work, and accepting that you will make mistakes along the way.

One of the first challenges we faced was the bureaucracy. Coming from Germany, I thought I was prepared for paperwork, but Sweden has its own way of doing things. Without a personnummer (the Swedish personal number), life is… complicated. You need it for almost everything—opening a bank account, registering for healthcare, even getting a phone contract. While we’re still navigating this, I’ve learned to embrace the lagom mindset—finding balance and accepting that things take time.

But despite these hurdles, there are so many moments of pure joy. Waking up to untouched snow, hearing nothing but the wind in the trees, watching my children run freely without the constant pressure of schedules and expectations. Life here feels real, unfiltered, raw in the best way possible.

What I’ve Learned So Far

1️⃣ Patience is key – Things move at their own pace, and fighting against it only creates stress. Sweden has taught me to slow down and trust the process.

2️⃣ Nature is a healer – There’s something profoundly grounding about being surrounded by forests and lakes. The quiet has given me space to think, to breathe, to be.

3️⃣ Less really is more – We left so much behind when we moved, and yet, I don’t miss most of it. Simplicity brings freedom.

4️⃣ People are kind but reserved – Swedes are friendly but not overly social at first. It takes time to build relationships, but when you do, they are genuine and deep.

5️⃣ Embracing discomfort leads to growth – Whether it’s the cold, the language barrier, or the uncertainty, every challenge is a chance to grow.

Looking Ahead

I still don’t know exactly where this journey will lead. But what I do know is this: I made the right decision. Every day, I feel more connected to myself, to my family, and to the kind of life I want to live. Sweden isn’t just a new home—it’s a new way of being.

If you’ve ever dreamed of making a big life change, I encourage you to listen to that voice inside. It won’t always be easy, but sometimes, the hardest steps lead to the most incredible destinations.

bureaucracy (by design) is the hardest part to deal with.
it is the opposite of the simplicity we all look for in a life closer to nature.
it is like trying to mix water and oil.
you have made good observations I can totally relate to, seeing my personal journey, now in retrospective. I was making those first steps nearly 8 years ago.
and yes patience is key. here in Portugal you might need a whole set of keys 😆
judging by your photo, the crude beauty of nature does hold the promise of healing.
good luck 🙏

Yes! It is like you write in your comment. Nature is pure healing and living close to nature is the best experience so far.
