I am a believer in lucky charms. When I was younger I was very superstitious and believed in old wives' tales. Some of these tales would be to not walk under a ladder or break a mirror.
I did not know why I believed in these superstitions but I liked to hedge on the side of caution and try to not bring any bad luck into my life. Later I also got some lucky charms or items that I would need to use or it could have bad consequences.
The first lucky charm I had was a crappy old calculator that I was using throughout my exams. It's quite an old style and not so easy to use some of the functions, but I couldn't go to my exams without my lucky calculator. If I changed my calculator, I would worry I wouldn't be able to complete the exam.
The calculator actually worked its magic too, all the exams I went to with it, I managed to pass them all and didn't need to do any repeats! Ironically this calculator I just borrowed but I couldn't buy my own in case changing would break my passing streak.
The second lucky charm I have is my lucky tie. I have had this tie for years but it is always the one I have worn when I have tried to get a new job or advance my career.
This has proven true because as I have gone to some interviews more casually lately, I didn't get the job and it is obviously because of not wearing my lucky tie.
My third lucky charm is long gone now but it was a pair of boxer shorts. Before going out on a date I would need to wear my lucky boxer shorts. Without the lucky boxer shorts, my evening would most likely crash and burn.
These boxer shorts have given out so much luck that they fell apart and I could no longer wear them. I was reluctant to throw them out but I did. 😥 I really miss them and although I bought some new ones in the same size, brand, and color, they weren't the same and didn't give me the same luck.

My perspective on 'luck' changed when a particular equation was presented to me:
Luck = opportunity + preparedness
Chance would fall under the opportunity category, but effort is on the side of preparedness. Winning the lottery (opportunity) is useless if you are not prepared to cash it in (preparedness)!
I would agree with you 100% there and that is a great way to look at it. Another thing I would say, if there is something that you really want, you should try to GIVE it as much as possible.

I used to believe and rely on LUCK when I was much younger. There was even a time where I wear a necklace with a small pouch containing a part of a thunderstone. Someone told us that it would bring good luck.
As of now, I do believe far more in probability rather than in luck. 🙂

Hahahahaha that calculator could really be the lucky charm! I heard a lot of the same stories as yours. Some are even borrowing calculators from the people who passed the exam so they can too!
It's interesting, what's your course if you don't mind me asking? I mean I'm taking engineering and the calculator is part of my life😂
