Project of the Week: Architecture studio @BIG_Builds, led by @BjarkeIngels, has partnered with Japanese hospitality brand Not A Hotel to design three villas on Japan’s Sagishima Island. Called Not A Hotel Setouchi, the villas combine Japanese and Scandinavian design influences, drawing inspiration from their shared emphasis on minimalism and natural materials.
Located on the southwestern cape of the island, the single-story, circular villas feature wood ceilings, slate floors, and panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows that offer ocean views. Curved clay walls and foundations integrate simply with the natural terrain, enhancing their organic aesthetic.\n\nThe design reflects the natural landscape and the elegance of traditional Japanese architecture while embracing Scandinavian simplicity.
